"Captain Levi?" I breathed, freezing.
"Who are you?" he spat, putting the tiniest bit of pressure onto the blade poking my back.
"I-I'm Y/N!" I said, terrified, "Don't you know me?"
"You killed our comrades back there," the Captain said, venom dripping from his words.
What?
No, I didn't! I didn't kill anyone! I just went to look at the female titan, not kill people! What's he talking about?"What?" I asked, still not sure I heard him right.
"Don't play dumb," he hissed, "you slaughtered them all."
"I don't understand, sir!" I replied, panicking.
"Captain Levi!" Eren exclaimed behind me. I started to turn my bead, but froze when I felt Levi's grip on the sword, "I don't remember what happened when I transformed the first time!"
"Idiot, this isn't her first time transforming," Levi told him, "She's clearly done it before." I heard the footsteps of more soldiers approaching.
"Done what?" I asked, terrified, "Please, Sir, I don't know what's—"
"Take her into custody. We're going to retreat," Levi's blade dropped from my back, but I didn't dare move. I jumped when I felt two Scouts grab my arms, but I let them drag me back towards the forest and carts that were now awaiting us.
Eren watched with a look of horror on his face as I was thrown into the cart with my hands tied. I just looked back at him with what I can only assume was the exact same expression.
——
The cart wasn't empty as it jostled and shook across the grass. We were returning from the 57th Expedition outside the walls, though not at all in the way we'd planned. Or, rather, not how the Scouts had planned. Erwin seemed to have had different ideas from the start. My shoulders bumped against the two anxious, sweating Scouts that were pressed against my sides, ensuring that I wouldn't be able to escape.
I still had no idea what was going on, though I was pretty sure I fucked up because my hands were tied behind my back and there was a cloth tied around my head, holding my mouth slightly open as I bit down on the rough fabric.
"I can't believe I'm sitting this close to a traitor," the soldier to my left hissed under his breath.
A traitor?
I'm not a traitor...
I twisted my head towards him, but both of the Scouts flinched and grabbed their swords, leaving me no option but to freeze in place again. "Please, I don't understand what's happening," is what I tried to say, but my words were so muffled by the cloth that I'm sure they didn't understand me.
"We're almost there," the Scout to my right said wearily, "just a little longer until we can get rid of this... this enemy to humanity." He shot me a glare, but I didn't have the chance to react, as a soldier a few meters from the cart shouted up to Captain Levi.
"They're getting closer!"
I whipped my head around to see a huge mass of titans galloping towards the regiment. At this rate, they would certainly catch up in no time.
"I'll go behind them!" A Scout on the cart next to ours stood up. The cart was piled with bodies wrapped in bloodied cloth, the remains of my comrades soaking through the thick fabric, "I can hold them off until--"
"No," Captain Levi appeared on his horse between our two carts, "Abandon the bodies," he looked straight forward, not making eye-contact with any of the soldiers, "They'll reach us." I gazed in horror at the mass of lost souls on the cart and choked on the cloth when I saw a lock of orange hair beneath one of the blankets.
I screamed through the fabric in my mouth and felt the grip on my elbows tighten as I tried desperately to catch the Captain's attention. "Hey, shut it, titan," the first Scout told me angrily, shoving my arm, "You're the one who killed them, aren't you?"
I stopped screaming and stared at the soldier. "Huh?" I asked, my tone understandable.
"It worked," the other Scout said, ignoring my obliviousness, "they're keeping up... and the titans can't." Sure enough, the titans were falling behind and the cart previously full of bodies was now empty aside from the two Scouts inside of it. I certainly did not think it was worth the sacrifice. If I hadn't been tied up like some animal, I could've killed that titan easily and saved the soldiers and those dead--
wait.
Petra... is dead?
I thought she was a part of the Levi Squad? I thought they caught the female titan... so why wasn't Petra alive?
"Get out," the Scout to my left jerked me out of my guilt-stricken thoughts. The two soldiers pulled me up by my elbows, marched me out of the cart, and shoved me into what appeared to be the back entrance of an oh-so-familiar courthouse. They led me down a flight of stairs, and I felt one of them move behind me once we reached the bottom. "It'll be easier this way," he said. The other nodded.
Everything went black, yet again.
----
"Hey, Y/N!" I was startled awake by a familiar voice. I sat up straight and reached to rub my eyes, but felt that my hands were held in place. I jerked them, but when I looked down I saw that they were chained in place. What could I possibly have done to be under this much security. "Y/N?" Commander Hanji repeated.
"Oh-oh yes ma'am?" I snapped my head up and looked to see her standing with their face pressed up against the bars of my cell.
"No formalities, Y/N, I'm telling you," she shook her head, "Anyways, I came to pick you up," she smiled.
"For what?" I questioned as she unlocked the door and started towards my bed.
"You don't know?" she stopped and raised an eyebrow. I shook my head. "Uh-oh," she winced, "Well, alright, I'm not sure how to explain it all," she unlocked the shackle on my left hand and walked to the other side of the bed, "basically, you're a—remember what happened to Eren?"
My blood ran cold as I bit my lip and nodded.
"Yours is worse."
"Wait, what?" I jumped, making her take a step back, "What do you mean, worse?"
"Are you playing dumb, Y/N?" Hanji was stepping back as though I were some monster, "Or do you really not know?"
"I don't understand!" I was getting irritated.
"Okay..." Hanji said warily as she came back towards the bed, "'cuz you killed the whole Levi Squad."
