I roared in anger as I dug my blades deep into the titan's nape. I wiped titan blood from my cheek, smiling proudly at the kill. That was my eighth kill and it was still the first time I'd ever engaged in combat with any titans. I squeezed the trigger on my maneuver gear and dug a hook into the wall the moment I saw another titan. This one was a around a thirteen-meter; my biggest target so far. A furious glare returned to my gaze when I looked at its disgusting, disproportionate body moping around the downtown area of Trost. Spinning through the air, I extended my swords and opted to cut off the beast's arms first, or it might catch me if I tried cutting its nape.
I shifted my weight and swung to the left, flying towards the front of the titan. Quickly, I shot a wire into its inner elbow and pulled the trigger, shooting myself towards it. I extended my swords and leaned to the side, letting them split the creature's arm easily while I flew behind it. As I fell, I used momentum and my ODM gear to latch on to the opposite elbow, flipping in the air as I zipped towards the titan's arm.
The last arm hit the pavement and I chuckled quietly under my breath. It felt absolutely incredible to hurt those who had done so much to hurt me and my loved ones.
I decided to have more fun, as this was one of the last titans in Trost, and I could hardly wait to join the Scouts and get outside of the walls myself. I spun completely around, locking my gear to a nearby tower in the opposite direction of the titan, whom I was now behind. Before it had the change to turn around I stuck my arm behind me and attached a wire to its nape, flipping upside down to face the titan. I swung my blades as I shot towards it, praying my trick would succeed.
It did.
The titan crashed to the ground and left my hair stained red with its filthy blood. I gagged and wiped some of it from my forehead as the body rotted away on the street below. I couldn't help but smile again as I soared over the rooftops, bouncing every now and then off of the taller buildings. Less than five streets over, another, shorter titan appeared. This one was probably only a four-meter. I passed over it before flipping backwards again and shooting towards it, attaching a hook to its nape in the process. With a single movement, I dispatched the titan swiftly.
I landed on the ground, slightly annoyed that there were no more titans to kill, and jumped when I saw a woman rushing towards me. She wore a Scouts cape and goggle-glasses as well as ODM gear. Longish brown bangs that hung around the sides of her face and bounced as she scrambled towards me. I saluted, as she must've been a higher rank than I was, being in the Survey Corps and all.
"You're incredible!" she said, grabbing my shoulders, "You're a cadet?" she them remarked, seeing the badge on my shoulder.
"Yes, ma'am," I responded, smiling blushing a little at the compliment, "and thank you."
"My name is Hanji Zoë. I'm a section commander for the Scouts," she grinned, "do you mind coming with me to make sure there aren't any more titans in the district?" I was still astounded and unsure how to act around a real section commander. Unable to speak due to my excitement, I simply nodded and followed her into the air. "That backflip move is amazing!" she commented as we turned a corner, "Where did you learn it?"
"I—uh," I stammered anxiously, "I sorta just came up with it?"
"Just now?"
"Yeah—I mean yes ma'am!" I quickly corrected myself, praying I hadn't destroyed my reputation.
"You're really something," she shook her head happily, "I'm so sorry! I forgot to ask your name!"
"Y/N L/N, Commander," I said, trying to regain my confidence.
"Hanji is fine," she waved her hands at me, "and I expected your name to be Ackermann!" I cocked my head to the side.
"I'm not sure I understand," I replied carefully. Hanji said I'd certainly understand shortly, when she brought me to meet Levi. "Who's Levi? Sorry, I don't know a lot about the Scouts, even though I want to join them," I murmured the last part under my breath but Hanji heard it. She grabbed my shoulder and pulled me down to a rooftop with wide eyes.
"You don't want to join the Military Police?" she asked, astonished.
"I don't understand the point of allowing the top ten cadets to join the Police. It's like the better you are at killing titans, the farther away from them you get to be. Not that I'd want to be far away from them in the first place," I said, forgetting entirely that I was speaking to a government official, "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to say that—"
To my surprise, Hanji just got happier, "You want to be near titans?" she was so incredibly excited that it was infecting me, too.
"Yeah," I chuckled, rubbing the back of my neck, "but that's just so I can kill them all." Hanji laughed again and jerked her head, signaling for us to continue on our mission. Or, rather, I thought we were to continue on our mission, but she ended up leading me to a group of people, all wearing dark green cloaks over their uniforms and gear.
We landed a few meters from the group, and Hanji grabbed my arm when we did, pulling me towards them.
"Look what the cat dragged in," a short, black-haired man commented.
"Levi, that's mean," Hanji said, glaring at him.
So this was Levi.
"Y/N, this is Miche, Moblit, and Captain Levi," Hanji introduced me to everyone. I saluted and jumped when the man named Miche leaned close to my hair which was finally no longer scarlet. I sucked in a huge breath of air, startled, but Hanji reassured me that Miche smelled everyone and everything, and not to worry.
"O-oh okay then."
