(Y/N) was currently in her cottage on Jabberwock Island, preparing herself for the party Byakuya had arranged for them all to get closer together. Well, that's what he claimed. Being the Ultimate (Y/T), (Y/N) could tell there was a more sinister meaning behind his sudden proposal and was quick to get to the bottom of it. She wasn't even going to attend the party until she discovered someone's secret. She was lucky she kept her ultimate on the low; it gave her an advantage against the others as she seemed more naive. That was far from the truth.
(Y/N) wore a (F/O) with a pair of (F/S) to finish the outfit. Glancing down at her watch, she noticed it was now 10pm. She had set a timer for 11:29pm on her watch so she was prepared to act on time, so checked it was still going one more time before making her way to the old building adjacent to the hotel. It was still quite early as the area was quiet and Byakuya was still standing by the entrance with a duralumin case by his feet. Hajime was currently getting body searched by him while Ibuki and Chiaki stood behind him. (Y/N) made her way up to behind Chiaki as she waited for her turn to get searched. She fumbled with the hem of her sleeves and daydreamed as she stood in the queue, dreaming about a handsome man, sweeping her off her feet and taking her-
"(Y/N), you're up." Byakuya announced in his stern tone.
Snapped from her imagination, she hastily stood in front of the tall man and allowed him to do what he needed, feeling quite awkward as he pat down her entire body. Soon enough, he was done and gave her the all clear, allowing her to enter the building and go into the dining hall. Scanning the beautifully decorated room, her eyes landed on a certain individual that was the reason she came in the first place.
Nagito.
He smiled amicably at her and gave a gentle wave, to which she reciprocated with a small smile before turning to dwell in the corner of the room, not being much of an extrovert. In fact, she was the complete opposite which was quite surprising as her talent suggested otherwise. Additionally, she had a small interest in the white haired male, so found herself feeling out-of-place while interacting with him. Why she had such an interest, she couldn't quite understand but she knew that she had to engage with him. That's why she was here, after all.
Soon enough, everyone (bar Fuyuhiko) had gathered in the small dining hall and Byakuya had commenced the party after scolding Teruteru for putting iron skewers in the meat in the most bizarre fashion. Everyone was chatting amongst themselves, laughter echoing through the halls and people relishing in Teruteru's delicious cooking. (Y/N) kept to her corner however, eyeing everyone in the room before once again landing on Nagito. He was situated alone further back in the room, near the back table and standing next to a power cord. (Y/N) quickly concluded that the cord was his navigator. She checked her watch quickly; 11:02pm. The time was moving fast, there wasn't much left until she had to take action. Pushing herself off the wall with her foot, she hesitantly made her way over to accompany Nagito and greeted him with a simple 'hello'.
"Hello, (Y/N), what brings you here to talk to someone like me?" Nagito said in his usual cheery attitude.
"I just wanted to talk, if that's okay." She timidly asked.
In all honestly, she was terrified for what was about to happen. Despite her calm demeanour, she had given herself a great responsibility and the fear of failure niggled at her mind. She needed to ensure she succeeded or everything would go wrong.
"Of course, so do you like how I decorated the place? It's not much but, it took me the entire day!" He said, referring to the hall.
"Yes, it's very nice. You did a good job, Nagito." She praised, quickly looking over to the clean room before looking back at him.
She could tell he was feeling on edge. Her compliment caused him to shake his head with a small smile.
"It's really nothing, it's the least I could do for you all."
"Thank you. It's deeply appreciated." (Y/N) replied, placing her back to the wall as she neared Nagito.
She needed to ensure she was close to him before the blackout for her plan to work.
"Awh, you're really too kind." Nagito scratched the back of his neck.
How was he feeling right now? Well, aside from the obvious anticipation for the upcoming event, he was also feeling quite enamoured. This girl, whom he barely knew, she radiated a sense of... hope. There was something about her gentle eyes and her kindness towards the boy that peaked his interest. He tried not to think too much of it, after all, she didn't know his true nature (as far as he was concerned) and was probably just being pitiful. Moreover, he didn't even know her ultimate talent, although he had already convinced himself she was miles above him no matter what it was.
11:25pm... she didn't have long left. Swallowing her nerves, she began her plan.
"Say, Nagito, can I ask you something?" She questioned him, keeping her voice down so the others couldn't eavesdrop.
"Of course, is everything okay?" He responded, his head tilted to the side so he was facing her.
"Would you ever hate me?" (Y/N) asked.
Nagito let out a small 'huh?' before answering her question.
"No, I don't think I would."
"Even if I did something a bit annoying?" She continued.
11:28pm...
"I'm sure no matter what you'll do, you would've done it for a valid reason." Nagito replied.
To him, she was just another symbol of hope. He wouldn't dare disrespect someone of such great potential.
"Okay then, that's good." (Y/N) smiled to herself before glancing down at her watch.
Nagito followed her gaze and saw the timer on her watch... she was counting down...?
~BZZT~
That was his cue. Nagito hastily went to go navigate his way to the table, but was quickly held back by an arm wrapping around his and pulling him back which caused him to fall back and onto the floor.
"Ow!"
"Uwah! The power's out!"
"The hell happened? I can't see the food!"
"It's too dark! Everything is too dark!"
"C-calm down everyone! We have to stay calm at a time like this!"
"I need to SHIIIIIIIIIIT!"
"W-wait here! I'll use the walls as a guide to see if I can fix this..."
(Y/N) held a firm grip on Nagito's arm despite his obvious struggle to try and break free and soon enough..
~BZZT~
"Ah, Mikan!" Mahiru protested.
Mikan was sprawled out in a very... suggestive position on the floor, legs wide and arms bound together. As everyone fussed to tend to her, (Y/N) let go of Nagito's forearm as he looked up at her in shock.
