I glance at Max.
Should I tell him I'm leaving?
Yes.
But he looks so peaceful and he's working so efficiently!
Ok. I won't.
I look back at the elevator as the doors ding open and step in. I hit the button for the ground floor and glance back at Max.
He hasn't moved; he doesn't even look up. Damn that music must be loud.
The doors close and I pull out my phone.
One new message, from Riley.
"I'm bringing the car around now, sir."
I nod.
I open my phone and scroll through my messages.
I nod again.
So Jax is bringing the new girlfriend for dinner tonight, ok! I see you!
Ok so...
I pull out my phone and quickly order 4 pizzas.
As I finish, the elevator doors open for the lobby floor and I step out.
"Have a good evening Mr. Silvers." Larry, the security guard, says with a tip of his hat.
"Good night Larry. Tell Linda I say hello." I say and he smiles.
"I will, sir."
I nod and open the front doors.
I see Riley and the car, my preferred BMW x5, as soon as I step out. The sky has turned a dark gray, so I hurry to my car and open the door.
I like the rain, just not when I'm caught out in it.
"Where to, sir?" Riley asks as soon as I'm in the car, her curly brown hair near black in the dim lighting.
"Well... let's go to the suburbs house. Jax will meet us there."
"Ok, sir."
She shifts gears and pulls away from the curb as I pull my phone out.
I open Instagram and scroll through my feed for a little, looking at photos of old friends, before giving up with a sigh. I glance at the time, still 20 minutes until we get to the house.
Suddenly Riley slams on the breaks and I rock forward into the seat in front of me.
"Fucking kids! Watch where you're walking!" She yells, her southern accent growing stronger in her agitation. "Sorry for swearing."
But I pay her no mind as I watch the boy who cut in front of us run to the sidewalk with a look of pure panic on his face.
"Riley pull over." I order and hop out of the car.
Without looking back, I run after the boy as the clouds begin to open up and rain begins to fall.
I follow his mop of unruly, messy brown hair and it isn't long till I catch up with him.
We run down 5 streets and turn 3 corners before I tap his arm.
He jumps and turns to me and I freeze.
He's super short. Like I'm 6 foot 6, but he's maybe 5 foot 1. Maybe. He has messy brown hair and the brightest, most beautiful blue eyes I've ever seen. He's wearing tight jeans, but a sweatshirt that is at least 3 sizes too large. He looks super cute and I find myself staring at him.
"Maxwell Frost!" He yells suddenly and I startle, my eyes widening.
"What?"
"Maxwell Frost!" He says again. "Do you know him? I need to find him."
"Woah, woah calm down!" I demand and he flinches, hard.
"No, please sir, I need to find Maxwell Frost." He says, the panic clear in his voice.
"Why? Look, are you ok?"
"No, I'm not."
"What's your name? Do you need to go to the hospital?" I ask hurriedly, giving him a once-over.
"No!" He says suddenly and takes 3 steps backwards. "I need to find Maxwell Frost."
"Woah buddy, it's ok. I know where he is, I'll take you to him. What's your name?" The rain is starting to come down harder now.
"Era."
"No surname?"
He shakes his head.
I freeze, confused. What? Is this boy on drugs? Man, he's so beautiful, please don't let him be on drugs!
But then what the fuck is he talking about? And how does he know Max?
"Uh ok..." I say, like an idiot.
Era nods hurriedly.
"I need to find Maxwell Frost." He says again and I nod.
"Ok, ok." I placate softly, trying to calm him down. He looks like he's going to explode. "I know where he is. Just walk with me Era, you can get in my car and it'll be ok. I'll take you there."
"N-n-no!" He stammers, taking another step back. "Please, please no. Don't send me back!" He begs, his beautiful eyes filling with tears.
The fuck?
Back where?
Is he ok? Did somebody abuse him??
"Era, are you ok?"
"Fine! Yes, I'm fine! Now take me to Maxwell Frost!" He demands and freezes, his eyes wide. "W-wait I'm sorry. I didn't mean to raise my voice, please don't be mad." He begs softly, his tears mixing with the rain as it falls down his face. He wipes at his face and his sleeve falls, revealing an arm covered in bruises and scars.
Definitely abused then.
But how does he know Max?
"I'm not mad, look. It's ok Era, I won't let them hurt you." I say and he nods.
"Please take me to Maxwell."
"Why?"
"Because he's in danger!" Era says and my eyes widen.
