"Squad three and Truck eighty one, two fires in the same place. Hollywood Boulevard and tenth." the intercom called out and all firefighters raced to their designated fire trucks before racing to where their fires where. "two in the same place? that's odd." Cruz noted as he drove the truck of squad three.
Kelly nodded as he looked down at his phone, and was waiting for Meredith to answer his texts but she never did, the lieutenant had sent her five texts but she hadn't even read them. "have any of you heard from Meredith?"he called out but all responded with a "no."
"strange, i haven't heard from Sylvie either." Joe stated as he quickly glanced over at his lieutenant.
Both trucks waited until they were on scene to make any calls. "is that ambulance 61?" Tony questioned which made Kelly look up and look over to where his friend pointed at. "Meredith." he muttered as Cruz pulled up a few feet away from from the burning fire which engulfed ambulance 61.
"Matt! are you seeing this?" Kelly radioed over to his friend as everyone got out of their seats and raced over to the ambulance.
Kelly was the first one to see Sylvie sitting over Meredith doing chest compressions as Meredith laid unconscious. "Brett!" he yelled as he fell next to the blonde who was trying to stay doing compressions as well as wiping her tears away.
"what the hell happened?" Kelly asked the paramedic. "a ca-car, it drove into us... Meredith got on top of me to cover me." she cried as she continued CPR on her best friend.
Gabby came over to take over from the injured paramedic as she was in no shape to treat the unconscious female. "i'll take over." the brunette placed her hand on Sylvie's shoulder. "get checked out." she pressed on as she nodded at Matt to take her to another set of paramedics.
The firefighter nee paramedic continued chest compressions as she bent down to listen to Meredith's chest sounds. "i think she has a collapsed lung." she muttered as she looked over at Kelly who nodded, "get here on a stretcher!"he cried out as he stood up.
"why aren't you fighting this fire?" the voice of Chief Boden roared as he walked around the two fire trucks to question all of his firefighters. "Matt! Kelly." he yelled but he stopped when he saw Sylvie being treated by some paramedics and Meredith unconscious with Gabby over her.
"what the hell happened here?" he asked.
Matt explained what Sylvie told him as he watched their chief radio in for two more fire trucks from other companies. "get her to a god damn hospital!" he yelled as Meredith was transferred to a stretcher and placed into the ambulance. "go with her Kelly." Wallace nodded at Kelly who ran into the ambulance and it drove off.
Fifteen hours later. "Kelly? you have to go home buddy." he looked up to see his chief standing in front of him with his fellow firefighters standing beside him. "i-i can't leave her." he muttered as he straightened up in the uncomfortable hospital chair. "we understand but you have to go home sooner or later." Otis muttered as he took the risk and stepped closer to the lieutenant before he rubbed his shoulder.
Kelly had stayed in the same spot for another two hours after his friends left him in the waiting room. "Kelly?"he glanced up from his phone to see his friend Anna who's a nurse. "are you here for Meredith?" she asked the lieutenant who nodded in response. "yeah." he rubbed his forehead as he stood up.
"she's out of surgery." she smiled at the male. "can i see her?" he asked and Anna nodded.
Anna led Kelly up to the ICU ward where Meredith was laying there unconscious with wires coming out of her body. "she's going to be okay." the nurse rubbed his shoulder as he walked into the room and over to his friend who held his heart.
"hey Meredith, i'm here." he sat next to her, and grabbed her pale hand.
Kelly stayed with the blonde for a few more hours with the unconscious paramedic when he heard a knock on the door, Kelly looked up to see Conor standing there in the doorway. "how's she doing?"the doctor asked as he stepped closer to the lieutenant.
"Anna said she'll be out for a few more hours." he muttered as he looked over at the doctor.
Four hours later. Kelly was forced out of the hospital by his friend April as he needed a shower and she insisted that Meredith wouldn't wake up for a while but she would call when she did wake up. "hey." Otis came out of his room when he saw that Kelly was back.
"how is she?"he asked. "still unconscious." the lieutenant sat on the sofa.
Otis joined his friend on the sofa but they sat in silence, and the firefighter would be here when his friend decided it was time to speak about his feelings. Everyone knew that he had never been good at sharing his emotions expect with Shay but when she passed, he went down hill.
But that all changed when Meredith Wright came through them double doors.
"kelly? kelly! your phone is ringing." Otis shook the lieutenant out of his trance as he was holding the phone belonging to Kelly Severide. "It's April." he muttered as he answered the phone and put it on loudspeaker.
"she's awake." and Kelly instantly stood up alongside Otis. "thank you." he said goodbye to the nurse before hanging up and heading to the hospital.
It took Kelly fifteen minutes to reach the hospital and the room that was housing Meredith. "Mer." he smiled as she was sitting up, flicking through the channels on the TV. "Kelly." she gushed out as she placed down the remote, and mentioned for the lieutenant to come closer.
"how are you feeling?" he sat next to her on the leather chair which was in the same place he left it. "perfectly fine - a collapsed lung isn't a big deal." she laughed as she ran her hand through her blonde hair.
Kelly and Meredith spoke for hours until the dinner service came through the door. "hi Meredith." he smiled as he handed the off duty paramedic her food which was fish and chips. "thank you Dave." she placed the plastic plate on her lap. "it smells somewhat good." Kelly joked as she lifted the top off.
It rolled over to seven in the evening which meant that visiting hours were over, and that also meant that Kelly had to leave Meredith for the night. "Kelly, you have to go." the paramedic smiled at her friend who refused to leave her side. "you can come see me after shift tomorrow." she rubbed his hand, and he finally agreed to leave.
The lieutenant arrived home, and he saw that Otis was standing over the stove stirring something in a pot. "hey man, i'm just making stir fray." he smiled over at his friend who took off his coat before he walked over to Otis.
What happened next shocked the firefighter.
Kelly started crying.
"she's fine man." he took the lieutenant in his arms before rubbing his back. "but what if she wasn't? what if Sylvie was unconscious too."he left his arms, but continued to stare at his friend.
Otis sighed as he bit his lip, he was thinking what to say.
"but she wasn't - she saved her."
