Chapter 7: New Faces
Chase shot up immediately scanning the room. After a few minutes of his eyes adjusting to the dark room he realized he was no longer in City Hall. If the bed and all the medical supplies around him weren't a big enough hint, he was at the hospital. Upon further inspection he saw the pups, Seán, and Ryder all asleep in chairs next to his bed. Marshall and Skye however were a little closer together than the others. This made Chase smile. "Good for them" he thought. As he began to get up he noticed Everest laying down next to him. Trying not to wake her, he carefully shifted around and got out of bed. He went into the bathroom and splashed some water onto his face hoping that would ease his nerves faster. When he looked into the mirror above the sink he noticed a bandage rapped around his head. After inspecting the bandage he slowly remembered what had happened. He reached his paw to feel his head, wincing in pain when he felt the lump on the side. He then proceeded to take the bandage off, observing the cut on his head. As he was looking at the cut, something touched his back. On instinct, he immediately swung around and bared his teeth.
"Sorry, didn't mean to startle you. Glad you're awake. You took a nasty blow to the head" said Seán.
"That's alright, I've been through worse. I think" said Chase still only knowing hazy details of his past.
"Your friends and I came as soon as you were brought in," said Seán, "We were all worried about you. Everest the most. She wouldn't leave your side"
"You guys had nothing to worry about. Some rest was all I needed" replied Chase, "Anyway what time is it?"
"It's four in the morning. You've been out all day" said Seán.
"Geez, that hit really damaged me" said Chase looking back into the mirror at his cut, "Did the hostages get out safe?"
"Yeah, I got them out right before you were attacked. Other than a few cuts and bruises, they're fine"
"Ok good"
A sudden realization then hit him.
"Seán I have to tell you something important but we need to go somewhere else. I don't want any of the others knowing this" said Chase as him and Seán walked out into the hallway. Before Chase spoke he looked around making sure no one else was in earshot "I'm sorry, I just want the others knowing as little as possible about this situation. I would never forgive myself if one of them got hurt because of me. Anyway, I have information about who the attackers were. The one who talked to me seemed to be leading that operation. He was a bulldog, said his name was Brutus. I don't know him but he seemed to know a lot about me. That name ring any bells"
"Sadly, yes. Remember that group I told you about. Well, he's the one pulling the strings. There's no doubt that he pulled that stunt to get you there and meet you again. The guns they were demanding would have just been an added bonus. You have to stay away from him. He's dangerous" explained Seán.
Before Chase could respond a nurse interrupted him.
"Are you pups okay?" asked the nurse.
"Yeah we're fine. I just wanted to stretch my legs" said Chase.
"Okay, If you need anything just press the button on your bed" said the nurse as he walked away.
Once the nurse was out of hearing distance, Chase continued.
"Anyway, back to what we were talking about. Why is he so dangerous?"
"Like I said, he's the one in charge of that group and his main target is you. He'll go to any length to get you"
"But then why didn't he just kill me there. He had me on the ground completely helpless"
"I don't know. Maybe he was just toying with you. He may be crazy, but he's not stupid. He left you alive for a reason, and it's probably not a good one"