"I need to talk to you later about this cadet," Hanji turned to Levi once Miche had backed off and nodded slightly, "She's incredible!" The captain scoffed.
"I'm sure," he said sarcastically.
"Really, she is! And she wants to join the Scouts!" Levi raised an eyebrow at this, before readying his maneuver gear.
"We don't have time for idle conversation. Let's go." he said, shooting a wire to a half-demolished house, "And Hanji," he added before taking off, "you can bring the cadet, but she's your responsibility."
Hanji nodded excitedly and signaled for the rest of us to follow her after Levi.
As we flew toward Wall Rose, my mind wandered back to Eren. He'd already plugged the hole in the wall with that huge boulder and was now likely atop the wall, probably being questioned or getting yelled at for saving humanity, just because he turned into a titan. I picked up a little speed, knowing he didn't deserve it and wanting to get there more quickly. Of course, the thought never crossed my mind he wasn't even a human until just now. I closed my eyes, trying to rid myself of the notion. I had my qualms about Eren's titan power, like how it could possibly be activated so easily, but I hadn't worried about his actual humanity up until a few moments ago. I shook my head and told myself he was a human so I wouldn't have to think of him as the same filthy creatures that destroyed almost everything I loved. Also, I'd never fall for a titan.
What.
What did I just think.
Why did I—
"Y/N!" Hanji called out to me, yanking me back to reality, "You're in the same cadet corps as Eren right? The 104th?" I nodded, still shaken by my inner thoughts, "Great! She can help us out!"
"I'm not experimenting on my friend," I said angrily, ignoring the fact that she was my superior by almost as many ranks as possible, "His power is amazing, but I want to think of him as my friend, not as a weapon for humanity."
Hanji smiled, "I understand your concern. I promise we won't do any experiments without his consent." I let out a sigh of relief and hastily apologized again for being so rude as we neared the wall.
The moment my feet touched the wall, I searched for Eren, Armin, and Mikasa to see if they were okay. I knew Connie, Jean, and the others were safe, but I had no idea what type of situation Eren and co. were in.
I found them a few meters away from the rest of the people, speaking to what appeared to be a random Garrison soldier. I sprinted to them, feeling my eyes water a little as I grabbed Eren and enveloped him in a hug. I didn't realize I'd been so upset, but the excitement had probably smothered all of my other emotions. He hugged me back, putting his hand on the back of my head. I felt my cheeks get hot, and quickly jumped to hug Mikasa and hide my face.
"You and your ridiculous plans, Armin," I said, laughing as punching the blonde's arm. I might've punched it a little too hard, as his smile flickered for a second, "If it was based on strategy and knowledge, you'd have taken every top-ten place in the 104th," I joked, still barely able to believe we'd all managed to pull something like that off.
"Hey, Y/N!" I heard Hanji call from down the wall.
I jumped up and hurried towards her, meeting up with Levi and the others in their group. She put her arm around my shoulders proudly, "As of tomorrow," she said, "you'll be sticking with me in the Survey Corps." I grinned, but she wasn't finished yet. She leaned down close to my face and murmured into my ear happily, "and then eventually the Levi squad, so you can kill all those titans, but first its better for you to stay with me," she leaned back and spoke to everyone again, "so she's mine for now!"
"You can have her," Miche said, "she reeks of hatred." I jumped at his rude comment, but tried to seem as though I didn't notice because he was far superior to me.
"My Y/N?" Hanji rolled her eyes, "Nope, I'm pretty sure that's determination." I couldn't help but smile, happy to have someone act like my mom after so many years without mine thanks to the excuses for living things that stole her from me.—
I spent a week with Hanji, letting her teach me stuff about titans that I didn't get to learn in school when one day she decided that it was time I had some fun in the Survey Corps. I'd told her I was already having fun, which made her jump into the air with happiness, but she still took me out on a mission. We were going to capture to titans, and she had to repeatedly tell me not to kill them.
"I won't, I won't," I said. Miche had eyed me suspiciously, and Hanji smacked his arm.—
"What should I name them?" Hanji asked thoughtfully, staring at the two titans who lay smiling stupidly at us. I fought the urge to rip their eyes out, but calmed down once I remembered that Hanji said I could help do the pain testing.
I thought for a moment, trying to come up with an ugly name for an ugly beast.
"One of them could be Beane," I said, trying not to laugh at the crude suggestion.
"I love it!" Hanji hugged me excitedly. I was taken aback by her liking it, but just went along with the act to see what she'd do. She let go before I had the chance to hug her back.
"Sawney fits the ug— yellow one, I think," I added, tripping over my words trying not to insult the foul creature. Hanji grinned and turned to her titans.
"Perfect."
I snorted, slapping my hand over my mouth when she turned to see what I was laughing at. "Oh, c'mon I'm not stupid, I know those are funny names," she shoved me jokingly, "but they're cute."
"Sure they are," I laughed. I was warming up to Hanji, and I really appreciated how she treated me.
