Continuation of If/Then

Part 6

Meredith and Derek sat on opposite sides of the bar. Derek sat alone with drinks piling up while Meredith sat with Cristina. Cristina was talking to her about her life but Meredith wasn't listening. She was too busy watching the beautiful woman walking up to Derek.

"Hey there." The woman said to Derek.

"Hi there, can I buy you a drink" Derek said drunkenly.

"Sure." 

"You're um pretty"

"Thank you."

"Do youss.... wants.. to have SEX with I" 

The woman slapped him and stormed off.

"HA" Meredith said loudly from across the bar.

"AND WHAT'S YOUR PROBLEM." Derek yelled at her.

"Ok you are cut off." Joe said.

"But I don't wanna"

"Well I am going to get a cab and you are going to get in it and go home."

"Ok" He said as Joe guided Derek out of the bar.

"Make sure she is okay" Derek whispered.

"Meredith?" Joe asked.

"Yea she's very pretty and very small. So don't let anyone hurt her or I uhh. Will cry a lot. That wasn't very manly was it." 

"I won't let anyone hurt her."

"Good cause she is PERFECT and I LOVE her" Derek said as he got into the cab.

"Oh boy." Joe said as he closed the door.

Joe walked back into the bar.

"God that man is such an ass." Meredith sneered.

Joe laughed and poured her another drink.

"So are you still seeing Finn?" Cristina asked.

"Yea we have been on a couple dates. He is very sweet."

"Are you taking her to the hospital thing this Friday?" Cristina asked.

"Oh yea, I probably should." Meredith said while getting up, "I should probably get going."

"Oh so you just waited to watch McDreary drink himself stupid and get kicked out."

"Basically." Meredith said and left.

"Hey Derek!" Richard exclaimed then next day.

"How's it going with Meredith? You two seem good together."

Derek looked at him confused.

"We ended it." Derek said dryly.

"Oh that's too bad. Why'd you end it?"

"Haven't you heard, it was a hindrance to the work environment. Your wife said if we didn't end it, we would both be fired."

"She did WHAT!" Richard yelled.

"She said it was her responsibility." Derek said as he walked away.

The next night was the Hospital fundraiser. All the doctors were told it was mandatory and they had to be there. Derek sat at a corner table in silence. He was hoping to just get through the night. That's when he saw the man that Meredith was leaving with the other night walk in. He stepped into the room and started to turn around, clearly looking for someone. 

The man made eye contact with Derek and started to walk over to him, "Hi... have you seen Meredith." He spoke in a quiet nervous tone. He knew there was some sort of history between the two of them but he was the only person there that he recognized.

"No I haven't" Just as he said that he looked up at the staircase. Meredith was walking down looking like a fairytale. Her hair was long and in loose curls, she was in a loose black, low cut dress that she was holding up so she wouldn't trip. She glided down the staircase.

Finn saw Derek staring and turned to see Meredith, "Oh there she is, thanks man." 

"Sure thing" Derek said even though Finn was already halfway to Meredith.

He saw Finn kiss Meredith and this made his blood boil. A few other people sat down at his table and made light conversation with him. Though he wasn't very good company since he was very distracted. He carefully watched Meredith dance and laugh with her date, until he caught her eye. She was slow dancing and her head was resting on Finn's shoulder. She made eye contact for a few seconds then pulled away from Finn. She said something to him that Derek couldn't hear then she ran away.

Derek quickly followed her.

"Meredith!" Derek yelled after her in the hallway.

"Leave me alone!" Meredith yelled in response. She found an empty room and stepped into it.

"Meredith" Derek said exasperatedly.

"Just leave me alone."

"I just want to make sure you are alright" Derek responded in a gentle voice.

"No, I am not alright. Okay. I am not alright. Cause my fiance, cheated on me. Then you slept with me. You made me fall in love then you dumped me. Because my mother told you to. And now you are looking at me."

"I am not looking at you."

"You are looking at me, and you watch me and Finn is great. I like Finn. He is perfect for me. And I am really trying here to be happy. And I can't breath when you are looking at me like that so just stop."

"Well do you think I want to look at you. I am a surgeon, I have responsibilities. You, you drive me crazy. It makes me sick to my stomach thinking of that man touching you with his hands. I would give anything not to be looking at you."

They both stared at each other, emotionally exhausted.

Then he kissed her.
