non despair au
Another day, another class at Hope's Peak Academy. That was the usual agenda for (Y/N), who was a member of the 77-B class at the academy. She was enrolled into the main course as the Ultimate (Y/T), but her first year hadn't gone so well. She had struggled to make any acquaintances with her classmates which left her feeling pretty lonely. She knew it was mostly her fault though, with her underlying phobia of being used for her talent and chucked to the side like she always has been throughout her life. This led to her becoming an outcast in the class as she slowly stopped attending lessons in fear of the judgement from her peers. It wasn't until their teacher was replaced by Chisa Yukizome that she was expected to start attending classes again, much to her distaste.
She was currently in the class right now as Miss Yukizome was giving them her greetings and planning to start a 'hope program' where they all bonded and used their ultimates to achieve a greater hope. She wasn't listening though, her head was in the clouds as she gazed out of the window, looking out at the clear blue sky and feeling the warmth of the sun radiate onto her skin. She couldn't deny it, she was quite relaxed in the moment but her peacefulness was soon disrupted as the class began nattering loudly in excitement. Unbeknownst to her, Chisa had told them all to get ready to introduce themselves individually so they could meet their classmates. Of course she had no friends in the class so she couldn't ask what the fuss was about but she just put it down to something meaningless and turned her gaze back outside. The atmosphere in the classroom was much more positive though, she had to admit, as she could feel excitement, positivity, anticipation and... hope radiating from her classmates. The last time she had turned up to class was pretty depressing as the teacher was passed out on the desk and only three other students had turned up. In a way, she quite liked that the atmosphere was so busy, since it meant she could stay to herself. Her last teacher hadn't even done introductions, so the only thing the rest of the class knew about her was her name. It was pitiful really, being such an outcast when everyone else seemed so close but she tried not to let it get to her. She had some friends in the other years such as Keebo and Kokichi. The two were an unusual duo but bounced off of each other endlessly. Keebo was a very good listener and had helped (Y/N) when she thought she would have to cope with the rest of her time here alone. Kokichi was sort of a bonus to being Keebo's friend; he was very boisterous and quite sly but he and (Y/N) hit it off quite quickly so the three became an unlikely friendship group. She loved the two endlessly; they never took advantage of her like her old friends and liked her for who she really was.
Looking back at the class, she wished she could muster up the guts to make some friends here too. But she felt too out of the loop, feeling like they would only be forced as by now they had found their own groups. Mikan with Ibuki, Mahiru and Hiyoko, Nekomaru with Akane, Sonia always between Kazuichi and Gundham, Peko always near Fuyuhiko, Chiaki mostly spending her time with a guy from another sector of the school; Izuru? Hajime? She knew he went by two names. He was based in the research department mainly but occasionally turned up in the class but (Y/N) could tell it was mainly to see Chiaki. All it took was one glance at his lovesick expression to conclude that he was smitten with the gamer girl. When she was in class though, Chiaki seemed to be comfortable with most people but was mostly focused on her games. She was seen as a pleasant girl, always offering a shoulder to lean on if necessary. (Y/N) hadn't spoken to her personally but she could tell she was a kind person. The last few members of her class were a bit different... Teruteru was the class pervert but it seemed he got on with everyone. Despite his forward nature, all he really wanted was to make great friendships with the people in his class (anything else was a bonus of course).
And then there was Nagito. He caught her eye from the moment she walked into the class for the first time, him being the only one who even bothered to give her a smile. The rest of the class deemed him as a 'weird, hope-obsessed freak' due to his frequent rambles about talent and hope but she knew he was a really nice boy. She felt like she understood how he felt on a deeper level than her classmates and knew his seemingly scary rants were done with good intentions. She hated to admit it, but she was definitely interested in the white-haired boy, maybe even having a small crush on him but she paid no attention to it, putting it down to her just being silly. After all, she barely knew him. It's true she could understand his emotions but they'd only spoke once or twice, and even then it wasn't by their own will. What fascinated her the most though was during their interactions, he felt comfortable around her.
