Overal Review:
The story focus used on a girl named Scarlette who moves to a new home with her father and sister. Throughout the journey with our protagonist we are constantly made aware of nightmares haunting Scarlette, which would eventually be revealed to be more than just that. The story makes jumps between time lines of the modern era, and an era of the 18' hundreds which also provide a percpective of Elizabeth, another main character of a wealthy/noble family suffering from relationship issues. It is made clear that both timelines have links and connections with one another in terms of what the plot will offer later on.
Positives/What I liked
To start, I have only read five chapters of the book which is used to compile the review. A disclaimer that although I am aware the main plot has not started yet, or that the inciting incident had not been established from what I read so far, this does not hinder the fact that your book was a pretty well written, intriguing and living work on excellence.
- Firstly, your tone and setting is well executed, or to put it short, your descriptions are really good. The section of your book which really exploits this is quite literally the first chapter. The first chapter of any book should always be written well in order to really grab the attention and the trust of your reader. For a wattpad book, I must say when I read your book for the first time; I was almost contemplating whether I would be viable to even review the book in the first place honestly.
- The way you describe the body language and reactions of your characters brings them to life and visually allows me to flesh them out in my mind. Not only that, but you also manage to interegate the environment to convey emotion and tone pretty well, such as when Elizabeth slams a fist on her office desk in rage for example in terms of emotional conveyance alone without the environment, could be when Elizabeth is confronting her spy about the bad news (spoilers), "... My little Spy said, trying to regain my attention. He bore a look of sympathy, and just like a flick of flame lit upon a candle, my pain turned to anger. "
- There is great distinction between the modern era and the noble era, and you have done well to make both time lines as unique by themselves as possible. The perspectives can easily be determined by noticing how Elizabeth had such a poetic and formal tone in her descriptions, compared to Scarlette's section where it comes as more informal and simply put, more modern. The detail is still there in both timelines, but subtle moments like swearing from the cast in Scarlette's story, to the polite greeting in Elizabeths story much more since it posses more emotional description, by which emotional aspects of a story is what I love most. Her rage and anger as well as her heartbreak are heavily conveyed and places me well in the shoes of the character.
- Characterisation is peaked mostly in Scarlettes story, which provides us with a variety of different characters giving life into the world we are reading.
The gritty and cold relationship between Scarlette and her sister Sunni is funny and very relatable for me, (and could be for many readers) allowing the reader to see the cast as real people. Darius is an interesting character with family issues, and abuse, which is an interesting emotional catalyst driving a very sensitive yet pretty realistic scenario for a character.
Basically the characters are not bland; each character can be relatable one way or the other.
- In terms of plot, starting the story with Elizabeths story was a good choice, because once you start diving into Scarlettes perspective, in my opinion, there is a sense of intrigue and mystery pulling the reader to continue reading, expecting for these mysteries to reveal itself.
I know there is a connection, maybe even symbolic between timelines. It creates many questions needing answers and that's a good hook for any story.
Honestly I am aware that I have not Read far enough to add much for the plot, but this is all I could compile nonetheless, as well as including the blurb/ summary of your book into the mix.
Constructive Critism:
There are no major problems I have with this book which I could make out other than spelling errors and some dialogue spacing (two characters speaking in one paragraph or the same characters dialogue split when not needed)
To go to detail, or give an example, in chapter 4, Darius Says, "Sorry Scar," he mumbled."you know how much I love to rile you up" He said.
After this Darius continues to say another dialogue, but fir some reason this was separated from the rest of his dialogue previously. If something happens in between like a scene or such, then this is fine but the problem is there was no scene. Only seperare dialogue with spaces when there is a scene which will occur or when a new character speaks.
A quick reread through the book should get you fixing those spellings and such errors in no time, as well as considering the large point I made above about dialogue, because this is not the only instance.
Personal Rating:
I'll give this book a 9/10, because like the tiny problems I mentioned in my brief criticism, this book will be a perfect 10/10 once you fix the problems,
Overal Thoughts:
I am not a proffesional Reviewer, and my statement of your book being perfect might be questioned by maybe other people who come to read your book, you never know.
Just know that I read this book like any reader would, and I read it again and again with the intent to spot out all great details, or any mistakes or problems. Whether it's to support a point of excellence, or to justify an issue, in my view, your book deserves more credit, deserves more reads and is definitely a hidden gem filled with hard work. Keep it up.
