we love predictable people
"We should probably get some sleep." Shuichi mumbled. He knew that what he was saying was true, but truth be told, that was the last thing he wanted. There was no other way to put it; he wanted to stay with Shuichi. Holding his hand felt nice, and that kind of physical comfort was something he needed every now and again.
"Yeah, I feel like I could just fall asleep right here anyways." He lied.
"Do you need anything else?" Shuichi asked. There was one thing, and he knew he would feel stupid for asking, and that he'd say no, but he might as well try it.
"Actually, there is one little teensy-weensy thing. Do you mind if I sleep in your room, just for tonight? I just I feel like it would make me feel more safe." He cringed internally while still keeping his cool outer exterior, immediately regretting the decision to ask at all. "Actually, just forget about it. I'm perfectly fine out here."
"No, I don't mind, as long as you don't." Shuichi replied, catching him beginning to build up his wall of lies once again and tearing it down before he could get too far. Kokichi was surprised by him responding positively, but gathered himself as soon as he could.
"Wow, that desperate, huh? Well, if you insist!" Kokichi jumped off of the counter and immediately began heading upstairs. Shuichi was confused, as he was the one who asked in the first place.
Kokichi couldn't deny how tired he felt, despite not wanting to try and fall asleep, but he hoped staying in his room would give him some comfort. He had briefly looked through his stuff while he was gone, finding nothing but clothing, homework, and detective stuff, but that didn't really count.
Shuichi gave a quiet laugh and headed off after the boy, still not having completely gotten used to how fast he changed.
"You can go on the bed. As soon as I can, I'll work on getting you a room of your own, alright?" Shuichi said as the two of them headed into the bedroom. Kokichi didn't have to be told twice. He crawled onto the bed and burrowed under the blankets until only the top of his head was visible.
"Thanks. I appreciate it..." Kokichi yawned.
"Yeah, it's no problem. Sleep well. I'll be on the couch if you need anything." Shuichi replied, before turning around and starting to walk out the door. He half-expected him to wake up the next morning only for Kokichi to announce that he was stealing his room, but that was a problem for future Shuichi, and it wasn't as if he was about to kick him out.
"Hey, wait." It had become a common occurrence for him start to do something, and the other stopping him. It almost came as no surprise to him anymore.
"Yeah?" He turned around.
"There's enough room in the bed for both of us. I'm not gonna take up that much space. You can stay in here, if you want..." Shuichi flushed a little bit, grateful that he had his face buried away in a pillow and was too tired to try and look up and see.
"I mean, if you're comfortable with that, th-then-"
"Just shut up and go to sleep before I change my mind." His words were too sleep-ridden and quiet to have that much strength to them, but they still carried impact. Shuichi nodded, still feeling quite flustered and wishing very much that that feeling would go away.
"Alright."
He climbed into the bed on the other side of Kokichi, getting under the covers and settling in to a comfortable position. Despite them having almost two feet of distance between them, Shuichi still felt slightly... uncomfortable? No, that's not the word. Just strange. He had never shared a bed with anyone in his life.
He tried to put as much distance between himself and the other as possible, as not to make him feel awkward. He guessed by his lack of movement or words that Kokichi was asleep already, so there probably wasn't much to worry about, but regardless of whether or not it was rational, he still did.
He took a deep breath, closing his eyes and trying to get accustomed to the knowledge that someone else was sleeping in his bed. However, the initial feeling quickly melted away due to how tired he was. Everything soon faded to black except the urge to go to sleep and put a cap on the long and stressful day, and so that's exactly what he did, closing his eyes and falling into a heavy and peaceful sleep.
---
Shuichi's slowly opened his golden eyes, blinking a few times and taking in his surroundings as he became conscious and aware. It took a moment for Shuichi's sleep-ridden mind to register that something was clinging onto him, but the minute he noticed the sensation, he was wide awake immediately.
It was Kokichi.
His arms were loosely wrapped around his chest and his legs around his lower body, clinging onto him as if he were some sort of human teddy bear, Shuichi's arm around his shoulders. His cheeks flushed red and his heart immediately began to race as he became aware of the position they were in. Kokichi was still asleep, softly snoring with his face nuzzled into Shuichi's side. He tried to calm his racing thoughts and try and find a logical course of action.
After a moment of trying to stay as still and silent as possible while internally having something of an emotional crisis, he decided that he should get up and go downstairs. He didn't want the boy to wake up and realize what had happened. He doubted anything good could come of that.
He gently pried the sleeping Kokichi off of him, getting off of the bed and quietly walking over to the bedroom door, trying his best not to knock anything over or make too much noise with his footsteps. He walked out of the room, gently closing it to let Kokichi sleep, before running downstairs to the kitchen.
Okay, okay, okay, calm down, it's fine... he just got cold in the middle of the night and found the nearest heat source. Yeah, whatever, that's fine. It doesn't mean anything. I'm fine. Everything's fine and dandy and fantastic.
If that's true, why do I feel so weird?
Shuichi wiped his eyes with the back of his hands to shake off the leftover grogginess and try to make the feeling disappear. He stood up from the table, nearly kicking the chair over and wandering over to the cabinet to pull out a loaf of bread. He began to work on breakfast, trying his best to push the incident to the back of his mind, but unable to get it completley out of his head.
