We run into the woods, sun rays seeping through the tree. we run, and we run, and we run, until my feet could barely do their job. "We are going back to the hospital," Asher said clearly out of breath."What why?" I cough out, trying to keep my breath at a steady pace.
"I told my friends to meet us there at the front entrance with their car." I couldn't bring myself to respond, desperately gasping for air. I have never run this fast in my life. Every step, every movement I make, I feel my body fall deeper, and deeper, in agony.
Finally, after what feels like years, we make it to the hospital. I basically run into Asher as he stops short at the big glass doors. I fall to the floor, trying to catch my breath. "Are you alright?" Asher looks down on me, with concern melting into his face.
"Yes, I-I I just, I just need to sit for a second," I say in between breaths.
"They should be here any second." Asher sits beside me, but then abruptly stands back up and cursing under his breath.
"What's wrong?!"
"I forgot something inside. Stay right here and don't move an inch," he says with a tone I never thought would leave his mouth. I nod, and I also lie. As I see him running into the building, I shortly follow. What if they find me, and take me without Asher? That was the main thought that made me follow him. He goes the same route which took us to the roof. I watch carefully as he opened the creeky door, and unfortunately closed it behind him. I go to take a step to the door, but I make a loud noise with my feet instead. Asher quickly opens the door.
"Maya! I told you to stay downstairs!" We are both inside the room now.
"I'm sorry, I just wanted to make sure you were ok." I lied for the second time. He exhales, clearly upset.
"It's ok, thank you for caring."
"So you'er not ma-" Footsteps behind me cut me off. I'm confused, no one else is here, and it can't be Asher's since he is right in front of me. I don't dare to turn around. Instead, I look at Asher. He has a puzzled and scared look on his face. The curiosity got the best of me, and I slowly faced the other direction. The two strong men and my mother stared back at me.
"You really think you could get rid of me that easily?" My mom laughed. She was all bloody, and honestly, so were we.
"Come on, we have to go now!" Asher yells. He grabs my hand, and we both go through the same window we did the night before.
Once we were steady on the roof Asher whispers, "Maya, I have to tell you something."
Your tragic event, it-it was."
"It was what?"
"It was a plane, crash." I feel my breath stop.
"Wh-what?"
"You can't escape me this time!" My mom yelled while going through the window. I feel my hair whipping through the wind and fear running through my veins. I look at Asher and he looks back at me. He looks afraid, but at the same time, ready to embrace everything with me. He grabs my hand, and I nod my head. He jumps, and I fall with him. In the matter of seconds he grabs on to me.
"Go live your life!" Asher screams as if his voice would get lost in the wind if he hadn't.
"What! No!" I take one last look at him. He has tears in his eyes. He then smiles, and in a quick motion, he turns me over so his back faces the ground. The smile on his face was the last thing I could remember until everything went black.
"She's waking up!" While blinking out of unconsciousness, I feel the presence of 3 people next to me. When my eyes were finally fully open, I saw Rose looking down on me. As I came to my senses, I realized that I was in a moving car.
"Wh-what happened," I say, still not understanding what's going on.
"When Asher called me, and told me the plan, I drove straight to the hospital. When I arrived his friends were there in their car, hiding behind the trees. In the middle of us connecting, I saw- I saw you guys falling. So we picked you up, put you in their car, and now we are off to our new life up north!" Rose explained. The memory came back all at once."Here. We found this in your back pocket." Rose hands me a folded paper note. I could see seeping ink through the back, so I knew that there was something inside. Carefully, I opened it.
My dearest Maya. If you are reading this, that means something went wrong in my plan. I am so sorry. I should have explained all of this to you earlier, maybe then we both could have spent the rest of our lives together. To be honest, I would rather die than live every moment in agony because I didn't have the memory of you, and it looks like I got my wish. I was never one for a happy ending, for I know now that to be true. Just always remember, Maya, when you feel lonely in this world or when you doubt you are loved and no one can understand you, I always have from the moment I met you. I want you to know that it is ok to let me go. I know now that I can't be selfish with you Maya, moving on is a part of life. But I will always be here, between these words, where my love for you will last forever. It kills me to watch the tears form in your eyes when you read the last few words left of me. All I ask is for you to remember me, because I will forever remember you.
Even now, at 93, I still remember Asher Jones. How could I forget, he was the one who saved me, and will be forever, the love of my life.
