I twisted around under the thin blanket that barely covered me. I was shorter than most and it was incredibly uncomfortable, so I'm sure it was much worse for those like the tall brunette I'd seen earlier with the nice blonde girl who helped Sasha when she had to run laps. I knew Braus would get into trouble for stealing a potato and then eating it at such a disrespectful time, but I still felt sorry for her. I had planned on speaking to her when she returned from running, but I decided to let her sleep, considering I'd want her to do the same for me.

I stared up at the bottom of the bunk above me, where the girl in question slept. A shiver ran down my spine as I thought of how quickly anyone in this room could lose their lives. It was inevitable that at least some of them would die early, but it made me uneasy to think that there was no telling when or who it would be.

Suddenly, a ponytail and a pair of bangs appeared out of the corner of my eye, hanging from the bunk above. I turned to see Braus hanging her head upside down from her bunk to see me. My eyes widened and I laughed quietly, surprised to see her awake.

"How are you awake?" I remarked.

"Do you have any food?" she asked, "I'm starving."

As if on cue, my own stomach grumbled.

"If I had food it would be gone already," I sighed as she frowned. Slowly, a smile crept onto her face and I could sense her air of mischief. "Uh oh," I muttered jokingly.

"I know a place that has food," Sasha exclaimed while keeping her voice at a whisper.
"Yeah," I chuckled, "the mess hall."

"Exactly!" to my surprise, she swung around the bar of her bung and landed on the floor in front of my bed, "Let's go, but you better be quiet." I stared at her for a moment, trying to process what was happening.

Does she seriously want to go into the mess hall NOW?

And she wants us to steal food at almost one in the morning?

Honestly, that sounds kind of fun...

I laughed again and sat up on my bed, rubbing my head. "Of course I'll be quiet."

Braus and I crept to the screen door and down the steps of the barracks to the porch outside of the mess hall. She walked ahead of me, so she was the one to check that the building was empty before we went into the kitchen.

"Where's the food..." Sasha drooled, searching for the pantry. I scanned the counters and cabinets of the huge kitchen when I noticed a teacup sitting on the counter. I remembered why I had come. Not for food, and not for fun. I came for revenge. I came so that my family wouldn't have to die for n—

"YN GET OVER HERE AND LOOK WHAT I FOUND!!" Sasha whisper screamed. Excited by my hunger and need for fun, I stumbled around the dark kitchen to Sasha, who stood frozen in front of what appeared to be the pantry. I stood next to her and followed her finger to a pile of meat in bags on a shelf.

"What?" I asked, "is it special or some— TITAN MEAT?? NO WAY!!" I exclaimed, reading the meat's label.

"This is ludicrous! Unfathomable! Astonishing!" Sasha whispered admiringly, "What should we do with it?" When I didn't answer immediately, her eyes narrowed. "You're not thinking of just ignoring it, are you?" she threatened.

"Oh, of course not!" I held up my hands in defense. In truth, I was annoyed with myself for becoming so focused on a plan to steal titan meat over thinking of my family.

Oh, come on, YN. It's titan meat. Food in general gets a free pass.

"...but we can't just take some now," I pointed out, "they'll notice."

"What should we do then?" Sasha was on the verge of tears.

"Hey, hey, it's okay," I hurried over to give her a comforting hug, "I'm devastated, too, but we don't have a choice. We need to come up with a plan first, and we don't have time for that right now." Sasha sniffled into my shoulder before suddenly remembering all of the other food. She dashed into the pantry and returned with three boxes of rolls, a bag of potatoes, and a whole watermelon.

"People will notice, Sahsa," I reminded her, the sadness of losing food overwhelming me.

"Not if we eat it all!"

I hesitated for a moment before giving in entirely and taking the bag of potatoes from her arms. She glared at me when I reached for them but I told her to calm down and get over it, I was just helping out. She reluctantly handed the bag over and we escaped into the night with our precious bounty.

As we turned the corner to the girls' barracks, I noticed a figure standing outside near the steps. I stopped dead in my tracks and stuck my arm out in front of Sasha, stopping her too.
"What's wrong," Sasha's voice was muffled by a potato in her mouth and by my hand that slapped over it.

"Someone is in front of the barracks," I hissed.
Sasha choked on the potato.
