"So... How does this work, Derek?" I asked as we walked down the hall to the twins' classroom, hand in hand.

"Hmm, it's simple really. We just sit there and listen to someone else admit that our daughters are the smartest girls ever." Derek laughed and smirked at me

"Well, I wouldn't know." I giggled

"What?" Derek stopped and turned so that we were both facing each other. He took both of my hands in his. "Ellis never had conferences for you?"

I snorted in disgust and rolled my eyes. "She went to one in kindergarten. Out in Boston. The teacher said I was quiet and didn't play much sometimes. This was three months after my mother tried to kill herself."

Derek gasped in shock, shaking his head. "What did Ellis say?"

"That the teacher was wasting her time and if she couldn't make me be extraordinary, then someone else would."

"What?!" Derek almost shouted, Anger filling his veins and heat rising in his chest.

"Funny, that was my favorite teacher. She would always hug us three times a day. Once when we got there, once after nap and then right before we went home." I smiled at the memory

"That's sweet. I don't think we have to worry about the twins." Derek said as he moved to open the door.

"Me neither." I finished as we walked inside.

"Mama! Daddy! We're over here!" Lexie called when she saw us standing in the front of class. She was in the back of the class, holding Maddie's hand. Both are wearing handmade cardboard hats with paper hearts glued all over.

"Hi Lex, Hi Mads!" I beamed as Derek and I walk back to them. I bent down to hug Maddie and smiled when I felt her sink into my arms.

"Hey, Princess." Derek cooed next and lifted Lexie up high, her pink converse covered feet dangling in the air.

"Daddy!" She giggled as her pink "Daddy's Princess" shirt with a big, sparkly, red heart got wrinkled when he hugged her. "Are you done working?"

"Yep Lex, we came for the rest of your party and then we have a conference with your teacher." Derek explained

"Huh?"

"A conference is a meeting to talk about how you are doing in school." Derek smiled

"Oh, why?" Lex looked up at him while holding his hand.

"Just so we know things and make sure everything is going well." Derek replied.

"Not bad?" Lexie scrunched her nose like me as she looked at us.