When trying to make new friends, the one thing that always held her back was the uncomfortable vibe wafting off the person as they spoke which just made her feel like a problem. She didn't blame them though, she wasn't the most interesting person and wasn't very stable herself which made her quite upset. She was glad to have Keebo and Kokichi by her side, them being the only ones who made an effort to be her friend.
Her train of thoughts was broken as she heard her name being called out by the teacher. She gave a confused look as she turned her head to see everyone looking at her expectantly, her posture freezing up as their eyes were on her.
"Well then, (Y/N). Why don't you introduce yourself?" Yukizome encouraged.
"Ah..." she stammered slightly, not even knowing what to say. "Um, hi, I'm (Y/N). It's nice to meet you all."
"And what about your ultimate?" She pressed on.
"It's probably something pathetic if it's coming from that trashy skank!" Hiyoko snickered.
(Y/N) felt herself flinch slightly and her shoulders tense as she tried to remind herself that Hiyoko was only reflecting her own insecurities onto others. The blonde was quickly scolded by her teacher, Hiyoko rolling her eyes in annoyance.
"My ultimate...?" Yukizome nodded at (Y/N), which made her feel slightly relaxed. "Ah, yes, I'm the Ultimate (Y/T)..."
Chisa smiled kindly at the girl, to which she found herself returning as she felt less tense. She could already tell she liked her new teacher.
"A brilliant talent!" She praised. "Now, how about you Sonia?"
(Y/N) faded back into her daydream as she smiled slightly to herself. Maybe Yukizome would help her to fit in a little more? She hoped that was the case. Her classmates remained pretty neutral as she introduced herself, only a hint of boredom in the air which she could totally understand as she felt quite the same. She was pleased to hear the bell ring which signalled the end of class as she gathered up her supplies and slung her bag over her shoulder, brushing off her uniform as she went to leave class. She was stopped by Miss Yukizome, who held her behind for a moment.
"I just want to say that what Hiyoko said wasn't true. You are a lovely girl with undeniable talent, I can already tell!" She gave her a closed eye smile.
(Y/N) found herself smiling back as she let out a quiet thank you before excusing herself from the classroom before she was stopped once again.
"Oh! I've waited so long to hear what talent an ultimate like you possesses!" Nagito had grabbed her hand and cupped it in his, slightly startling her as he came from nowhere. "I'm so impressed, but I bet you already knew that, being the Ultimate (Y/T) and all! You possess such a strong hope, it makes me quiver in delight!"
(Y/N)'s eyes widened as the boy started his hope rambling, feeling his emotions with hers as he expressed his thought. Passion, excitement, arousal(? Horny for hope) and a hint of sadness. She was too shell shocked to even interrupt the boy as he started his usual self deprecation, her face burning red as she was spoken to. This was the one she had a small interest in after all and he was holding her hand! And speaking to her out of his own will! She felt clammy and her heart race, her nerves only making things worse as he finally finished his rant.
"Oh... sorry. Did I scare you?" He smiled brightly at her which made her heart stop for a second.
"No... it's okay, I like your little rambles." (Y/N) blurted out before her blush darkened even more. "Ah, I- uh, I have to go!"
Did she really just say that?! How humiliating...
She felt her overwhelming embarrassment take a hold of her as she rushed out of the scene, not wanting to embarrass herself further.
Nagito was still just standing there with a baffled expression on his face. She liked it when he rambled? No one had ever said something like that to him before. Now he was definitely interested in finding out more about the female.
Calming down from her little embarrassing moment, she met up with her two friends in the courtyard, giggling as she saw them up to their usual antics.
"Keeboy, has Miu installed you a dick yet?" Kokichi sniggered.
"No! Do not ask such vile things!" Keebo blushed at his words.
"Hey Keebo, Kokichi!" She greeted as she sat down by the two.
