Tobias does not show up for work the next day. Today is my last day of initiation. "Beatrice, have you seen Tobias?" My mother asks me. Yesterday I told her not to tell my father about me and Tobias and thankfully she hadn't said a word yet. She asked me why but I told her I didn't know. She looked at me confused but ended up telling me we had to do something eventually and she trusted me to do the right thing. I appreciate her for trusting me.
I feel lonely while doing the work since I never made any other friends. I see a girl picking up a box and decide to be friendly. All abnegation look pretty much the same but this girl is a little different. She has brown hair in a knot like mine and brown eyes. My eyes are blue. "Hello," I say with a smile. I get nervous and the box in my hand feels heavy suddenly. "Hello," She says. She doesn't know me. How could she anyway? "I'm Beatrice," I say and she smiles. "Christina," She says and holds out her hand. Definitely a transfer. I shake her hand hesitantly and her cheeks get red when I tell her, "We don't do that here, but I'll let you slide.". "Sorry! We used to shake hands in Candor. I never knew how much had until I had less of everything." A Candor. Christina has light brown skin and she's actually very pretty. "I understand, you'll get used to it." I've already made my new friend.
Cristina and I talk for a little while and I find really fun to talk to. I'm glad I got the chance to get to know her. I forget all about Tobias until Christina and I are handing out some food and she asks, "So are you guys even allowed to have boyfriends here? How do you get married?". She asks lots of questions but this one still confuses me. "I think everyone secretly dates someone for a while, tells their parents they like someone then the families have dinner and decide if they deserve you." My answer was mostly a joke but it's also true. "So Tobias is pretty cute, are you guys secretly dating?" Sometimes I wish Candors would keep their mouths shut a little more. "Where did that come from?" I ask. "It's kind of obvious. You guys are always around each other." I guess it isn't very secret anymore. "How did you know his name and not mine?" I ask confused. "How did you know I didn't? I didn't come here yesterday. Now answer my question." "It's complicated-" She frowns. "Complicated? You guys are so cute!" "I don't know... We're trying to figure it out but there were complications and-" I talk to Christina like I've known her in another life. "Whatt??" "Stop whining! Like I said, it's complicated. I don't want to talk about it anymore." I end the conversation and she seems to understand. We have run out of food now so we walk back to the justice building in silence.

I haven't heard from Tobias for 3 days and I'm worried. Today we pick our jobs. Christina and I chose to continue working with my mom and giving food to factionless. I wake up earlier than usual out of excitement. After we pick ur jobs there is a ceremony welcoming all the new members.
I wear something nice and tie my hair in its usual bun then go downstairs. Everything is the same until we get to the justice building where the ceremony is held. I walk in between my mother and father kind and we stand in the crowd. Marcus does a quick introduction and tells us how the ceremony will work. He does a speech and then calls the initiates up and they choose their job. We go in alphabetical order based on last names.
"Beatrice Prior," The way they call my name reminds me of the choosing ceremony. I write my name in the space for feeding the factionless, the leaders bow their head at me, congratulate me and I walk back. My father is a leader and he quickly winks at me. I smile and walk back to my mother. Christina picks feeding the factionless as well. Over the few days I've known her she has become my best friend and my only friend. I haven't seen Tobias since the walk.
The ceremony includes a special dish brought by each family. Everyone helps set up and everyone helps clean up. Christina and I hang out and talk while the festivities go on. She is a very happy person. "My test result was Dauntless and I was so sure I would pick it but... Something happened during the ceremony. I felt like something changed and I needed to go to Abnegation. I hadn't even thought of it as an option until my blood was about to drip and my hand lead itself to the stones." She tells me. "I enjoyed being here but I felt like I was supposed to find something. Gave up on that after initiation was almost over and I noticed how different I am compared to all the other Stiffs." She pauses. The other factions call us Stiffs and Christina still hasn't gotten used to calling us only Abnegation yet.
"You'll get the hang of it," Having a faction transfer as a friend is the best kind of friendship I could ask for. We see things differently and I love to learn her perspective of things versus mine. She smiles and continues, "Then as soon as I lost hope I met you, I feel like we were destined to meet. Even if I went to dauntless." Her comment shocks me. She changed her mind about Dauntless just like me. Were we destined o meet? If I went to Dauntless would Tobias pick that two years ago? "I was about to pick Dauntless, but then my brother..." I don't continue because I know Christina can connect the dots. She looks at me with sympathy. "So what was your result?" She asks. I can't tell her the truth so I just say, "Abnegation" "Wow I got dauntless and picked abnegation and you got abnegation and almost picked Dauntless. Life can be funny sometimes." I laugh a little. She's right.
We talk a little more until it's time to go. We help clean up and then wave goodbye. I'm glad fate brought us together. What would I do without her? She is also a former Candor so I can always get an honest opinion out of her.

Later on my mother and I are at home alone while my father finishes up at work. He comes home with an unreadable expression. "Are you alright Andrew?" My mother asks as she takes off his coat. "Yes, Natalie. I just heard some unfortunate news from Marcus." I feel many things at once. Confusion, hope, curiosity. "What is it?" I blurt out. "Tobias is not getting engaged anymore. The girl quit the faction." Not what I expected at all. How did he do that? "What? She left?" My mother asks. She glances at me and I give her the look. This is my time. "Yes, Elanor chose to be factionless rather than Abnegation." Her name is Elanor? "Well then," My mother says. She stands by our kitchen table thinking. My father makes his way to the sink to wash his hands. "Could you ask Marcus if he would be interested in anyone else at work tomorrow?" She asks. "Who are you thinking of? I don't want to suggest anyone. It's his son." My father replies. My mother and I look at each other. "Well...Could you invite him for dinner?" My father stares and my mother confused. "What are you trying to say, Natalie?" "I'm trying to say, our daughter and Marcus's son want to be arranged."
