She sat on the beach of Jabberwock Island, tracing shapes in the soft sand as the area was illuminated by the soft glow of the moon. Stars littered the black abyss as the sound of waves falling and crashing filled a comfortable silence, the air warm with a gentle breeze swimming through. She felt tired, but couldn't sleep, her mind was plagued with negative thoughts. About the killing game, about her personal struggles, about never getting home. She tucked her knees closer into her chest as she rested her head on her caps, her finger still scribbling random doodles on the beach. She let out a heavy sigh as she tried to accept the fact that she was getting no sleep tonight, her arm growing heavy as she became more fatigued. Her thought process was soon interrupted as she realised she wasn't alone, a small rustling in the nearby parameter breaking her from her daydream.
"Hm?" She let out, turning her head to the direction of the noise.
There stood a good friend of hers, a classmate; Nagito Komaeda. His features were perfectly complimented in the nightlight, his hair softly moving with the wind and a small smile on his lips. To the rest of her classmates, he was seen as a hope-obsessed psychopath after his conflict with the Byakuya-Teruteru incident. But (Y/N) saw more than that in him, understanding his true thoughts and the twisted purity of his intentions. He thought he was doing what was best, and by ignoring him and putting him down, you'll only make it worse. Plus, (Y/N) quite liked the white haired boy. He was kind, easy to talk to and always helped her feel better.
"What are you doing out here at this time of night?" He asked, strolling up closer to her before seating himself next to her.
"I could ask you the same." She smiled, looking at the male. "I couldn't sleep."
She looked back up at the moon while Nagito stayed focused on her face. It was clear to say he was enamoured with the girl. She had shown him such genuine kindness despite his breakdown and seemed to show authentic interest in his views. She was the catalyst to his burning hope and made him think that maybe even scum like him could taste a fragment of hope. He adored that about her; how she made him feel almost equal to her and was there to lend a hand if he needed it. She radiated hope, the hope he so deeply craved and he couldn't get enough of it.
"Me neither. I thought maybe a walk would do me some good. And then I ran into you. How lucky I am." He responded, saying such a thing with nonchalance.
(Y/N) felt her face heat up as he regarded bumping into her as lucky. She never felt like she was an important person to anyone. She grew up with the wrong group of friends and became subject to years of torture and constant abuse from others. She was used over and over again, having people dump their problems onto her shoulders before leaving her in the aftermath. It had left her emotionally scarred and made her believe she was worth nothing; an unimportant speck among people who mattered. But around Nagito, she felt a sense of belonging. When he spoke with her, he expressed interest and listened to her every word. She felt happy when she was with him and had even developed a crush on the boy. Though, she never would've thought he returned her feelings, even as an Ultimate. She could tell he was feeling swooned by something but her self esteem was too low for her to even consider the possibility of it being her. Not when there were so many other amazing choices on this island. She guessed he had a thing for Hinata or Nanami as he spent a lot of time around them too.
"I think I'm the lucky one." She retorted. "How are you feeling?"
Nagito's mouth slightly opened before closing as he processed her words, a light blush creeping up on his pale complexion. She thought it was lucky for him to be there?
"You're way too kind to trash like me, but that's expected of the Ultimate (Y/T)." He went to continue but his speech was cut off by the girl.
"Ko, whether I had this ultimate or not, I'd still feel the same way. My talent has no factor in my relationship with you. You're my friend, alright? I care about you, and I hate it when you degrade yourself. You're the total opposite of trash to me." She spoke honestly. "Now, I'll ask again. How are you?"
Nagito felt his smile widen as she spoke, feeling warmth spread through his chest and his heart beat quicken. He had never experienced such emotions around a person before and it somewhat scared him, but he liked it at the same time. He knew he was in love with her, he couldn't deny the effect she had on him but he was so scared of rejection that he felt unable to voice his feelings.
"I'm okay. A bit tired but overall I'm okay. It's been a quiet day, so nothing much has really happened." He responded.
"I can tell something's playing on your mind. You don't have to tell me, but just know if you need it I'm here for you." She turned back to him and gave him a soft smile.
Of course she could tell that something was bothering him and that small smile she gave him just made him feel even worse as his mind raced with thoughts of being closer to her. Holding her, kissing her, spending time with her — his head was engulfed with urges to just smash his lips onto hers as he resisted his desires. He couldn't do that to her, not trash like him...
"Thank you. I'm okay though, seriously. It's nothing important." He lied, giving her a closed eye smile.
