A week later Valery sits in the kitchen of her mother's house, staring out the window. When Clark died, a part of her died with him. Of course, Valery is still being a hero to Metropolis for the sake of the city. Martha sits down at the table with Valery, sliding a cup of tea towards her. Valery looks at the cup and then to Martha, "Thanks, Ma." Martha nods, "I miss him too." Valery nods, "A part of me died with him that night...first dad, now Clark." Martha tucks a strand of hair behind Valery's ear. "My baby girl...at least I still have one of you..." Valery nods, "It should have been me, Clark had something to live for." "Baby, it shouldn't have been either of you." Valery sighs, "You know, I never told you exactly what happened that day, Ma." Martha looks at Valery, "The day Clark died?" Valery nods. "You don't have to tell me, dear." "I want to, I haven't talked to anyone about Clark's death, not even Lois and she's like a sister to me." Martha nods, "Alright, tell me what happened." Valery explains what happened that night, not leaving anything out, "The moment that Beast stabbed Clark in the chest...I felt it...and I let go of the spear too weak from the Kryptonite...I'm so sorry Ma, I shouldn't have let Clark kill the Beast alone." "Clark was very brave, he wouldn't have let you go after that monster on your own. You are-were the only thing he had left of a real family." Valery looks at Martha, "He's always been too overprotective, stubborn, and big-headed." Valery laughs as does Martha. "That sounds like your brother." "I love you, Ma." "I love you too, sweetheart. Drink your tea, then go home and get some sleep." Valery nods. Once Valery finishes her tea she gets up and hugs Martha, "I'll see you later, Ma." With that, Valery flies off.
Once Valery gets home, she draws herself a nice hot bath to try and relax. She closes her eyes, leaning her head back, and thinks. After an hour she gets out of the bath and gets dressed, she lays down in bed. She stares at the ceiling, before crying herself to sleep. She cries herself to sleep every night, it's become a ritual for her, every night since Clark died. A few hours later she jolts forward, with a scream. "No!!" Only to realise it was just another reoccurring nightmare, just like the crying, it too, had become a ritual. Unable to fall back asleep, she walks out to the balcony that overlooks the ocean, seeing the Dolphins and Whales frolicking about. She sighs, "Not a care in the world...no maniacs trying to kill you wonderful creatures of the deep blue." She stays outside until sunrise, having fallen asleep sometime during the night. She is shaken by someone, jolting up from her spot, "Fluffy kittens!" She yells, noticing Diana Prince on her balcony with a smile on her face. "Fluffy kittens, that sounds cute." Valery shrugs and goes inside, Diana following. "What are you doing here, Diana?" "I came to see how you're doing." "I'm fine, now if you'll excuse me, I'd like to be alone." Diana grabs Valery's hand, "Val-El if you ever need to talk-" Valery pulls her hand away from Diana's. "I don't need to talk."
