A Protogen's Misadventures

Interference

The short man walked into the same large room, decorated with red carpets and “trophies”, with the same large expansive windows overlooking the desolate planet below.

“Hey there boss, I’m just coming here to tell you something,” the man said. The large chair swiveled around and faced the man. “What is it now, Germia?” questioned The Boss. “Well, we’ve located where the pod landed sir,” answered Germia. “Oh really? Would you care to show me?” said The Boss. “Of course sir, right this way,” said Germia. Germia started out of the room and The Boss quickly followed suit. Germia leads The Boss through the expansive hallways, each with windows to either look out at the planet, or the cold, dark depths of deep space. They walked down a couple flights of stairs and entered into a hallway which was significantly smaller than the main hallways. Germia stopped at the mission control room door. He fumbled around for his keycard until finally grabbing it and inserting it into the slot. The doors slid open with a “schhht” sound. The pair walked in and walked over to the main table which displayed an overview of Earth.

“Ok sir, let me just zoom in on where it is,” said Germia. The Boss just watched as the map zoomed in on the spot. “Alright, there it is,” said Germia. “This spot looks familiar,” said The Boss. “It does?” questioned Germia. “Yes, I believe when I scanned Earth as a potential mining planet, I noticed this particular area was different. Something about it made our satellites get the wrong image or topographical data, as if something was interfering with it. What is even more interesting is that whatever enters that area can no longer be tracked or seen using satellites or cameras,” said The Boss. “That is very interesting sir, but what does that have to do with our situation?” said Germia. “What this means is that we have no way of tracking EG-7351 through our satellites or hacking into cameras, which will make it significantly harder to find him,” said The Boss. “I see. Well if that is the case, we will have to send in scout teams to investigate and locate the prisoner, I can call to have some avai-” Germia gets cut off by The Boss. “No, I want to go there myself, get a closer look at this planet and that area, and confront him myself,” finished The Boss. “I understand. I will mobilize a team that will come with us and 2 backup teams. We leave in 30 minutes,” said Germia. “Okay, you do that,” said The Boss.

Germia hurriedly left the room, leaving The Boss stayed behind. He looked at the map. “We are coming for you...Evergreen.”

I slowly opened my eyes and noticed something was holding on to me. I momentarily freaked out before realising it was just Evergreen. We both seem to like cuddling a lot. I do like it a little more than I’ll care to admit. Thinking about just how warm he is, his soft fur against me, his big tail draped over me...I blushed a little bit. Maybe I did like it, a lot. I reached for my phone and checked the time. ‘8:40, still a little bit before work. Ugh I hate getting up early, I mean I love my job, but getting up is the hard part. I am not a morning person, nor do I like Mondays,’ I thought. I set my alarm for 9 and got back into position with Evergreen.

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

I groaned. Why do they have to make these alarm sounds so annoying? I fumble around for my phone until finally finding it and shutting that darn alarm off. I feel Evergreen stir beside and give a loud yawn. “Why are you getting up so early?” said Evergreen groggily. “I have work I have to go to,” I replied. “Oh, I see. Alright, well you have fun at work, I will stay here and get my beauty sleep,” he said. “You have fun with that,” I said. I got up and put on some more proper clothes. I then went over to the bathroom to brush my teeth. Once I brushed my teeth, I stepped out of the bathroom and out of the room and into the kitchen. I make myself a quick breakfast, as I had to get to work. I ate my breakfast and wished Evergreen a farewell. I closed the door behind me and locked it. I made my way down the stairs and towards my car. It was a newer model SUV, with about 540 horsepower. It was an alright car, could go offroad if I wanted to. Had a nice blue color to it, with a turbocharged engine. I hopped in and put the key in the ignition and turned it on. The car roared to life and was ready to roll. I backed out of my parking spot and started my way to my work.

I pulled into the employee parking lot and stopped the car and got out. I worked at this neat place called “Electronic Care”. Basically, what I did was fix things. I could fix anything, from computers, laptops, phones, and even TVs. I knew my way around electronics. For most people, it is never anything serious, just something that doesn’t work right or why it won’t turn on. I sat down at the front desk and waited for the customers. While I was waiting, my co-worker, Jared, came and sat down in the seat next to me. He had this crazy hair all the time. He also always wore the same jacket, no matter what weather. It was his thing. “Hey Jack, how you doing?” he said. “I’m doing alright, how are you doing?” I replied. “I’m doing great! Just got a girlfriend!” he said excitedly. “Congratulations man, who is she?” I questioned. “She is this wonderful person, I met her not too long ago here in this shop,” he said. “Oh so that is who you were talking to last week,” I said. “Yup, went on a date with her on Sunday. What about you? Anybody you’ve taken an interest to?” he said. I laugh nervously. “U-Uh, no, not yet,” I say. “That’s too bad man. By the time you are in a relationship, we’ll be colonizing Mars!” he jokes. He starts laughing and I laugh nervously.

The rest of the day goes off without a hitch, same old problems, nothing new, but I love helping people. As the last person leaves, I get up to check out and Jared wishes me a goodbye. I walk back over to my car and start it up. As I am driving back, I think about what Jared was talking about. Why did I get so nervous when he asked me if I was interested in anyone? Could it be...No, it couldn’t, could it? There was no denying the thought. It had been creeping up on me for a while now. Did I like Evergreen?
