The day you found out about Nagito's diagnosis was crushing. Him being so calm while telling you he had less than a year to live, it was heartbreaking. Even more so when he had told you that he had no intentions of fighting back at all, opting to just let the illness corrupt his body and take his life in the end. So you spent weeks imploring and nagging him to get treatment, terrified of losing the one person who understood you so well. At first, he refused, saying he didn't deserve to live and that doctors shouldn't waste their time on someone as lowly as himself. But you refused too, persisting and doing your best to persuade him every day. It took a while, but eventually you got there."Nagito please... if you won't do it for yourself, do it for me, for your friends, even hope goddammit! I don't want to lose you, you're my best friend." (Y/N) begged.
"It's terminal, (N/N), it won't go away. I've long accepted my fate. Please don't be sad over worthless trash like me." Nagito smiled through it all.
"Shut up! You're not trash, you are everything to me! Nagi, please at least try! With your luck, there's still hope." (Y/N) began to cry. "Nagito, I don't know what I'd do without you. You're the only person who appreciates me for me and you've inspired me so much! I don't care how much you don't believe me, you are a beacon of hope in my eyes!"
Nagito stared at their upset form, surprised to see how much they cared about him. He didn't know what to say, never having someone who cared so deeply about him before. He felt his smile waver a bit, hating to see his friend and an ultimate in such despair.
"Hope, huh? An admirable quality of yours." Nagito smiled sadly. "Okay, (Y/N), just for you."
(Y/N) let out a cry of relief and wrapped their arms around his shoulders, hugging him tightly.
"Thank you so much, we're going to get through this together okay?" They promised, squeezing him gently.
"Thank you, (N/N)." Nagito whispered, feeling the tears threaten to fall.
You were so precious and so kind to him. He didn't deserve you, he truly believed that you were an angel above him. Yet you treated him like an equal, such purity and generosity. Never had someone made his heart swell and mind go blank, flustered and smitten with you, with (Y/N).Starting his treatment was rough to say the least. He didn't like any of the needles, the atmosphere was too loud for him and the process was long and tiring. It was the first time you had seen him cry in discontent. Sure he would cry when he got overwhelmed with 'hope', but this wasn't one of his outbursts. You remember how your heart cracked when the first tear fell, gradually spiralling into full-on sobs while he muttered self-deprecating things about himself.
"I don't deserve this (Y/N)! I deserve to shrivel up and die alone, a nobody like me deserves to be nothing more than dirt beneath a shoe." He cried, clutching his hair. "Let me go! I can't take this."
(Y/N) held the sobbing boy in their arms, gently speaking to him and combing their fingers through his white tassels, lightly stroking his scalp.
"Nagi, you deserve the world and more. We're gonna get through this, okay? I'm here for you, I'm not going anywhere." (Y/N) murmured to him. "Don't give into despair, okay?"
"I'll never... I'll never let despair win..." He choked out, clinging onto (Y/N) like his life depended on it. "Please... please stay with me..."
He sounded so innocent, so childlike; a boy who had no one to greet him at home. It broke their heart, hearing their best friend so vulnerable but they clung on tighter, even kissing the top of his head for comfort.
"Always, I'll never leave you." (Y/N) reassured.Time went on and Nagito became more accustomed to his new routine. He was much more relaxed during appointments and would hold tightly onto (Y/N)'s hand to keep himself strong during the treatment. (Y/N) kept their promise, staying by his side throughout it all, even during the bad times and certainly during the good.
"You wanted to speak to me?" (Y/N) tilted their head, looking at the doctor in curiosity.
"Yes, I thought it would be better if the news came from you." The doctor looked solemnly at them. "The treatment... he's not getting any better."
(Y/N)'s face fell, tears threatening to fall from their eyes.
"No, no that can't be right. Can you double check? Are you sure you've got the right person? It's Nagito Komaeda, he's getting chemotherapy and he should... he should..." their voice slowly quietened.
"I'm sorry, there is no mistake. I'll give you some time." The doctor gave them a sympathetic smile before leaving (Y/N) alone.
Your face was bare, ridden of emotion and eyes void of hope. You fought so hard, Nagito fought so hard... and nothing had changed. Nagito had told you it was no use but you didn't want to give up hope... you wanted to prove him wrong and give him the life he deserved. Yet you were the one who was to be proven wrong. The tears fell, staining your cheeks as muffled sobs escaped your lips. This was it.
