"You're turn"
"No it's your's"
"He's your son"
"Our Son, and I got the last one!"
"And I pushed him out through a VERY small hole"

I signed in defeat, knowing I wasn't going to win this argument. I threw off the covers that were covering me and my exhausted wife and trudged over to the bassinet next to the window to tend to my son.

Derek Bailey Shepard was born about a month ago at a healthy 7.1 lb, and I'm not sure Meredith and I have slept since we brought him home. His favourite pastimes are crying, eating and pretty much nothing else. The girls were so much easier- even I can admit that. Still, I love every waking minute I get to spend with my boy, and I often wonder if my father felt the same way, getting up early to tend to me as a baby.

"Hey buddy!" I said as I lifted him out of the bassinet and into my arms. His face brightened up when he saw me and his cries died down to a quiet whimpering.

"Does somebody have a stinky diaper?" I cooed as I lifted him up and sniffed his tiny toosh.

"YEP That's a stinky diaper alright!" I said as I lay him down on the changing table.

"You know you look just like your mama" I began, as I threw his dirty diaper in the bin on the floor next to me, and grabbed a wipe.
"You've both got the same gorgeous blonde hair, though yours is thick and curly like mine. You've got your mama's adorable button nose, and when you smile I know it's gonna be just like her's too" The baby had stopped crying now, and was watching me intently as I spoke.
I grabbed the talc powder before continuing.

"You know buddy, mama's smile is the most beautiful thing in the world, it's like the world stopps turning and everything i was ever unsure about suddenly makes sense when I see her. But mama's smile isn't the only beautiful thing about her though"
I had finished changing him at this point, and cradled him as I went to sit in the rocking chair we'd temporarily moved to our room. Bailey seemed content just listening to me speak

"Mama's eyes are gorgeous too, they're emerald green and I get lost in them so easily, they sparkle, like your sisters' hair clips and if you look closely enough, you can see tiny little flecks of gold. I love mama's nose too; It's so incredibly adorable and tiny, just like yours. When mama's drunk or off her rocker on morphine, she does this little scrunch which makes my heart melt-"
Bailey chose this moment to scrunch his nose up, as though he could understand what I was saying. My heart swelled so much I thought it might explode- He looked so much like the love of my life.
"Yes buddy exactly! You're just like your mama!" He raised his little hand up to wave it around.

"Everything about mama is perfect isnt it buddy? You know a lotta people are gonna want to kiss her but little man that's where you need to help me out Okay? You gotta help me protect mama and your sisters from other boys. We're gonna be the only boys they like aren't we? You're gonna help me keep them safe?"
He let out a gurgle at this and waved his hands about some more. I took this as him saying yes because it was so goddamn cute.

"Starting early?" Came the much more rested and slightlt teary of my gorgeous wife. The sunlight caught the natural highlights of her hair which framed her face like a halo, she was a goddess and I was so incredibly lucky to have her.
