Chapter 4: a new arrival

I awoke at first light hanging limply and almost falling off my branch, and wondering where I was. Then I remembered yesterday’s events. I got dressed and headed out. No one else was awake yet so I decided to get everyone some breakfast. Some animals had also gotten blasted up here with us and have done a lot better then us, so there is a surplus of meat in this forest. There was everything from ants to deer.

As I quietly stalked through the leaves and twigs, I caught sight of a rustling bush and froze. Through the bush’s leaves I saw patches of brown moving around. A deer, I thought to myself. I notched an arrow and carefully took aim. Then through the bushes a pair of eyes caught sight of me. “No! Wait! Don’t shoot!” a girl came running up to me waving her hands. “Please don’t shoot the poor little deer.” With the sudden noise the deer leaped up and away.

“Aww you scared away my breakfast.” I whined mockingly. “so, since you scared my breakfast away you owe me food.”

“I’m sorry!” The girl said fearfully, backing away.

“What’s going on?” Grace said, tramping through the forest.

“She stopped me from shooting us some breakfast.” I pointed out, trying to keep from smiling.

“I thought you might have gotten killed by a bear or something. Don’t be so hard on the girl, there’s plenty of other animals to kill for breakfast.” Grace smiled warmly.

“What?! No! Please don’t kill any more animals! Their innocent! What had they ever done to you to be killed?!” the girl ranted.

“Then what should we do? starve?” I retaliated.

“I am guessing you are not familiar with our circumstances. We were the humans that survived the explosion and have been able to find some refuge in this island.” Grace explained.

“Oh I have heard rumors about humani living on this island... Here, I packed a pantry of foods in my bag, you can have it as apology for scaring away your deer.” the girl handed over her leather bag that she had been carrying.

I stared at the bag cautiously, a pantry of foods in this small thing??? “Is this some sort of joke?” I asked.

“Oh yeah, I forgot to introduce myself. I am princess of the magic users, Gypsy.” she added hesitantly.

“You are a magic user?” Grace questioned, drawing out her sword.

“Um yeah...” Gypsy answered staring fearfully at the sword.

“Grace, put away your sword. I don’t think she means any of us any harm.” I told her.

“No. I am going to keep it out until I am sure she doesn’t ‘mean us and harm’” Grace retorted as I accepted the bag of foods from Gypsy. “Let’s take to our camp as hostage, I think Dreck would be pleased to see her.” Grace added grinning at the idea.

“What?! What do you mean by that???” Gypsy asked fearfully.

I’m sure my face turned icy cold at Grace’s comment. “I’ll make sure you won’t be harmed by the others...” I told Gypsy. But before I finished, Grace was already marching her towards camp with her sword pointed at Gypsy’s neck.
