Ashleigh turned around in the mirror. She furrowed her eyebrows and sucked in her stomach in effort to make it look smaller. She stomped her foot and gripped the little bit of fat and muscle on her thigh. Ashleigh began to brainstorm a list of ways to lose some weight. She turned again so that she was facing the mirror. Ashleigh hated the way her thighs touched, and her collarbones were only visible if she moved her arms a certain way. Ashleigh sighed and pulled her brown hair into a high ponytail. She put on a pair of black shorts, along with a flower-patterned, fitted crop top.
"Ashleigh," her mother, Marianne, called for Ashleigh from downstairs. "Could you come down for some breakfast love?" Ashleigh began to panic. She hated eating meals with her mother because she had to do exactly that; eat the meal. During the school-week, it was much easier for Ashleigh to forget to grab breakfast on her way out to school. She would occasionally forget to pack her lunch. All that Ashleigh had to eat during the week was a little bit of dinner, depending on how early her mother got home.
"Sure thing, Mother. I'm on my way." Ashleigh replied. She adjusted her hair, making sure there were no loose strands of hair hanging out of the ponytail. She checked her reflection once more, and decided to put on a bit of lip gloss.
"What's taking you so long, Ashleigh? We won't be going out today. I prepared us something for breakfast." Marianne made her way to the bottom of the staircase to call up to her daughter.
"I'm not even taking that long, Mom." Ashleigh told her. "I'm just getting dressed. I'll be down soon." Ashleigh finished putting on her lip gloss and put on a bit of mascara. She slid on her house slippers and walked down the spiral staircase, turning left into the kitchen.
"I made enough to last the whole week, so you can go ahead and choose what you'd like." Ashleigh's mother said. She watched as her daughter quickly scanned over the choices of food.
"Thanks Momma," Ashleigh said. She hugged her mom and looked over at the food that her mom prepared for them. There were a few strips of bacon, but that had a lot of fat in it, so it wasn't an option. Next to it was a plate of pancakes, but that was filled with carbohydrates. Ashleigh settled on a small bowl of fruit, with a small yogurt parfait. She made her way over to the breakfast bar, and her mother sat down next to her, placing a plate of pancakes and eggs on the counter.
"How was your week, love?" Marianne asked. She was often out of the house, and never got to see her daughter until the weekends. She tried to maximize the time they could spend together by having the two of them have meals together, and activities like going to the mall, or watching a movie.
"It was great, Mom." Ashleigh forced a smile. "Jennifer and the girls and I went out to the mall and got a bunch of stuff. And I got a haircut and some new highlights. Did you notice?" Ashleigh showed her lighter colored hair trapped in her ponytail. In addition to going out with her friends, Ashleigh had forced Jen to go on a run with her. She managed to convince all of her friends that they needed to start exercising more, and what better way to exercise than with all your friends?
"It's so cute on you," Marianne gushed. She was glad that Ashleigh was finally going out and enjoying herself. "Did you go to Hair Cuttery?"
Ashleigh rolled her eyes. "Yes Momma, I know that we don't go anywhere else. The girls got some dip dye or whatever, but I got Karen to do my highlights and cut."
"Good." Her mother smiled. The corner of her lipstick stained lip turned the slightest bit up. "I'm glad that you're getting out of the house more. It's ideal that you have your fun before you have to worry about working and paying bills."
"Yeah," Ashleigh mumbled. She had finished her fruits and began to swirl her granola around in her yogurt. She always hated having fruit in her yogurt, and thankfully her mom had remembered to put it on the side.
"So Ashleigh," Marianne slid her empty plate toward the sink."One of my friends from university, Joy, will be coming over later. The two of us haven't been able to talk face to face for a while, and I am just now finding out that she lives relatively close to us. She told me that she would be bringing her son and daughter with her when she comes over later today. I ask that you be on your best hostess behavior, because I would rather you not give a bad first impression. I don't want to find anything in the house out of place. Now could you please tidy up the three guest rooms, and check on the entertainment area? I'll be here on the main floor."
Ashleigh swallowed some more of her yogurt. She didn't think that anything needed to be done in any of the guest rooms, seeing as no one used them, but she would still do as her mom asked.
"Yes mother. I'll start in the bedroom that's next to mine." Ashleigh got up and scraped her leftover yogurt into the trash. She rinsed out her bowl, as well as her mother's plate, and put them in the dishwasher.
Ashleigh jogged up the stairs and into the bedroom that was directly next to hers. It had a bathroom that connected the room to her room. She rearranges some of the pillows on the bed, and made sure that she sheets were put on nicely. Ashleigh went into the other two rooms, which each had their own smaller bathrooms, and adjusted the pillows and the decor that sat on the dressers.
Once satisfied with her work, Ashleigh made her way back into her room and flopped onto her bed. She took out her phone and put it on her iHome dual speaker docking system. Ashleigh opened up the Spotify app and decided to shuffle play Halsey. She quietly sang along to Colors as she waited for her mother's friend, along with her two kids, to arrive.
