Part 4
Izuka, Keisaku and Mirai all gathered around the defeated exo-body. They were now going to take the pilot and question him about the true purpose of the suits. But once they opened the capsule, it was seen to be empty. The suit had been running on its own. Izuka was the first to react.
"What the fuck!? I bust my ass trying not to kill the pilot, but there isn't one!" He kicked the empty suit with all his might, creating a painful noise in his foot.
"We'll have the clean-up team take the remaining suits back so that the higher ups can determine what these are. We've been told to dispose of this one on our own." Keisaku said whilst adjusting a knob on his headphone. No only did they enhance his hearing, they also allowed him to receive radio signals of certain frequencies.
Meanwhile, Mirai was looking closely at the empty cockpit. "?" She noticed something odd, so she grabbed it. It was a camera. But it was not a public camera. This camera was a piece of underground technology that could capture the entire scene around it using every frequency of the electromagnetic spectrum, without harm being caused by those with higher frequencies. She could draw one conclusion.
"Someone was watching us."
"? Why?" Izuka asked.
"Probably to see how we operate. Not even the higher ups know how we do things on requests."
"Un. If someone was watching us, then that's means we should inform the higher ups that someone on the outside is aware of our existence." Keisaku, who had finished fiddling with his headphones, was now sitting on top of the suit. "We won't get any information out of that. The screen it was beaming to could be on the other side of the world, and we have no way to trace it."
"Well, given how this went, we can guess that we'll get anther visit at some point." Mirai playfully tapped the spherical camera with a knife.
"Keisaku," Izuka started, "I don't think we can safely call this an attack from outside. Looking at the advanced technology used in the suits, it could be an attack from inside." His tone was serious, and Keisaku merely nodded in response. Mirai, however, became confused.
"But that doesn't make sense. If it was an attack from inside, then surely they would watch Unit ENIGMA. We're just second ranked next to them."
"We can assume that the other units have been observed, and we may not be the first to notice. Each unit operates differently and, depending on the scale of the next attack, they may need to know all of our attack patterns and how we think." Izuka grabbed the spherical camera and tossed it to Keisaku. "Well, I may just be over-thinking it." His serious tone was now gone, and he was back to his normal self.
Keisaku effortlessly crushed the camera underfoot, stopping both the recording and the transmission.
"So, what do we plan to do about this?" Keisaku stretched out his arms and arched his back.
"We do nothing. We know next to nothing. Besides, this sounds fun! I want to see how this plays out." The other two nodded. Being the hidden law of the world was boring when they had an obvious technological advantage. An opportunity like this was something they deeply craved. "At the very most, I'll go speak with Haruke tomorrow-"
"Eh!? That creepy guy from ENIGMA!? Why!? Not even his own unit can handle him!"
"He and I get along. He's my only connection to ENIGMA, unless you two have connections with Yuriko or Tatsuro?" They both remained silent. Out of Unit ENIGMA, Yuriko was the most normal, but still weird by the standards of other people.
"Actually-" Keisaku began to speak up, "I'm acquainted with Tatsuro. He and I have spoken on a few occasions."
"Eh!?" Mirai, again, made a strange noise after hearing that her own comrades were friends with such strange people.
"This is good. If this was an attack from inside, then whoever is behind this will suppress the information yielded from examination of the suits, but," Izuka gestured to the damaged suit beside him, "we have a suit at our disposal. We could have Tatsuro take a look, then we can decide what to do."
"And where do we keep this giant suit? If we don't want the higher ups to notice, we can't take it back with us." Mirai said.
"We leave it here. The public is unlikely to enter, and if we hide it under a tarp and call it a pile of crates that were damaged, then the clean-up team won't ask questions." Without needing an order, Mirai revealed a small device that looked similar to a stapler. She used it on the suit, then the suit vanished. She had inserted a chip into its body, enabling her to teleport it.
Keisaku put his hand on Izuka's shoulder.
"We'll head back. You stay and make sure the clean-up crew don't ask questions."
"Understood." Izuka replied obediently. Mirai and Keisaku walked off in different directions. They were clearly going off to do their own stuff, but that did not bother Izuka. All he wanted to do was leave and tend to his own personal business.
