your firm grip on chuuya's shoulders gave away your nervousness. "you good?"

"listen, chuuya-san, i need to ask you something."

chuuya raised a brow. "what's up?"

"can i introduce you to my parents as my boyfriend? i know it's unprofessional but best case scenario they kick me out and we never have to talk about this again."

chuuya furrowed his brows as he looked at your panicked expression. "i'd hate to hear the worst case scenario."

you grimaced. "worst case is they still get me married to some random guy from our village."

and yet, here they were, walking down the aisle hand-in-hand. how did this happen? instead of marrying you off to someone random, your parents pressured you into marrying chuuya, and he didn't want to tell them is was an elaborate scheme to get out of an arranged marriage. it's fine, both you and chuuya thought independently, i can just reject him at the alter.

you stared at chuuya's gaze seriously and he gave you a an assuring nod.

"do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?" the vicar asked.

"i do." you mentally kicked yourself. that wasn't the plan.

"do you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

"i do."

you were both red in the face as you held hands. this was not the plan. it was meant to be a simple ruse to get out of a marriage, how were you marrying your partner?

it started a year ago, you had just hit 21, gotten a promotion to executive as a birthday gift from boss, and a lavish party thrown by your no-longer superior, chuuya. nothing could go wrong, and you felt on top of the world. the party raved until late night, and when you made your way home, you found your mother waiting for you.

"heyy, mama!" you greeted, still somewhat inebriated and jovial from the party. you didn't notice her grave expression until later. "mama, you won't believe it, i just got promoted, which means a massive bonus!" you slurred your words slightly, bumping into the coatrack as you tried to take off your shoes.

"you're drunk." your mother was a serious woman, with deep-set traditional values. needless to say, she was not happy with your current state. "you're twenty one now, you should know better."

you groaned, rolling your eyes. "c'mon, mum, it's my birthday!" you gave her shoulders a squeeze and staggered upstairs.

your mother followed after you. "you're going to be looked at as a bride, you shouldn't be stumbling around drunk! what kind of woman—"

you cut her off with another loud groan, falling face flat on your bed. "what you need is a man. we're looking at marriage cvs in the morning." the last declaration fell to deaf ears as you fell into a deep slumber.

due to the nature of your work, you were out of your house before your mother was awake and home long after she fell asleep. you had forgotten about potential marriage proposals and been happy doing missions with your new partner—chuuya. the two of you worked together well, chuuya's gravity and your stealth, not to mention the rapport the two of you had built over the years.

one day, however, your mother woke you up on one of your rare free days. she pulled the covers off you, and undid the curtains, letting the sunlight hit your face. you whined, rolling over in your bed before glaring up at your mother. "mama, why?" you whined.

"get up, hiroki is coming from takayama. they should be here in a couple hours."

"who?" you asked, sitting up.

"arata's son. he's a few years older than you—a good shinto priest. hed make a good husband for you."

"what?!" you yelled. "i'm not getting married!" your mother gave you a sharp glare and you frowned, but clamped your mouth shut. begrudgingly, you got dressed and helped your mother cook curry for your guests.

hiroki was a tall man, in his mid-twenties. he was sweet, and awkward, but very country. it wasn't someone you'd want to marry and so you hatched a plan. when they left, you went out to meet chuuya. you asked him to act as your boyfriend and he agreed, much to your surprise.

you planned to bring chuuya over for dinner that night and acted like a loving couple. it came naturally to you two, after much practice going undercover. he held your hand at the table and gave you sweet smiles as he spoke to your mother politely. it seemed genuinely enough that even you forgot it was a farce.

before chuuya left, he gave you a sweet peck on the lips before making his way. your mother had been glaring at you the entire time and finally spoke directly to you for the first time that night. "that's your boyfriend?"

"yeah, isnt he amazing?" you gushed.

your mother narrowed her eyes. "you think you can fool me?"

you blinked, surprised she caught on so quickly. "no, i love him!"

"don't lie to me."

"i'm not!"

"really?"

"yes, really!"

"then if that's the case why don't you marry him?"

"maybe i will!" you blurted spitefully.

you mother paused momentarily. "good. we should start planning before word gets out that my daughter is a..." she trailed off, before heading upstairs. the reality of the situation dawned on you a little too late.

and so, one thing led to another and you and chuuya were in his house for the first night as a married couple. gifts littered the large living room along with post-party mess.

you unpacked a gift from your auntie, looking at the beautiful cherry red silk slip with black lace trimming. chuuya walked out of the bathroom, vermilion hair still wet, wearing a matching pyjamas. he wore the pyjama shirt unbuttoned and your eyes trailed down his beautifully built body. you blushed. you had seen him shirtless before, but never under the guise of a husband.

"like what you see?" he teased, sitting beside you on the bed.

"shut up," you pushed his grinning face away with a huff, tucking yourself into his white satin sheets. he laughed boisterously.

"boss gave us a week off for our honeymoon," chuuya stated, reading the message on his phone.

you perked up upon hearing hearing that. "damn, a whole week? we should've gotten married sooner!" he gave you a look and you blushed, realising what you said. "i mean—" you stammered, pulling the sheets up to your face. chuuya laughed again, ducking under the sheets and giving you a quick kiss on the cheek. you froze in surprise as he turned around and fell asleep.

perhaps married life wouldn't be that bad.
