"You'll be home at 5, right?" Kya asked from the comfort of their bed. It was too early to be awake in her opinion, but they had to discuss the plan for tonight.
"Yes," Lin said from the bathroom.
Kya narrowed her eyes, "You promise?"
"I promise."
Kya scoffed.
Lin poked her head into the bedroom, "You don't believe me?"
"I didn't say that."
"You didn't say you believed me either," Lin was standing at the edge of the bed now, staring at her girlfriend.
Kya groaned and rolled over, muffling her face with the pillow.
"Hey," Lin said softly, placing an arm on Kya's shoulder and pushing slightly, rolling her back over, so they made eye contact. "Why don't you believe me?"
Kya groaned, "It's not that I don't believe you, it's just you're the Chief. You come home late almost every night. I trust you, Lin. And I believe you will try to be home by 5."
"Right." Lin's expression steeled. She stood from where she had perched herself on the bed abruptly and left the room.
Kya sat up quickly, her sleepiness leaving her mind as she left the warmth of her bed to follow her girlfriend, "Lin, wait!"
Lin turned on her heel. She straightened her shoulders and clasped her hands behind her back, meeting Kya's call with cold silence.
Kya raised her eyebrows. Woah, Chief mode activated. Lin had never been this way to Kya before. Of course, she had seen it; when Lin spoke to Tenzin about city business, or Bolin started acting like an idiot, but never towards her. "I messed up, didn't I?"
"What do you mean?" Lin's tone was sharp.
Kya inched forward, not wanting to startle the Chief and have her running out the door, "I- I said the wrong thing in there. I didn't mean I don't trust you, I just... I don't know, it's hard to put into words."
"You think I'm unreliable. That you can't count on me to be there. To be there for you." Lin started that sentence with a matter-of-fact tone, but her voice caught on the last sentence, thick with emotion she was trying so hard to suppress.
"Lin, no!" Kya stepped forward, taking Lin's face in her hands, "If there is one thing in this world I can count on, it is you. You may be late sometimes, but you are always, always, there when I need you."
A tear fell from the corner of Lin's eye, Kya brushed it away with her thumb, "I'm sorry. I made you feel this way. You deserve better. You deserve to be happy, Lin."
Lin looked away, silent tears still falling. No one had ever told her that. No one had ever assured her that she deserved to be happy, and loved. She pulled Kya in by the waist, wrapping her arms around her. She inhaled deeply, calming herself with the scent of lavender in Kya's hair.
"I love you."
"I love you, too."
"I'll be home at 5, I promise."
---------------------------------------------------------
Not only was Lin home by 5, but she was home early. Kya was shocked when the door swung open at 4:47.
Lin smiled smugly in the doorway, "Told ya."
Her girlfriend giggled from her spot on the couch. As Lin made her way over to her, she bent off her amour. She knelt down next to the couch and placed a gentle kiss on Kya's forehead, "How was your day?"
Kya smiled softly, "It was alright, but it's better now." She pulled Lin so that she lay on top of the waterbender, her head resting lightly on the blue fabric covering her chest.
The two women lay there for a while, enjoying the calm before the storm. Finally, Kya interrupted their serenity, "We have to get ready."
Lin groaned loudly and pouted her lips, "I don't want to."
Kya giggled, Lin's whining was different from her usual demeanor. Even as children, Kya never saw Lin complain, she always just did what she had to do, giving off no signs that she didn't like whatever task she was put up to. She looked down at Lin's pouted lips and sloped eyes, "You're cute, but we have to get ready."
Lin pushed herself of Kya with a grunt, "Ugh, fine. But I'm not happy about it."
