short angst for y'all
(Y/N) watched as they said their 'I do's, clapping for her two close friends as they tied the knot. They kissed passionately, sealing the deal and now being officially married.
Such a lovely wedding, the decorations were beyond perfect and the atmosphere was romantic. The seats were full with guests, from previous classmates to family. Everyone looked so happy, some shedding tears with bright smiles on their faces.
(Y/N) also had a smile on her face, holding back tears and making eye contact with her friend at the altar. But they weren't tears of happiness. Tears of gut wrenching heartbreak. There was no hope now, she would never get to be with the one she loved. Yet she held a smile, staying strong to not ruin her friend's special day.
The reception was brilliant, a large hall being booked with top tier food cooked by Teruteru himself and music organised by Ibuki (with the watchful eye of Peko to make sure she wasn't too careless). Mahiru was the wedding photographer, Hiyoko performed a few dances and Mikan helped with the decorations. Everyone was celebrating in the hall, cheering as the new couple cut their cake and wishing them the best of luck.
(Y/N), on the other hand, was outside the arena, sitting on a small bench not far from there. She hated to be so weak but she couldn't deny the horrible feeling of loss that rippled through her body. She laughed humourlessly; what a pathetic 'best woman' she had been for her best friend, Nagito. She wiped away some fallen tears, sighing heavily and looking up at the black night sky. She closed her eyes, just relaxing in the soft breeze of the night until she felt a slight weight on the bench next to her.
"Ah, so this is where you've run off to. Too loud for you?"
(Y/N) opened her eyes and turned to face Nagito, smiling gently and humming slightly.
"Yeah. That." She lied, hiding her true feelings. "Shouldn't you be in there enjoying yourself? Hajime will be looking for you soon."
"Maybe. I just wanted to talk to you for a little bit." He shrugged his shoulders. "We're throwing the bouquet soon. Thinking of rigging it so it lands on you."
(Y/N) laughed, waving her hand as if to brush him off.
"Don't be so silly Nagito. That defeats the purpose of the gimmick." (Y/N) spoke. "Plus, I don't even have a boyfriend. You really think I'm going to be getting married anytime soon?"
"There must be someone, (Y/N). A pretty girl like you, there has to be!" Nagito smiled, trying to boost her confidence. "Come on, you can tell me, there has to be someone on your mind!"
(Y/N) turned her gaze to the floor, biting her lower lip to hold back the tears threatening to spill. Her smile disappeared, fiddling with her hands in her lap as she debated how to respond to him.
"Yeah, there is someone. Well, there was. He doesn't reciprocate my feelings." (Y/N) spoke, staying as vague as possible. "But it's okay, as long as he's happy that's all that matters to me."
"Oh? So there is someone on your mind. Who is this mystery man?" Nagito chuckled. "You should never give up hope, (Y/N). Haven't I told you that enough?"
(Y/N) forced a laugh trying her best to stay composed. Oh god, this felt awful.
"Haha, it's nothing for you to worry about Nagi. Now go on and enjoy yourself, I'll be back soon. Just need five minutes." (Y/N) faked a weak smile, hoping he would just give up and leave.
She should've known better though, Nagito was quite a determined person.
"Hmm, no, I'm not going anywhere until you tell me. Please, (Y/N)! I'm your best friend, I won't tell anyone." Nagito begged, faking a pout.
"Nagi... no." (Y/N) refused, turning her gaze.
"(Y/N)!~ tell me!" He made it so that she was looking at him, giving her puppy dog eyes.
"Nagito, I said no!" She said quite harshly, Nagito wearing a look of shock at her outburst. "Ah... I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be so rude."
"(Nickname)... what's going on?" Nagito looked at her in concern, taking notice of the gloss over her eyes.
"It's nothing important, please don't fret about it. Go enjoy your special day." (Y/N) told him.
"(Y/N)," His brows furrowed "someone's done this to you and I want to help you. We're in this together yeah? Even after all we've been through, you're still my little hope."
(Y/N)'s lips quivered as the tears began falling freely down her face, her breath quaky while Nagito's eyes widened in shock.
"Hey... hey (Nickname), don't cry. It's okay, don't let despair overtake you... you've got to stay hopeful! My hope!" Nagito reassured.
"Stop... stop calling me that." (Y/N) choked out "I can't do this anymore."
"Can't do what? (Y/N), you're not making sense." Nagito said, confusion laced in his tone.
She broke down completely, feeling her walls crumble as she let her weakness take over her actions.
"Don't you get it? It's you, Nagito! I love you, I always have. But you have Hajime now. And don't get me wrong, I'm so happy you've found someone to treat you right and who makes you happy. It just hurts so much to watch you fall in love with someone else and there's nothing I can do about it." (Y/N) blurted out, her words rushed. "And don't tell me to just move on. I can't, I've tried, I've tried so hard but every time I always come back to you. I know I'm just being selfish, I'm so sorry I've done this on your wedding day. God, I'm so sorry. I don't deserve you, I never have."
Nagito stayed silent, staring at her with a shell shocked expression as he processed her words.
"(Y/N)... I had no idea..." Nagito muttered, finding it difficult to answer.
"No, it's okay. It's fine. I'm just glad you're happy now. Do that for me okay? Promise me you'll be happy and love yourself for who you are. Can you do that? Please?" (Y/N) sniffled.
Nagito stayed stunned, a little lost for words. He took one of her hands in his, placing his lips against the back of her hand.
"Okay... I promise, (Y/N)." Nagito swore, looking up at her heartbroken expression.
Yet she still wore a smile on her face, her eyes filled with sadness as her mask cracked. All these emotions she had been hiding for years...
"Nagito! Come on, we have to do our speech now!" Hajime called, Nagito dropping (Y/N)'s hand.
"I'm sorry I couldn't love you back. I'll see you soon." Nagito smiled sympathetically, before walking off to meet with Hajime.
