27 - The traitor

I looked at my phone at least every 15 minutes to check the time. Because in this small room, it became more and more unbearable. The exhaust gases caused by the generator were dispersed in the room and only went away very, very slowly. We got a headache from this stench and our already great thirst, only got worse.

Around 1 am, my brother then forced Han to turn off the generator. We all felt sick, our heads hurt and everything was spinning around us. We were on the verge of just passing out. Also, the creatures heard the generator and the banging on the hatch only increased.

Zhan lit the kerosene lamps and we enjoyed the silence. We watched as the smoke from the room slowly dissipated. The drumming on the hatch finally stopped a few minutes after the generator was turned off.

At 6 am, my brother climbed up the ladder and carefully opened the hatch. It was light outside and the creatures retreated again. One by one we all climbed up.

Our bodies ached, we were completely overtired and felt like drunks. Han pointed in the direction we had to go. Now we were no longer running, we were walking. Every step felt effortful. We didn't look around anymore, we just followed Han and wanted to get out of here.

Again and again we fell, got up and kept walking. The sun hurt our eyes a little, heating us up even more, and our thirst was nearly growing immeasurably. Zhan stumbled along beside me, muttering, "I feel fear."

"What, from one of us?" I asked him quietly.

"Mhm. Someone here is afraid. I'm just too tired to make out who it is. We should be careful. Do you still have the knife Han gave you?"

"Yes, I do. I hope we won't need it."

"I hope so, too. But I have a very, very bad feeling. Just be careful, promise me." Said Zhan. He sounded so worried at that, that I forgot about my tiredness and pain, even my thirst.

"I promise you Zhan." I whispered and took him by my hand again.

And finally, at 10 am, we reached the cave and everything was still there. Everything was just as we left it. The creatures didn't seem to care.

Zhan and I ran to our tent, crawled inside and each grabbed a water bottle and drank it immediately. The swallowing had even really hurt at the beginning, so dried up were our throats.

We changed in the tent and packed our things together. But I would have preferred to lie down on my sleeping bag, take Zhan in my arms and sleep.

Han called us all over after a few minutes and said we should rest here for at least 1 - 2 hours before taking the long way back. He took his satellite phone and said he would call his colleague and ask him to tell the local police what we have experienced and that there are murderous creatures here.

Zhan who was very attentive asked him, "Why do you need your backpack to make a phone call?"

My brother stopped Han and told him to answer Zhan's question, when Han just kept walking and didn't respond to Zhan. " I, I just want to get used to the weight already." Explained Han stuttering.

"Like hell! You're lying! What are you trying to do you asshole? Are you going to leave us here alone?" Zhan asked, angry.

Han again didn't respond and my brother pushed him back and further into the cave. Again and again he told him to answer the questions. But Han just kept silent. He even tried to push past my brother to get out of the cave.

Leni yelled at Han and asked him why he wanted to leave us here alone. Yanli yelled as well and suddenly everyone seemed to be screaming. Until, well, until Han pulled out a gun and pressed it to my brother's chest. By then no one was screaming and just staring at the gun in shock.
