Ashleigh had dozed off while listening to Halsey, and was rudely awoken by the door bell being rung repetitively. She groaned and paused her music as she got out of bed and went to the bathroom to fix her hair, and make sure that her makeup had not gotten messed up. Satisfied with her appearance, Ashleigh made her way downstairs to get the door.
"Ashleigh." Marianne made her way toward her daughter. She took Ashleigh by the wrist and gently pulled her away from the door. "What did I just tell you about first impressions?"
Ashleigh sighed. "To make good first impressions."
"So tell me, why are you dressed like you're going to school? And you haven't had a pedicure recently, so I suggest that you put on some socks." Marianne sent Ashleigh back upstairs. Ashleigh skimmed through her closet, and settled on a galaxy bandeau top with a black skater skirt. She put on a pair of black knee socks, then headed back downstairs. The doorbell rang again.
"Better." Marianne told her daughter. "Now please go get the door before our door bell runs out of battery."
Ashleigh laughed at her mom and walked toward the door. When she opened the door, three impatient looking faces were looking at her. The first that she saw was the woman in the middle. She looked to be her mother's college friend, Joy. She had short, dark hair that she kept tied back, a slightly large nose, and pink lipstick on her thin lips. The crinkles in the corners of her eyes served as evidence that she smiled a lot. Ashleigh thought that her mother could only benefit from being friends with such a friendly-looking person.
Oh her right was a girl who was just a little bit older than Ashleigh. She had the same dark brown eyes as her mother, and white straight teeth. She smiled at Ashleigh, who smiled back, and noticed how perfect the girl's eyebrows were. Her long, dark hair was highlighted in a shade similar to Ashleigh's natural hair color.
Finally, Ashleigh saw who she had been secretly wondering about all morning: Joy's son. His eyes were a dark brown color that seemed to change from an endless sea of black, to a smooth, chocolatey color. His eyebrows were messy, but Ashleigh found it adorable. He had dark, soft looking hair with a blond patch dyed in. His cheeks were adorably chubby, but his jawline was extremely sharp at the same time.
"Hi, I'm Ashleigh. You can come in, it's great to meet you all. My mom should be right over here." Ashleigh let in Joy and her kids, and closed the door behind them. She lead them to the kitchen, which is where she would usually find her mom. Ashleigh, on the other hand, hated the kitchen.
"Hello, love. It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Joy. Your mom talks about you a good bit." Joy opened her arms and took ashleigh into a hug.
"It's obviously all good things," Ashleigh joked, and laughed along with Joy. Behind Joy, her son looked at his toes, and rocked back and forth on his feet. He had his hands stuffed in the pockets of his black skinny jeans. Her daughter was looking at her phone screen, typing furiously.
"Of course it is," Joy said. "And these two here are my kids, who have yet to introduce themselves." Ashleigh quietly snickered as she noticed a blush creeping up the boy's neck.
"I'm sorry about that. I hardly even noticed we were doing introductions. I'm Mali-Koa, but please feel free to just call me Mali."
"I absolutely love your hair," Ashleigh said. Mali took some of her crimped hair in her hands, and ran her fingers through it.
"Babe have you seen your hair? Your natural color is gorgeous." Mali complimented.
"Aw, thank you so much." Ashleigh said to Mali, who discreetly nudged her little brother.
"Oh, hey, um, I'm Calum." He stuck out his right hand, and raked his fingers through his hair with his other hand.
"He's never usually this shy," Mali smirked. Ashleigh shook Calum's hand, which was warm, and slightly rough and calloused.
"Shut up, Mali." Calum glared at his sister as his face became redder.
"I'll leave you kids to get to know each other. Ashleigh, do you know where your mom is?" Joy said.
"She should be in the living room which is right down this hall," Ashleigh told her. "It's the third door on the right, I believe."
"Thank you, dear." Joy said. She smiled warmly at Ashleigh, who she had already began to take a liking to, and made her way down the hallway she was directed to take.
"I'm going as well, have fun kids." Mali turned around and winked quickly, before she speed-walked to catch up with her mom.
"So," Ashleigh said in an attempt to break the silence. "Would you like to have a snack? There's plenty of fruit, and we actually have a good amount of food left over from breakfast." She walked over the fridge and looked for something that Calum might like. "We have some leftover pizza."
"Is it Hawaiian?" Calum asked. Ashleigh nodded, and took out the Domino's box from the fridge. She opened the box to show Calum the pizza inside. "Could I have a slice?"
"Sure thing." Ashleigh stood on her tiptoes and reached for a plate, unaware of Calum staring at her slowly rising skirt. Calum chewed on his bottom lip, and averted his gaze to the countertop.
"I warmed up two slices. That's fine, right? Do you mind if i take some of the second slice?" Ashleigh mentally cursed at herself for bringing up the possibility that she could want food. She was beyond full.
Calum licked his lips. "Of course. You can actually have the whole second slice if you want it." Ashleigh walked around next to Calum, and took a slice of pizza off of the plate. She took a bite out of it, and left a bit of lip gloss where her mouth had been. Ashleigh put the pizza back on the plate and smiled to herself.
"Thanks Calum," she said before she walked back over to the staircase, and up to her bedroom, leaving Calum extremely confused as to what had just happened.