"Ah! It's my favourite person, (Y/N)!" Kokichi cheered.
"That's definitely a lie, we all know Shuichi is your favourite." (Y/N) teased the shorter boy.
He let out an exclamation in shock as Keebo and (Y/N) just laughed at him, knowing about his small crush on the ultimate detective.
"Good afternoon, (Y/N). I hope you are doing well." Keebo greeted as she gave him a small smile, wishing him the same in return.
"Oh! I have a question for you (Y/N)!" Kokichi bounced back into his usual self as (Y/N) cocked her head at him. "What's up with mister grabby hands I saw you with earlier? Nagito, I think he's called?"
(Y/N) blushed noticeably as she reminisced on what she said to him, her embarrassment creeping up on her again.
"Neeheehee, so I was right. The Ultimate (Y/T) has a thing for the Ultimate Lucky Student! How romantic." Kokichi smirked.
"Wha- you didn't even know who he was just a minute ago! And I do not have a thing for him." She retorted.
"It was a lie!" Kokichi snickered.
"My analysis of your heart beat and overall body temperature suggests otherwise, (Y/N)." Keebo added.
"Wha-! Don't analyse me like that!" She pouted as the two teased her about her small infatuation with the male.
As the school day came to an end, (Y/N) was walking alongside Keebo and Kokichi as they made their way home, discussing the events of the day and sharing the occasional gossip with each other. It was quite difficult to tell if they were true or not as most of them came from Kokichi's gob.
Nagito, on the other hand, was walking alongside Fuyuhiko after they had just given Soda some confidence for his date with Sonia. Nagito was on one of his rants about hope when he suddenly lost his footing on a glass bottle and started rolling down the hill and straight into our Ultimate (Y/T). Fuyuhiko just gawked in astonishment at the complete ridiculousness of the scenario, not knowing whether he should chase after him or not.
(Y/N) was pinned down on the floor with each of Nagito's arms on either side of her with his legs in between hers. She just gaped up at him as she tried to process the sheer randomness of the situation, not knowing how to react as her face broke out into a violent blush.
"You two should kiss!" Kokichi bellowed with his signature giggle, only making the situation more awkward.
Nagito, realising the awkward position he was in, got himself back up to his feet and lent (Y/N) a hand in getting up as well, giving her a apologetic smile.
"Ah I'm so sorry trash like me touched you- " He was suddenly interrupted by the (H/C) girl.
"If you're trash then would you let me take you out." She said it as more of a statement than a question in her awkwardness. "Oh, oh my god I'm so sorry you don't have to answer that you must be so disgusted with me-"
Nagito placed a finger on her lips which caused her to shut up instantly as he gave her a gentle smile.
"I'd prefer if I could take you out instead. Would Saturday be an issue for you?" He asked, in a very smooth manner that almost made (Y/N) drop dead on the spot.
"Saturday's fine, yeah." She agreed, her blush still raging furiously.
Nagito chuckled at her before grabbing out his phone and handing it to her.
"You have a cute blush, (Y/N)." He teased. "Put your number in my phone and I'll text you the details later."
She felt herself burst with heat as she shakily typed in her number, pressing create and handing him back his phone before he smiled amicably and headed back off to walk with Fuyuhiko, leaving (Y/N) stunned on the spot.
"Oh, man! Someone call the fire brigade because (Y/N) is on fire right now!" Kokichi bounced around excitedly. "You just snagged yourself a date, you little flirt!"
(Y/N) sort of let out an exclamation/gasp as she thought about the entire scenario. She had just secured her first ever date and it was with none other than Nagito Komaeda! Her shocked expression turned into a smile as she turned to her two friends, giving them a toothy grin.
"Now we just have to get Keebo with Miu!" Kokichi sniggered.
"And you with Shuichi." Keebo clapped back which sent the other two into fits of laughter as Kokichi stammered over his words.
