"Kokichi, hey. C'mon." I give him a gentle shake on the shoulder to wake him up, watching as his eyes slowly flutter open. He sits up and yawns.
"Ugh, I was sleeping. What do you want?" He asked groggily. He must have forgotten about yesterday.
We were eating dinner when suddenly, he made a request that was a bit strange. He asked if he could come to school with me today. I didn't really understand why he was asking, as he could just go there after I left and not have to go to the trouble of me even knowing, but I wasn't going to say no to something so simple.
"We have to go to school. You said you wanted to come today."
"Oh." He blinks a few times. "Yeah, I guess you're right."
"Get dressed. Breakfast will be in the kitchen."
He stepped off of the couch and stretched his arms over his head before pulling something out of the drawer I kept reserved for him, wandering into the bathroom to change. I walk into the kitchen and open some cabinets, contemplating what to make. I'm not sure what he prefers as far as breakfast goes. I'm almost always either asleep or gone most mornings before he's up. I eventually settled on some eggs and toast, which is what I typically eat.
"Hey," I hear him from the kitchen doorway and look up. He looks nicer than usual. He typically has on that same hoodie and sweatpants, his scarf, and wild and untamed hair. He's clearly brushed his hair, so it looks shiny and smooth, and he has on a black hoodie that actually fits him with a checkered stripe across the chest, tucked into a pair of jeans. He still has on his scarf, as usual.
"You look nice." I can't stop the compliment and I wait for him to tease me, but instead, he smiles.
"Thanks! You're not so bad yourself!" That particular comment makes me feel unnecessarily flustered. I turn away from him and stare at the eggs determinedly.
After a few minutes of cooking in silence, I place the food onto two plates and set one down in front of him. "I don't know what you usually eat for breakfast, so I just made what I usually have. If you want something else, I can make it for you." I stated sheepishly.
"Oh, it's fine! I don't usually eat breakfast."
This takes me by surprise. I try to say something in response questioning why and telling him that it's not a good idea to skip meals, but he interrupted me. "I don't usually eat lunch, either. I guess I just forget to eat when you're not here."
He said it so nonchalantly, as if it's something perfectly natural. It's one thing to miss one meal every now and then, but two? Well, now I know why he's so skinny and small for his age.
"Kokichi, you really shouldn't do that. You need to eat."
"Why?"
"It's not healthy. Is something wrong?" I ask. There might be something more going on, and if that's the case, I want to help.
"Oh, no, not at all. I just don't usually feel the need to eat! I'm never hungry, really. Except when you make me food. Time just passes on, and I don't pay any attention to what I feel like, so maybe I am hungry but I just don't notice. And I don't skip lunch all the time, just sometimes."
