Chapter 2

Wayne took a step forward and stood in front of me. My eyes trailed up his jeans to his plain black shirt to his dreamy eyes. Wayne raised a hand to help lift me up, and I took it.

Once I got to my feet, I froze. My hand was in Wayne's. His gaze roamed my face, while mine stayed on his eyes. My lips spread apart and I took a heavy breath in. I wanted to move in closer, but my unconscious brother stopped my thoughts.

I blinked a couple of times and looked down. I walked around him and he followed closely behind me. I locked the back door, grabbed a spare key and a pair of tennis shoes, and walked out the door. I handed Wayne the key so he could lock the door while I put on my shoes.

I ran my fingers through my hair and tucked it behind my ears. I keep on forgetting to put on a jacket. I crossed my arms and walked a little faster to Wayne's car. He unlocked the passenger-side door and opened it for me. I got in and smiled to myself, then pushed that fuzzy feeling down.

When Wayne walked to the other side of the car, I looked around. It was black inside and out. The wheel was smoothed over with a leather grip and barred the Toyota logo. The floorboards were clean; he keeps good care of his car. The seat was soft under my bare thighs and I leaned my head against the door.

Wayne opened the car door and slouched in. He leaned over so his head was touching my shoulder. His hands roamed the backseat, searching for something. I stiffened and looked out the window. Wayne sat back up and held out a hoodie.

"Put this on," he said as he set it in my lap. I ran my hands on the black cotton material. I wanted to argue, but I was freezing, so I pulled it over my head. It was so long, I had to lift my hips to put it on completely. It ended at my mid-thigh and covered the shorts I wore underneath.

I fluffed my hair out of the hood and looked over at Wayne. His mouth was slightly agape and his eyes were on my legs.

"Thanks," I said, using my voice to distract him. Wayne's eyes looked at mine, and they fluttered down to my body again, then straight ahead towards the road. He hummed a quick response and turned on the car.

"Do you know what you want?" Wayne asked me after he turned off the car in front of McDonalds.

"Yeah, a sausage McMuffin and a hash brown."

Wayne nodded and we got out of the car. We walked toward the restaurant with a wide distance between us. He opened the door for me and I mumbled a thank you. All of the booths were empty and there were only two or three cars in the drive-thru.

"Hey, what can I get you guys today?" The employee asked Wayne and me in their customer service voice, which made me worn out just hearing it. They had messy black hair and were missing their name tag.

"Hey, could we get a sausage McMuffin and two hashbrowns?" Wayne said, in a slightly higher voice than normal. It's the same voice he talks to my mom in.

"Absolutely, any beverages?"

"Um, yeah, one coffee and," he turned to me and spoke deeply, "do you want orange juice?"

"Yes, please," I said from behind him quietly while playing with my hands.

"So, a coffee and an orange juice," Wayne said.

The worker typed on the keyboard at an unbelievably rapid speed. "Alright, the sausage McMuffin, two hashbrowns, coffee and orange juice will be $8.57."

Wayne reached in his pocket, pulled out a 10 dollar bill and set it on the counter. "The rest is your tip."

"Thank you, sir," the employee smirked. I tried not to show the cringe on my face. It's five in the morning.
