Chapter 38
"Lunch today is Schoolhouse pizza..." I semi-listened to the Monday morning announcements. I was more focused on the guy behind me.
I haven't looked at him yet. I'm scared of how he will look at me. What side of Wayne does he want to be today?
Wayne was so different on Saturday. He switched between romantic, dominant, adorable, sexy, dangerous, submissive. It made my head spin thinking about how many different things happened that night.
"Let's all bring our thoughts to Santiago and Evan Casey. We hope they have a speedy recovery and get back out on the football field." The announcer said.
My head whipped up so fast I felt sick. There were two men that night, both of them in great pain. They're brothers, too. What did Wayne do? How did he fight off two football players and put them in the hospital?
I turned around a bit and Wayne was already staring at me. He kept his face blank; guilt free. He shook his head twice. The motion was so subtle that it looked like a twitch.
I kept my head down and walked out of the classroom. I did this quietly so I wouldn't disturb anybody. I didn't ask the teacher if I could, but I went to the bathrooms.
I need to think. I will never tell anybody about what happened that night. I can't. Even if I wanted to get them in trouble for harassing me, I wouldn't be able to. That would link Wayne to all of this and he could get expelled.
I went to the bathrooms, but they were too full. Nobody really noticed me when I looked in and walked right out. I gave up and decided to go back to class.
After I left the bathroom, I ran into Wayne. I jumped back and he grabbed my arm, tugging me into the boys' room. He locked the door.
"Wayne, what did you-" I looked at him wide eyed, hysterical.
"Shhh, shhh." He whispered and pulled me close to his body. "It's okay."
Everything that has ever happened to me, Wayne has been there. The guy at the party he threw against a wall. The guy at the gas station that looked at me differently. He whipped out a gun, then hid it somewhere in his car.
I connected the dots I have never thought of before. If he had not driven away when he did, he could have shot them.
"You c-could have," I started, "you have a-"
Wayne covered my mouth with his hand and someone opened a bathroom stall. He pushed me lightly into the nearest one.
"Hey, David." He greeted the person who walked out.
"What's going on?" He had a deep voice. "Who's in there?"
"No one, it's fine."
This person named David walked around to the sink and knocked on the side of my stall. I flinched a little from the sound that echoed around the walls.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, thanks." I tried to speak a little normally.
"You sure?"
"Mhm." I mumbled.
"Don't do anything stupid." I assumed he said this to Wayne.
I just stood in the stall waiting for him to leave so Wayne could explain. He came in with me, in case anyone else entered the bathroom.
Before he could speak, someone walked out of a bathroom stall. The same one Wayne's friend was in. They wore navy nikes. The person practically ran out of the bathroom. Wayne furrowed his eyebrows, but as soon as he reached my eyes, he pushed away his thoughts.
