It had been now over a week since the death of the fellow firefighter's death. Otis was missed that was for sure. Each of the firefighters and paramedics that walked through the doors of Firehouse 51 could feel the sadness of which everyone felt.

Meredith had started her shift, alongside Sylvie as the two paramedics but Meredith kept going back to that she could of done more for her friend.

Kelly had been distant for the past week but Meredith hadn't taken it personally as this is how he coped when something bad has happened. The blonde hoped that he was going to show for his shift.

Meredith glanced over to his picture which they had put in the main hallway so that everyone could see him as they walked past and she smiled at the memories the two had shared.

Three months ago

Meredith was taking inventory of the ambulance to make sure they were all topped when she heard a bang on the side of the rig. "you trying to kill me!" she laughed as she placed her clipboard down, and to investigate on who nearly gave her a heart attack.

When she was about to jump down, Otis came around the rig and scared her. "my god!" she slapped his chest as his booming laugh could be heard throughout the firehouse. His laughter carried on for a few minutes which made the others come out to investigate.

"you trying to kill my girl?" Sylvie asked as she stepped over to stand next to Meredith.
"maybe." Otis winked as his laughing died down.

"just wanted to try the def-" his sentence was cut off with the intercom going off. "next time!" Otis pointed his finger towards Meredith. "i'm sooo scared." she shivered as she got into the passenger seat.

Present time

Meredith smiled as she looked down to see the bracelet he had gotten her, alongside Gaby and Matt for her birthday. "i miss you." she rubbed it but she took in a deep breath before getting up, and grabbing herself a cup of coffee.

The blonde was joined by Matt who gave her shoulder a small rub as he walked around her. "you okay?" the male asked, as he knew how close the two were. "i'm handling it." she gave him a weak smile but the two were surprised...

Kelly Severide had turned up for his shift.

"go speak to him." Matt pushed Meredith to go speak to her boyfriend.

Meredith had no clue on what to say since Kelly hadn't been home for the week, so she didn't know how was he doing. The paramedic knocked on his door which then she heard a 'come in' and she pushed the door open to see Kelly sitting on his desk.

"hey." she whispered as she closed the door behind her.
"hi." he muttered.

The blonde sat on his bed, and took a look at him. Kelly had a beard growing, and his hair was growing out. "are you okay?" she finally asked after a few minutes but it felt like a lifetime.

"what do you think?" he took a look at her, and snapped when her eyes looked down.
"i'm sorry." she rubbed her bare arms.

Meredith sucked in a breath, and noticed that Kelly had put up a picture of him and Otis on his wall. "i did always love that picture." she muttered as she stood up to look at it better.

"yeah me too." he responded as he stood behind her.

"where have you been staying?" she asked as she wanted to know if he was safe.

Kelly took in a breath, "with Kidd, she has a spare bedroom." he told her and Meredith closed her eyes but she wasn't going to snap at him due to how high both emotions were.

"okay." she nodded before turning to look at him before leaving the office.

Meredith went back to the squad room, and covered her eyes with her hands but it was quickly interrupted with the intercom going off. "ambo 61. Two children knocked off their bikes." the lady said as the address was being given.

Kelly watched his girlfriend speed walk to the ambo, and jump into the driver seat and sighed as the ambulance speed out of the firehouse. "hey." he turned around to see Kidd standing there.

"thank you for letting me stay at yours. I couldn't been there with Meredith... every time i looked at her, i kept seeing Otis." he said to Kidd but the two didn't know that Gaby was standing there listening in.

Over in town, the ambulance arrived on scene as police was taping it off. "i'll take the girl." Meredith told Sylvie, and the two split up.  Meredith got on her knees to look at the girl, "hi, i'm Meredith. I'm one of the paramedics." she smiled at the young girl.

"i'm... Becky." the girl was able to get her name out but it was breathless.

"can i listen to your chest?" she asked Becky, and the girl nodded. Meredith listened to her chest, and she sighed as Becky had a punctured lung. "i have a tension pneumothorax." she called out to Sylvie. "i have to decompress." she added on.

"hey Becky, i'm going to stick a needle into your hand. It'll be a slight scratch but then ill give you medicine to make you feel better." Meredith told Becky as she put in the needle, and gave a small dosage of morphine.

Meredith heard Sylvie radioing for another ambulance, and Meredith smiled at Becky. "how's your pain now?" she asked and Becky gave a number 6 which meant the morphine was working.

The other crew turned up and took over the care of the young boy which meant Sylvie could help Meredith. "i'm going to decompress now." she told the blonde as Sylvie handed her the needle.

Meredith felt between her ribs before she found the right location to press the needle. Meredith counted down from three and she pressed the needle in, and she pulled the small tube out and Becky's chest now evenly went up and down.

"does your breathing feel better now?" she asked and Becky said yes.

Sylvie got the back board and spinal collar ready to be put on Becky. "we are going to the hospital now but you are going to meet mummy there." she told the young girl as they loaded her into the ambulance.

Meredith got into the rig and started it up, "we're good back here." Sylvie told her, and they made the journey to Med.

The pair handed her off to Will and Natalie while giving them the details. "thank you guys." Will smiled at the two, and the paramedics were back on their way to the firehouse.

The rig was parked back up, and two walked back into the squad room. "hey." Meredith waved to everyone but she ignored the smile that Kelly sent her way as she spoke to the girls... being Gaby and Sylvie.

"can we talk?" her conversation was cut off when Kelly walked over to her.
"yeah." she muttered as the two walked out to where the trucks and rig were.

Kelly looked at her while Meredith leant up against the truck. "speak." the blonde told him.

"i'm sorry for not being home." he started off. "i needed time alone." he continued but was cut off, "with Stella?" she asked but scoffed when he didn't respond. "every time i looked at you, you reminded me of Otis due to his closeness to the girl.

Meredith stared at him before going over to him and giving him a hug. "you should of told me that instead of running off." she whispered in his neck.

"i'm sorry." he looked up and gave her a small kiss.

"me too." she whispered.
