Sophie's POV
Lane and I sat on her porch, smoking a cigarette. Lane looked as awful as I did. Both of our eyes were puffy from crying. "You're really leavin' tomorrow?"
Lane took a shaky breath, tears filling her eyes, "yeah, guess so."
The front door opened and Darry came out with Steve, "can we talk?" Steve asked.
"I have nothing to say to you," Lane sneered.
Darry winced, like she had struck him. I almost felt bad for him, but he and Steve were separating us. They weren't giving us a chance to get better.
"C'mon Soph," Steve sat down next to me, "talk to me."
"What do ya want me to say? Oh Steve, thank you so much for making me sound so crazy that I have to go to a nut house," I said, my words dripping with sarcasm.
"You think we wanna do this?" Darry demanded harshly. "Do you any idea how dangerous what you're doing is? Lane, you could have died! A staph infection can kill you! Sophie, you're cutting awfully close to the huge artery that runs up your leg! You knick that and you would bleed out! So if you wanna be pissed at us, fine. I'd rather have pissed at me and live, than be your friend and plan your funeral!"
Lane and I stared at the ground. Finally, Lane flicked away her butt, "Sorry, Darry," her voice almost inaudible.
"I'm scared," I pulled my knees up to my chest. "I don't wanna be alone."
"I know, Sophie." Steve put his arm around me, "it's only 60 days and I'll come visit you. Shoot kid, we all will." Steve offered a small grin, "now let's stop moping and go do something fun. We planned a little send off party."
Lane's POV
Steve and Sophie went back into the house. "Darry, can I talk to you?"
"Of course, Laney." He sat back down on the step.
"I'm sorry," I felt tears pool in my eyes and wondered how I still had some, "but I don't wanna go away. It hurts so bad."
Darry took me in his lap. I know, I'm 14 and I'm curled up in my brother's lap, "Baby, I don't want you to go either, but I also know that I can't help you with this. This is outta my league. I love you and I know it probably don't seem like it right now, but I do."
I closed my eyes and leaned against my big brother's chest, "I love you too, Dare."
