When Marianne came back to the house with Joy and Mali, she headed straight to the kitchen to warm up some dinner. She opened up the refrigerator where she had food from previous nights stored. "Ashleigh, come help me prepare this food."

"Just a second, Mom." Ashleigh responded. She lead the Hoods into their den just down the hall. "You can watch a bit of television if you'd like. Mom is going to let you know when she's ready."

"Thank you, love." Joy said on the behalf of the three of them. Ashleigh began to walk back to the kitchen. She found herself sliding her feet across the floor, since her steps sounded so heavy when she walked on the hard tile floor.

"Would you get out the noodles and the chicken?" Marianne asked. Ashleigh nodded and opened up the fridge. She took out a large pan of macaroni and cheese that they prepared the previous night, and a rotisserie chicken from Costco. The thought of eating so much food made Ashleigh feel sick.

"Microwave or oven?" Ashleigh asked her mom.

"Chicken in the oven." Marianne replied. Ashleigh transferred the chicken into a baking tray, and preheated the oven to 350 degrees. She took out some rice from the fridge, and held onto her achy stomach with one hand. It took Ashleigh a lot of effort not to throw up the bite if Calum's pizza she had just had.

"Ashleigh, go change out of what you have on." Marianne ordered.

"But why, Mom? I look fine." Ashleigh whined. She grouchily put the cold food into the oven and set a timer for 20 minutes.

"I didn't ask you if you wanted to change, I told you to go and do so. Now go." Marianne continued to move things around in the kitchen and warm food up in the microwave.

"Whatever." Ashleigh mumbled inaudibly. She dragged herself up the stairs and went through the hallway and into her bedroom. Ashleigh opened her closet door, and looked at the three walls of clothes that were hung up in rainbow order. She walked in toward the cool colors and picked out a blue and purple galaxy skirt.

"Maybe with black..." Ashleigh said to herself. She walked a couple steps to the blacks and whites, and took out one of her many fitted black crop tops. She quickly changed into her outfit, and kept on her knee socks. Before leaving her bedroom, Ashleigh grabbed a blue glitter hair bow, and clipped it onto her ponytail. A few strands of hair were left out in order to frame her face. Ashleigh quickly made her way back downstairs as she heard the timer go off.

"Go to the round table, Ashleigh. You can have a seat between Mali and Calum." Marianne told her daughter. Ashleigh made her way to the table and took a seat between the two Hood kids.

"You look really nice," Calum leaned over and whispered in Ashleigh's ear. The sudden impact of his warm breath on Ashleigh's cold skin caused her to shiver. She could smell a little bit of cologne clinging to his clothes.

"Thanks." Ashleigh smiled down at her lap. She played with the edge of her skirt, subconsciously bringing it higher up her thigh. "I mean thank you. I really appreciate the compliment."

Calum laughed and pushed a loose strand of Ashleigh's hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered on her skin, and left Ashleigh's ears red with a blush. "It's alright. You don't have to be formal around me, remember?"

" I'll try not to be," Ashleigh replied as a small smile appeared on her lips. Ashleigh's smile disappeared as she saw her mother bringing food to the table. An abundance of noodles and broccoli and chicken and carrots and soup made its way to the middle of the table.

"You alright?" Calum asked as he noticed Ashleigh's light and happy smile change into a look of pure horror.

"I'm fine. Just fine." Ashleigh responded. She flashed a weak smile, and began to count in her head how much she would be able to eat without exceeding her calorie budget. She tapped softly on her thigh as she added up numbers in her head.

"Would you like some?" Calum asked Ashleigh as he put macaroni and cheese on his plate. Ashleigh slowly nodded, and Calum scooped a spoonful and a half onto her plate. She widened her eyes at how much he gave her, but took the warm tray and passed it to Mali.

Marianne, Joy, and Mali engaged in conversation, and Calum occasionally chimed in. Ashleigh nodded every now and then, but focused her attention on mashing her noodles with her fork. She occasionally ate a little bit whenever one of the three looked over at her. Becoming bored, Ashleigh began to scrape her food from one side of the plate to the other.

She was unaware of the fact that everyone had stopped their chatter, and her mother drummed her long fingernails on the table. Oblivious to the sympathetic look Joy had on her face, and Mali trying her hardest not to get caught texting. It was only when Calum poked her leg that Ashleigh noticed all of the attention on her. Calum discreetly stabbed at his food with his fork, and Ashleigh widened her eyes and began shovelling noodles into her mouth.

"Excuse me. I need to the restroom." Ashleigh said. She held her hand over her mouth as she swallowed the little bit of food in her mouth. She walked quickly upstairs to her bathroom, and looked for her jar of Popsicle sticks. She took one out and put it to the back of her throat, causing herself to gag into the toilet. Ashleigh blinked back tears, and rinsed out her mouth with water. She checked to make sure her makeup wasn't running, and smiled at her reflection in the mirror. She held her head high, and made her way back downstairs.
