15 - Other survivors

The man apparently saw no danger in us and shouted loudly, "You can come out and you won't believe who's here."

Shortly after, from behind the door to this station, a young woman entered and ran crying and shrieking when she saw Rin and May. "Mom, mom," she screamed as she did so.

May opened her eyelids fluttering and looked at the girl. She immediately started crying and spread her arms. "My little Ziyi." She said in a hoarse voice. Rin froze and looked at the girl with wide eyes.

We found May's daughter, her sister and brother-in-law. They survived!

After a long and heartfelt greeting with lots of tears, everyone calmed down a bit. The three of them took us to the station a floor below where they were settled. Zhan and I had tried to open the door to the development station, but it was locked. Now we know why.

But what this station should have to do with development is a mystery to me. Here there are the normal patient rooms as in the other stations. There is a large kitchen with all the equipment, a meeting room for patients with TV and DVD player, a laboratory fully equipped, a nurses' room and two large bathrooms.

After they showed us around, we all went to the meeting room where Julia, May's sister and Jay, May's brother-in-law, offered us water and some canned food. But at that moment, none of us wanted to drink or eat anything.

May held her daughter in her arms and asked, "What happened?"

Jay sat up straight and told us her story. "It's probably like you guys, too. We were going to explore the cave a little bit. We had gotten as far as a lake in the cave and were actually going to go back. But then we heard noises that sounded like growling. Ziyi panicked and just ran. Julia and I followed her, further and further into the cave. We were able to catch up with Ziyi, but then we couldn't find the way back. We were wandering around there with only a flashlight, we had no water, no food, because Ziyi had dropped her backpack at the lake and left it there when she just started running. Again and again these creatures came and chased us. They drove us further and further into the cave. And then, we found the door that took us into this institute. I think you came through the same door."

"And how did you survive here for four years?" Rin asked.

"Four years already? Oh man, they told us we would only have to stay here for a few weeks, maybe a few months." Julia replied.

Meng Yao immediately shouted, "They? What do you mean they?"

Jay scratched his shoulder and seemed to be thinking of the right words. "Actually, we don't know who they are. We've never seen them. They communicate with us over the loudspeakers, but rarely. Once a week they deliver food and water to us. Also, medicine, washing powder, hygiene products, clothes, actually everything we need to survive. Once a month they connect us through the computer at the registration desk, but we can't do anything there except talk to a man who actually always asks us the same questions about how we're doing, what we're missing, what we're dreaming about, that kind of thing."

"You're not telling me that you've been living here for 4 years, made yourselves comfortable, and haven't figured out how to get out of here, haven't asked why you're being held here, nor found a way to get you out. And instead waited it out quietly?" I asked him angrily.

"Of course we asked questions. But they didn't answer most of them. They told us they couldn't let us go yet. It would be related to the cave. There's supposed to be some kind of plague or something that's contagious and they said we had to stay so we wouldn't spread it." Replied Jay hastily.
