As Kelsie was getting ready for school Monday morning her phone rang.
"Good Morning Sleepy Head!!" Said a very chipper Scott. "I was talking away last night telling you my deepest, darkest secrets, then I realized, you were snoring.""I don't snore!" Kelsie said laughing.
Scott was laughing too. "no. You're right, it wasn't snoring, but it was a kind of squeeky breathing. It was cute. Kinda like a mouse. I felt like I was sleeping with you." Scott added softly.
"How come you're calling so early?" Kelsie ask as she darted around her room, pulling on clothes and applying make-up all while never losing her hold on the phone.
"I don't know." Scott said sounding bemused himself. "For the first time in my life, this morning, I wished I went to Flower Mound. I get now why Bobby keeps driving across town to take Hope to school. I wouldn't mind driving you to school."
"I live less than five minutes by car." Kelsie said smiling. "That's sweet though." Then she remembered something and added, "oh no!!! I forgot to give you back your jacket." And she found herself hoping that he would come and get it, then mentally kicked herself because that was stupid.
"Oh. I don't need it." Scott said, "why don't you just wear it a while? It's really comfortable. I've got it broken in until it's perfect."
"OK!" Kelsie said with a smile. She liked the jacket. It smelled like Scott. It was black leather and kind of big on her, but it was comfortable. Really comfortable.
Kelsie walked into school an hour later with a smile on her face and Scott's jacket zipped around her. It really did smell just like him. She remembered when he put it on her Saturday and the feel of him behind her with his arms wrapped around her and she shivered. "Oh for crying out loud!!! Get a grip!!" She told herself.
Then she sat down at the table to find Hope and Kimmi both staring at her like she had grown another head. Kimmi spoke first, "why are you wearing Scott's leather jacket."
"Oh." Kelsie said with a huge dreamy smile. "I got cold Saturday and he put it on me. Then he told me just to keep it and wear it a while. I like it."
"No way!!!" Hope said and Kimmi said, "you're shitting me?"
Kelsie looked at Kelly who just shrugged and said, "Y'all, guys give girls their jackets all the time. It's not a big deal."
"Not Scott." Kimmi said.
"Scott doesn't part with that jacket." Hope added. "You'd have a better chance of him going to buy you a jacket."
"Seriously?" Kelsie ask laughing at the idea that Scott could be so attached to a jacket. "He acted like it was no big deal."
"It's a big deal." Kimmi said. "I've known him for a while and he's never let anyone wear that jacket even for a minute. He'd sure never let somebody keep it. That jacket comes second only to the truck."
"I don't know what to tell you." Kelsie said still smiling. "We went fishing Saturday. When the sun went down it got cold and he put it on me. I tried to give it back, but he said 'no. Keep it' . Maybe it's different because we're friends so he knows I'm not gonna read anything into it?"
"You should probably read into it." Hope said. "I'm his friend and he's never let me near that jacket."
The bell rang for first period and they all got busy gathering their stuff and heading out.
When Kelsie got to her first period class she began to feel something in the lining of the jacket and realized that there was a rip in the pocket that had allowed things to slide into the lining.
