The Monday before Christmas, Kelsie had an appointment with her doctor for a check up. After he had reviewed all of the popular Christmas foods that Kelsie should avoid and had praised her on how much healthier she was, Kelsie took a deep breath and said,
"Umm. How bad would it be if I got pregnant right now?"
Dr. D stopped writing in the chart and looked at her. Completely calm and reserved. "Well Kelsie, ". He said in his most professional voice. "Apart from the fact that you're seventeen, and it would make your life harder. I am very concerned that your body couldn't tolerate a pregnancy and it would be very risky for you and the baby."
"Yeah." Kelsie said, taking a deep breath. "That's kinda what I'm thinking. So ummm I think I'm gonna be needing birth control because I think I may have sex um soon."
Just like Kelsie knew he would, the doctor discussed the different birth control options with no judgement at all. In the end, they decided on the shot since there was a good chance that Kelsie's stomach condition would cause her to throw up the pill. So Kelsie got her shot and headed to work. It didn't occur to her until that night that her receipt would show the charges.
"How was the doctor?" Her mom ask as Kelsie handed her the paperwork.
"It was fine." Kelsie said. "He said just to be careful with my food and my levels look great."
"Good!" Mom said sounding distracted as she looked at the receipt. "What is this sixty dollar charge for Depo something. Is that vitamins"
"Oh no." Kelsie said trying to keep her voice light and even. "That's a birth control shot. Dr. D said he'd go ahead and give me the first one, but I'll have to get something called a Pap smear when I go back in three months."
"Kelsie". Her mom said in the tone that made Kelsie cringe. "Why do you need birth control?"
"Because,". Kelsie said matter of factly. "If I get pregnant now my body wouldn't be healthy enough to handle it."
"Are you planning to have sex?" Her mom ask and Kelsie thought, 'oh good grief '
"Yes. I do. Not right this second, but probably before too much longer." Kelsie said losing patience. "Hell mom, why are you freaking on me? You thought I was having sex with Darren for a year before I did!"
"OK, but if you had sex with Darren why didn't you get on something then?" Her mom looked confused.
"Well. Clearly, I was an idiot." Kelsie said rolling her eyes. "We used a condom every time, but I was taking a risk. I know that now. Luckily we didn't do it much so I got lucky. I still plan to use a condom, but I'm gonna be smarter this time."
"But not with Darren right?" Her mom ask and Kelsie laughed.
"No. Absolutely not with Darren. That's over." Kelsie said and left the room pretty sure that she had just won the prize for most awkward mother/daughter moment.
Christmas Eve was always Kelsie's favorite holiday. Her huge family always got together and it was always fun. This year, Kelsie decided to use the holiday to introduce Scott to everyone since he was going to be very important.
He had already met several of Kelsie's little cousins when she'd brought them along on dates and they all loved him. Now he had to face the hard part, eight very protective uncles.
Kelsie wasn't at all surprised that everyone loved him. How could they not? Scott fit right in and seemed totally at ease with the large group. Several times Kelsie lost him only to find him with one uncle or another talking about vehicle care or home improvement.
