"No fucking way! Louise really did that?" Ana had told me on the phone, when I called her from the restaurant's bathroom to tell her that my mother had invited Jordan to lunch, why does this woman hate me so much?! After venting a bit, I returned to the table, which I had left excusing myself not long after giving Jordan a short greeting before he sat down at the table.
"Daughter, we are waiting for you to order" I rolled my eyes and sat down. I motioned for the waiter to stay put that we weren't going to order yet.
"Can you please explain why Jordan was invited to lunch?" I said dryly staring at my mother.
"Emma Cate Montgomery! Don't be discourteous, we're only going to be here for a few days and I wanted to take the opportunity to see him" said my mother frowning, she was frowning? As if I was the one who invited her ex-boyfriend to lunch!
"I'm sorry Emma, I thought you knew, I think I'd better go" said Jordan getting ready to get up.
"No, no, not a chance, please stay" she said putting a hand on Jordan's shoulder while I glared at her. I grabbed my bag that was on an empty chair and my father grabbed my hand, he looked at me with sad eyes as if begging not to go, I gave him a face, sighed and dropped my bag. I motioned to the waiter and we ordered.
Louise was in charge of the conversation, asking Jordan about work and family, I dedicated myself to eat in silence, my father talked from time to time trying to include me in the conversation, but I only answered with a yes or no.
"Well, excuse me, but I have to ask you both, how long are you going to be like this? There is nothing that can be solved in life, settle your differences and go back to being the beautiful couple that you were" That was the straw that broke the camel's back, I was about to explode, my jaw was clenched, and I was breathing deeply. But before I could speak Jordan spoke up.
"Louise, unfortunately our relationship as a couple ended for good, I adore your daughter and I just hope that in the future we can be friends again" My mouth fell open from the surprise of hearing Jordan say that. That therapist was a God.
"But why?" my mother asked, I glared at her, but she wasn't looking at me, her question was directed at Jordan only, like he was the one that had the final say.
"Louise, dear God! That is their business. Catie had made it clear to you that they broke up, now Jordan is repeating it to you, these things happen, and you have to respect them" my father said seriously. She rolled her eyes and then gave us a fake smile before returning to her plate. Jordan looked at me sideways and smiled sheepishly. Lunch continued without any further hints from my mother, mostly the conversation between Jordan and Dad about the real estate business. We didn't order dessert, I asked the waiter to charge the bill to my account without paying attention to Jordan's insistence to pay for it, then he apologized again, said goodbye and left.
"Mother, never do that again, do not try to interfere in my life again! It was a total lack of respect on your part inviting my ex to the lunch that I had invited you to" I said trying to sound as calm as possible.
"Oh Emma! I don't know why you have to act so childish! But it's okay, I won't do it again, you'll see what you do with your life" she said pretending to be offended
"Yes, I'll see, because it's my life!" I said running my hands through my hair with frustration "You know, today I wanted to have lunch with you, just the three of us, I wanted to tell you that I am happy, I am dating someone and this person makes me immensely happy" I said more calmly, my father looked at me lifting Eyebrows.