She knew he was lying but also that he wouldn't give in so easily, so she dropped it there and turned back to watch the moon hover over the ocean. The night had got colder now, (Y/N) slightly shivering as the breeze tingled her body.
"Are you cold?" Nagito asked her, even though it was pretty obvious.
"Yeah, a bit, but it's not too bad." She replied, huddling her knees.
He didn't hesitate to remove his jacket and drape it over her body, watching as it surrounded her small frame.
"Oh! Thank you, Nagito, you didn't have to." She blushed under his jacket.
"It's alright, I'm quite warm anyway." Nagito reassured.
Besides, you look adorable in my jacket... he thought to himself.
"What?" (Y/N) turned to face him, convinced she was hearing things.
Nagito let out a small exclamation as he realised that he had said that out-loud. He scratched the back of his neck while giving her a nervous smile.
"Heheh, just my luck... I bet you feel disgusted by me right now." Nagito awkwardly laughed.
"Komaeda. Please, don't beat around the bush. Be straight with me." She looked at him with a confused expression.
How could he refuse? He had already dug himself a hole so, he might as well go all out. It's already clear she'll stop talking to him after what he's already said so he might as well confess.
"I have feelings for you, (Y/N), it's true. I have for quite some time now." Nagito admitted, his face tinted a bright pink.
(Y/N) just gaped at him with her lips slightly parted, at a loss for words. Her mind had just stopped working as he confessed to her, unable to comprehend how someone like him could ever display interest in someone like her. He was so gorgeous, amazing in her eyes and she was so... ugly and boring (actually you're beautiful and amazing but for the sake of the story). She couldn't believe her ears right now, convinced she was in some sort of fantasy dream and he was about to tell her to wake up. Or that he would turn around and say sike and admit it was all a joke.
But it never happened. He just kept looking at her with a nervous expression while she sat there looking blankly at him. Her face was unreadable which just made him even more nervous, but he couldn't help but feel a strong urge to just kiss her right here and there. He bit back his lip in an attempt to contain himself, but looking into her soft eyes he subconsciously leaned in and brought a hand to her cheek.
"I'm sorry... scum like me shouldn't even dream of touching you like this but... I can't help myself." He whispered before connecting their lips.
This snapped (Y/N) from her trance, her eyes widening as she came back to reality. Nagito had already finished, only softly kissing her lips for a few seconds, already beginning to move away. (Y/N) acted on impulse, pushing herself forward to reattach their lips and kiss him back. He immediately responded, pressing his lips against hers passionately as they moved in synchrony.
They broke apart with heavy blushes on their faces, both having a look of surprise on their faces.
"I never would've thought you'd have feelings for me, Nagito. Thank you." (Y/N) blushed. "I really like you too. I'd like to be your girlfriend— if that's okay with you of course!"
He chuckled, feeling quite confident as he didn't get rejected.
"As long as you're willing to have trash like me as your boyfriend." He answered.
"Ko, please stop calling yourself trash. You're amazing." She pleaded.
"On one condition." He smirked. "Let me stay in your cottage tonight."
She blushed harder at his suggestion.
"Heheh, I know why you haven't been sleeping. You don't like sleeping alone, do you?" He revealed with a devilish smirk.
Damn, when did he get so confident?!
"Uwah! How did you figure that out?!" (Y/N) bounced back in shock.
"Just a lucky guess." He laughed, getting up to his feet before reaching out a hand to lift her up as well.
They walked in a comfortable silence, Nagito with his hands in his jean pockets and (Y/N) wrapping his large coat around her body. Nagito gushed as he saw the girl latching onto his jacket, finding it rather cute as he looked down on her. They eventually arrived back at her cottage, (Y/N) opening the door as they entered the comfortable abode.
"Here, you can have this back." She took his jacket off her shoulders and handed it to him. "Thank you."
"Well I suppose you won't be needing it now." He said with a suggestive smile on his features.
"Huh?" She gave him a quizzical look.
"Well, I'm not sleeping on the floor am I?" He chuckled.
Oh god, she hadn't even thought about where he would sleep. There was no way he was sleeping on the floor, that was for sure. So his only option was her bed, which meant-
"Hey!" She let out a small squeal as Nagito picked her up, carrying her over to the bed before putting her under the covers and getting in next to her.
"I have waited for this for a long time. I'm not wasting any more time." He whispered in her ear, before pulling her against his chest and spooning her, snuggling his face in her hair as a few strands of his tickled her skin.
"Sleep well, my little hope~"
