4. - It is so quiet

It is the middle of the night and Zhan and I are awake. At first the two groups were still partying loudly until about one o'clock in the night, then it was quiet. Eerie quiet, I would say.

In a forest, especially at night, it should not be so quiet. I've camped more than once and in more than one forest to know that especially at night, when the animals are running around, there are sounds everywhere. Rustling or cracking. Besides, it has also become very windy, so we should be able to hear the wind through the trees as well. But there is nothing, it is just eerily quiet.

When Meng Yao and Leni, whose tent is to the left of us and only a few meters away, called over to us, we got a big fright, because their calling broke the sinister silence of the night.

The two of them, after we answered them, came over to our tent and then the four of us sat in our little tent.Meng Yao showed us that he had really goosebumps and that although it is certainly still 25°degrees and in the tents it seems to be even warmer.

Han, our guide also came to us when he noticed that we are still awake. He explained to us that the forest is so dense that it swallows all sounds. Which is why, in his opinion, it is so quiet. "I've spent the night here many times and it's always been like this. And, honestly, I don't think there have been any animals here for a long time. The trees are too dense to let enough light through, which prevents the vegetation from spreading. No food for the plant eaters, and without plant eaters, no flesh eaters."

His explanation sounded logical yes, but still did not reassure us. Something is wrong here in this forest and I am not wild to find out what it is.

We chatted like this for a bit more. Meng Yao criticized that we don't have a signal here with our cell phones and can't contact anyone in case of emergency. Han said that this is just the way it is, no one lives here who uses a cell phone.

But, Han gave us another good hint. If something happens, there are markings on trees to guide us from the camp back to the road. "They are just arrows carved into trees, but, they will take you back to the road. I already told the elder Wang." Said he.

"My brother? Mhhh, he didn't tell us." I replied angrily.

"Maybe he wants to keep the creepy effect going a little longer." Tried Han giving as a reason.

The stories of the old ones were creepy enough, how much more do we need? Why can't my brother understand that not everyone is into horror stories like that? He seems quite changed to me anyway, since yesterday when we came to Cheng and the others.

Actually, my brother is someone of the calm and level-headed kind. He doesn't do anything without thinking carefully and weighing things up. But when he is with Cheng, he behaves like a macho man. I don't know this from him at all. Does he want to prove to Cheng what a great guy he is? How brave he is? Well, I think it's quite enough for him to be himself.

We sat together for maybe half an hour before the others went back to their tents and Zhan and I tried sleeping again. Whereby Zhan asked me if I could hold his hand until he fell asleep, because then he would feel safer.

Of course, I immediately reached out my hand to him and felt safer myself right away. No matter what Han said about the noises, it is and always will be creepy.

*~*~*

At 8am, our night was over. We were still terribly tired and the first thing I noticed again was the absence of any typical forest sounds. I had to think of my home, because whenever I get up in the morning and open a window, the first thing I hear is this gang of birds that seem to have made it their personal mission to terrorize me. Now here in the forest, where there seems to be not one bird, I miss these little feathered terrorists.
