Overal review:
The book “Look for the Light” thematizes dysautonomia. Joy, at the age of 16, gets diagnosed with this fatal condition, and learns that she will die sometime around her graduation. A high school student and a musical dancer, Joy is full of life before the diagnosis. She has many friends and is known by many people for her great dance performances.
Positives/What I liked:
- The intro got me hooked IMMEDIATELY. It is so well written and the topic is interesting. You portray it well too
- I LOVE the rebellious nature of Joy. It is very teenage-like, but also it is just cool.
- I have read until the end of the third chapter and I am invested into this book. I care about not only the main character, but also her friends.
- You have given room for interesting and deep side characters. I want to learn more about them
- It is not too cliche. There are a few stories about young women with fatal diseases out there, but in my opinion, not enough. The topic is so deep and so important.
Constructive Critism:
- Not much to criticize. The end of chapter 3 confused me because there were too many names. She sits down between two characters that were not previously mentioned. There could be more of an introduction to the choir. You could also describe the voices of Altos, Baritones. That way the scene’s atmosphere could be more fleshed out.
- The appearance of the protagonists should be somewhat described. They could have unique features to make them more memorable. I was really struggling to remember everyone
Overal Thoughts:
The idea and the execution are great. Please finish the book and do not leave it half-written. You do not have to create something perfect. You are making something real and that is much, much more important. I want to read this book. (A/N I agree with this. Your book doesn't need to be perfect especially in first couple of drafs. Also your book will never feel perfect too you even if it were the best book out there!)
