Meredith stood behind Gaby in the line of the local coffee shop, as they waited to be served. "hi." The EMT looked up to see the person calling her over. "oh sorry." she smiled as she placed her phone in her jacket.
"Can i get a large hot chocolate with peppermint syrup please." she told the order to the barista who put it through the till. "that will be $5." The barista told Meredith the amount.
Meredith dove through her purse to get to her money, "it's on me." she looked up to see a handsome handing the money to the barista.
"oh you didn't have to." the blonde refused.
The unknown man shook his head, "i know how it feels to be a first responder." he smiled and Meredith looked confused but he pointed to her jacket which said "Firehouse House 51 - EMT" on it. "oh." she laughed.
"I'm Carter." he introduced himself as the pair moved down the line to wait for their drinks. "Meredith." she smiled as the pair shook hands. "are you a first responder then?" she asked and Carter nodded.
"i'm a detective." he told her as the pair grabbed their drinks and walked out of the coffee shop. "Meredith! we have to go." The female looked over to see Gaby standing over by her car before turning back to Carter.
Carter looked down at Meredith, "how about i take you to dinner?" he shocked Meredith. "oh uhm sure." she rambled as she bit her lip. "give me your number and you can text me when you're off shift." Carter laughed at how Meredith was acting around him.
Meredith told Carter her number before saying goodbye to each other, Meredith walked over to her friend. "dinner?" Gaby smirked as the pair drove to the firehouse. "it's one harmless dinner." she defended her actions.
Gaby parked her car as the two got out, they were met with Casey and Kelly. "it is only one date! i might not like him." Meredith rolled her eyes as Gaby continued to tease her. "shut up." she hissed as she slammed the door shut.
Meredith left the trio on the pavement as she left to go into the firehouse. "date huh?" Kelly glanced over to Gaby who nodded. "Name's Carter, i think." Gaby shrugged as they entered the firehouse to see Meredith sitting next to Cruz and Moose.
"hey M." she looked up to see Kelly staring down at her, but Meredith gave no response as she knew that Gaby told him about the date and he would continue the teasing. "Meredith?" he called her name again but to no avail, no answer came.
Meredith finished her hot chocolate, "hey, i'll be back." she smiled over at the two males she was sitting with to throw her cup in the bin. Meredith stood up before grabbing her cup and walking over to the bin but she got pulled to the side.

"can i help you, lieutenant?" she crossed her arms over her chest as she lifted her head up to look in the eyes of Kelly. "why are you ignoring me?" he asked and he wasn't going to accept silence as an answer. "because i don't want to speak to you?" she responded, like it was an effort.