"Is everyone alright?" Byakuya asked, donning a set of night vision goggles.
Everyone glanced at each other and nodded as they confirmed that everyone was okay, Teruteru soon joining in on the chaos. Nagito was safe, she had done her job. That was her first mistake.
"Could anyone care to explain what just happened? There was no way that was just a coincidence." Byakuya demanded.
(Y/N) glanced up at Nagito and saw the tense look on his face before stepping forward and heading to the back table and grabbing the knife from underneath. Everyone gasped as they saw the weapon in her hands and she held up her arms in defence.
"It... was me. I'm sorry." She lied. "The tension of this whole killing game and my own paranoia made me convince myself I needed to get out of here. But tonight helped me realise that it isn't the only way out of here. I'm really sorry for causing such distress, I promise I'll never attempt to do such a horrible thing again."
She handed the knife over to Byakuya as he took it from her grasp.
"I understand if you all hate me now... I still hope that we can get through this together, though." (Y/N)'s shaky tone from her nerves made her act even more believable.
"Well... that's okay. As long as you never do such a thing again. You should know that you're not alone in this situation, we're here to support you if you have any doubts." Byakuya reassured her, much to her surprise. "I'm sure you're not the only one who has felt on edge lately."
A chorus of agreements echoed around the room from the other students, except for a few snarky remarks from Hiyoko but (Y/N) couldn't really give two shits about the little brat. She smiled at Byakuya and at all the others.
"Thank you all... so much. We can do this, we can get out of here as long as we work together." She stated as the others cheered in response.
"Well then... let's keep partying!" Ibuki yelled as everyone resumed their activities.
(Y/N) made her way back over to Nagito and positioned herself next to him, waiting for him to speak.
"Why?" A single word escaped from his lips.
(Y/N) paused for a minute as she thought about her answer.
"Nagito, I'll be honest with you. There's something about you that I can't help but be interested in. I know, I probably sound like a freak right now, but I want to help you." She began. "I found out about your plan from the moment Byakuya proposed a party. It was so out of character for him. So I went out of my way to try and figure out what the hell was going on. And I did. You were trying to get yourself killed so you could be a stepping stone for hope, right?"
Nagito's breath hitched as she explained herself, quite surprised that she was able to figure out his plan with such little knowledge about him.
"Heh, so you found out about my little obsession... now you really know what a lowly piece of scum I am." Nagito looked downcast as he spoke his words before quickly replacing his expression with a smile.
"No, I don't think that at all." (Y/N) retorted. "We all have our own obsessions, right? Yours just happens to be hope. The human body desires what the human body wants. Plus, I don't think it's a bad thing. Having hope can get you through difficult times, there's nothing wrong with clinging onto such a thing. We all have our own forms of hope, y'know."
Nagito scanned her expression for any sign of falsehood, but was shocked to find that not a hint of it was evident on her expression. Instead, a genuine expression coated her face.
"Our own forms of hope?" Nagito questioned, wanting to discover her own idea of the word.
"Yep. Something that catalyses our desire to keep pushing forward. For example, Ibuki's music helps her to stay positive." (Y/N) smiled weakly as her gaze drifted downwards. "What truly matters is that you're still alive which means I succeeded in my goal. I know we barely know each other, but I have a feeling we're going to get on quite well."
"You want to be friends?" Nagito asked, quite baffled by this girl's nature.
She was like nothing he had ever met before... she was above these symbols of hope, she was... different. And he was going to cling to it as much as he could.
"Ah, yes, that's if you'd like to be friends with someone like me." She awkwardly laughed. "I totally understand if you don't want to be, after all, I'm not the most interesting person."
She had let her degrading nature slip, which didn't go unnoticed by the young male. A smile etched his way onto his lips as he nodded to her request.
"I'd love to be friends with you. I'd never had a real friend before." He confessed.
"Me neither." (Y/N) responded.
Nagito kept his eyes on the shorter female, totally amazed by her behaviour. He had never met someone so willing to be his friend... the thought of the bad luck waiting for him sent shivers down his spine.
"Hey, I don't think you ever told me. What's your talent?" Nagito asked, knowing full well she had kept it from him.
(Y/N) raised her head to face Nagito, hesitating slightly before answering him:
"Well, we are friends now so it would be wrong of me to keep such a thing from you. I'm the Ultimate (Y/T). I trust you not to take advantage of that."
Nagito felt his heart race; she trusted him. That was her second mistake.
"What a wonderful talent, such a fitting title for someone as brilliant as yourself. No wonder you understand me so well." Nagito gushed.
(Y/N) held back her tongue as he said how amazing her talent was. She decided it was best to not discuss the hardships that came with the talent. She had gone through some pretty despairing moments to develop her talent and even when she finally could be called the ultimate (Y/T), she was burdened by the tasks and the fear of being taken advantage of. It's true, the talent could come in handy like it did that night, but the weight she carried on her shoulders was pure hell.
"You probably won't believe me but... I think your talent is really cool." (Y/N) confessed. "Luck can be a dangerous thing but also a wonderful asset. I hope it brings you to a place you can be happy with in the future."
Nagito felt himself blush at the girl's compliment. Maybe this friendship would be different from the rest. That's what he hoped and he planned to ensure it.
They spent the rest of the night sharing idle chit chat to get to know each other better as the rest of the class ate, danced and laughed throughout the night. Before they knew it, Monokuma's morning announcement played and the party came to a conclusion and the class departed the building.
(Y/N) planned to just burrow herself back into her cottage until something happened, but Nagito wouldn't let her stay astray for too long.
No, he needed to protect her hope...
