These pictures were taken in the "Heilstätten" of Beelitz (Berlin, Germany).

The former clinic about forty kilometers from Berlin is in any case a place steeped in history: construction of the clinic began as early as 1898, but the hospital and sanatorium were not completely finished until 1930, as the city of Beelitz writes on its website. During the First and Second World Wars, the buildings served as a military hospital for wounded soldiers. Even Hitler had himself treated there, as the Action Alliance Brandenburg against Violence, Right-Wing Extremism and Xenophobia reports.

In 1945, the Red Army appropriated the hospital and until 1994 it was considered the largest military hospital of the Soviet Army and later the Russian Army abroad. In 1990, Erich Honecker was treated there for liver cancer.

The story of the Beelitz sanatoriums gets creepier, however: the serial killer "Rosa Riese" murdered a young doctor's wife and her baby nearby in 1991. In 2008, a photographer allegedly killed a model there and made love with her corpse. In 2011, according to Potsdamer Neueste Nachrichten, a homeless man hanged himself in the ruins after living there for some time.

Nevertheless, the morbid place seems to be slowly transforming: In the meantime, parts of the buildings have been renovated; they now house a neurological rehabilitation clinic, among other things. Other ruins are also currently being renovated; according to the project developers of Refugium Beelitz, studio apartments for creative people are being built there.

According to them, they want to transform the former sanatoriums with the eerie reputation into an "idyllic ,,'Creative Village'".

The city of Beelitz warns against exploring the sanatoriums on one's own: About ten years ago, the partly dilapidated Sanatorium buildings were the target of adventurous youths and looters, reports city spokesman Thomas Lähns. Some creepy fans had injured themselves there and one youth had died in a fall from a window.

Finally, there are many rumors about the Beelitz Sanatorium / the Heilstätten. Like that a woman was euthanized or cruel experiments on the patients should have taken place.
