Continuation of If/Then

Part 17

"So does your family know about me" 

"Of course. We've been dating for 4 months now." 

"Oh."

"Did you not want me to tell them about you."

"No it's just. Do they know about-"

"Meredith. There are so many other more important things in our relationship, that doesn't even make the list."

Meredith smiled up at him, "Do you- should I meet them?"

"You want to meet my family?"

"No- yes- if it's important to you. I- we are a big thing and I don't want to get in the way of your family."

"It is important to me. But I have four sisters. When you have a big family like that, we become like a team. We stick up for each other and protect each other, but we are also huge assholes to each other. And when one of us brings a significant other into the team, they are very quickly incorporated. It can be a lot."

"So you don't think I will fit into the team."

"Well you are more of a lone wolf. Only child. You might- it might be jarring"

"You think I can't handle it?"

"I am just trying to protect you."

"I don't need your protecting. I want to meet them."

"Now you want to meet them."

"Well you said I couldn't handle it. Now I have to."

"I didn't say you couldn't handle it and why do you now have to."

"It's this thing."

"What thing?" He stared curiously at her.

"When someone tells me that I can't do something then I have to do it."

"Why?"

"Cause I have to."

"I am going to have my hands full with you."

"Yes. You will." She responded stubbornly. 

"Ok I will call one of my sisters and invite her to visit, do you want easy level or hard level?"

Meredith glared at him.

"I will call Nancy." 

two days later, Meredith and Derek sat in a car outside of the airport waiting for Nancy.

"So Nancy is the oldest. She is the classic oldest child, very uptight, control-freak. She was extremely hard working and has done everything perfectly in her life. She calls one of us or my mother every single day to complain about the incompetence of the people around her. If you don't do something right according to societies rules, she will take notice. But she has a great heart and she has an oddly silly sense of humor." 

"So it sounds like a fun weekend." 

Derek smiled at her. "Hard mode."

Just as he said that, he noticed Nancy leaving the doors of the airport with a rolling suitcase behind her. Derek got out of the car to give her a hug. He wrapped her arms around her, then she took two fingers and jabbed at his side. So he flinched in pain and had to step away.

"Don't touch me."

"Ah, I missed you Nanc-"

"I missed you too."

Derek grabbed her suitcase and put it into the trunk of the car. Meredith slowly got out of passengers seat.

"Hi." She said nervously and waved.

"Hi I am Nancy, it's nice to meet you." she said as they shook hands.

Meredith got into the backseat so that Nancy could sit up front.

"So Nancy, how was your flight?" Meredith asked, determined to make a good impression.

"It was long, and the child in front of me kept on singing this insipid song. When I travel with my children, they always keep quiet. It is completely unacceptable to let your children make all that noise while other people are trying to sleep."

Derek laughed at Nancy's lack of mercy.

"I completely agree with you. If they can't travel well behaved they shouldn't travel." Meredith said to try and suck up.

Derek gave her a funny look through the mirror.

After some friendly chit-chat, they arrived back at their house.

They opened the door and  Georgie started to jump on Nancy.

"Oh Dog!" Nancy said as she began to pet Georgie.

"His name is Georgie, we got him about a month or two ago." Derek said.

"Ok Dog. I am going to walk away so you need to stop jumping on me." 

"Your room is up the stairs and the first door on the left." Meredith said.

"I can help you with your luggage." Derek added.

(Hi sorry I got tired so I am ending this here. The sister/sibling dynamic is gonna be a bit different. I personally am the youngest of 5 with 3 sisters and 1 brother with the whole super successful family members that all went into the same/similar field and the whole Shepherd family dynamic they showed in the show really bothered me. But there will be a part 2 to this chapter and every once in a while other shepherd sisters will show up, and I want to bring Addie, Mark, Lexie, and Bailey in more)
