Forgotten Faces

The sun had begun to peek through the tress, and I covered my eyes. I guess I had fallen asleep at some point, because I was laying on the ground.

I groaned, and pushed myself to the knees. Looking around, I could finally see clearly. The forest wasn't so dense here, and maybe I could find my way somewhere now. Standing, I brushed the dirt and leaves off my clothes, and started towards to direction the sun was rising. I had no idea which way I had come from, so now I guess I could only pray I'm not going back.

It didn't take long before I found a road. That was a miracle. And proof I'm still getting further from Carol. I started down the road, watching and listening for cars. Any one of them might be Carol coming for me. I was nothing but an asset for her. Money in her pocket.

As the sun grew higher, still no cars had come. I began to grow worried. Where the hell am I? Thoughts started to flood my mind, and I couldn't remember anything about myself.

What's my name? How old am I? I grabbed at my hair and looked at it. Was it always that color? I felt sick. I don't know anything anymore. I looked back at the road and continued to walk. I needed to get answers.

I walked for hours. My feet hurt. I wasn't getting anywhere. No signs, so cars, not even street lamps. Eventually, I collapsed to my knees, and stared crying.

"What am I supposed to do?" I cried out, head in hands. I sat on the ground for a long time, just crying.

I couldn't remember why I was there. What was I running from? What is...

I heard a car.

I jumped to my feet, glancing back and forth to see where it was coming from. Finally, around a corner, I saw its slick figure glisten in the sun.

I wanted to scream, and run out in the road, but something held me back. It told me to wait. To stand like a helpless child on the side. So I did. I stood and watched the car pass.

I saw my decrepit reflection on the car as it sped past me, its slick black material glimmering under the afternoon sun. I wiped my eyes on my sleeve, and continued to watch the car travel along the road. After it disappeared around a corner, I started off in the direction it came from. I figured it must be somewhere I can get help, since such a nice car came from there. Hopefully...

It was dark by the time I reached a town. It was a smaller one, clearly meant for locals or people passing through.

I walked along the buildings, looking for one that might be of help to me. A diner? A bar? Something? Everything looked closed. Like it was a ghost town, abandoned. I kept walking through the town. Finally, I saw a store with lights on.

A smile broke out on my face, and I ran towards it. I pushed the door open, and walked inside, followed by the little jingle on the door.

A drug store? It was older, with dim florescent lights buzzing overhead. I could hear a radio, or maybe TV playing in the back. I walked along the aisles, running my hand along the shelves.

I paused at the display with newspapers. I picked on up and read over the headlines. There was a picture of a girl on the cover, and a picture of a condo that looked eerily familiar to me.

"Missing girl. Name Y/N, Height, Y/H, Hair color Y/H/C. Last seen October 5th, 2016.

Police reports say she was taken from her home in Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania. She apparently lived alone with a pet dog. If you have any information on her, please contact the authorities."

I gripped the newspaper tightly. Tears began to swell in my eyes.

"Miss?" a voice called out. I glanced back, and there was an older man learning over the pharmacy counter.
