you stared at chuuya, watching intently as he finished his paperwork. his sapphire eyes danced across the pages, scanning them, his brows ever so slightly furrowed in concentration as he frowned, deep in thought. he twirled the pen in his hand absently with skilled fingers and paid no heed to the beautiful setting sun behind him, shining gold rays through his penthouse's window.

upon finally noticing your gaze, he blinked his wonderful eyes. "what?"

"you're gorgeous." his face erupted into a scarlet blush at your sincerity.

"are you going to help me or just sit there?" he turned back to his paper, and you couldn't help but notice the faint freckles across his nose and cheeks that became more prominent in his blush.

"the policy about not bringing work home is there for a reason, you know. you're gonna burn out."

"i won't if you help me out a bit."

with a small sigh, you moved off the sofa and picked up a few forms, deciding to help your boss out, but you couldn't will yourself to look away from him. "you really are beautiful, you know." he gave you a pointed look. with a small shrug, you looked down at your paper, not wanting to be reprimanded by him.

you weren't lying though. you found everything about chuuya to be wonderful, from the air of confidence and authority he wore like a cape to his warm, sincere personality to his elegant appearance. you loved everything about him and you were never shy about telling him that. not only did you think that his flustered face was adorable, you also thought he deserved to know; his diligent work ethic and his responsibilities as an executive seemed to have taken a toll on him. he was smoking more often and the creases between his brows seemed more prominent, as well as the bags under his eyes.

"why do you keep saying that?" chuuya asked after a long stretch of silence.

"because it's true."

"but why do you keep saying it?"

you looked up at him, setting the paper down. "well, you work hard and you're a good person; i just figured you deserve to know."

"is that all?" one thing about chuuya you didn't quite like however was his density. if he was any denser, you imagined he'd collapse in on himself. you were aware that somewhere along the lines you had fallen so hopelessly for your superior and after dropping several hints from your complimenting to your willingness to help him with even the most frivolous of tasks, you elected to give up with pursuing down that route.

"well, what do you think?"

"i think you should answer the question, [name]." you hesitated, glancing at him. he wasn't looking at you and it seemed most of his focus was taken up by the reports in his hands. on one hand you could be honest and tell him about your feelings and suffer the utter humiliation of being rejected, never look him in the eye again and drink all your sorrows away but on the other hand, what if he doesn't reject you?

"you're no fun, are you?" you grumbled jokingly. "when a woman compliments you frequently, oftentimes that's an indicator she is in love with you." the few seconds of silence went by agonisingly slowly.

"i see."

"what does that mean?" you asked, the thumping in your chest getting louder and louder. chuuya shrugged. you couldn't understand why he was acting so coldly so suddenly. was it something you said? perhaps he was bitter you were honest about your feelings because it soured the rapport you two had built? regardless, he wasn't going to respond. "oh." you couldn't help but sound deflated in your response. "i don't think i'll be of much use here, so i'll just see myself out. good luck with work!" you stood up abruptly, beaming at him, but he didn't look up at you. with an almost inaudible sigh, you left.

the following week was awkward to say the least. you were under his command directly, so there was no way of you to avoid him. as much as you tried to keep your feelings at bay and remain professional, you couldn't help the sharp pang in your chest when you saw him or the pathetic thoughts of how unfair it all was.

as you walked home, you couldn't help but notice the pattering of footsteps that had been following you for a while now. "if you're going to jump me just do it already," you grumbled under your breath, preparing your pocket knife. as if on cue, the man hiding in the shadows lurched forward, swiping their weapons at you. before you could even make a move to dodge or retaliate, the man lost his balance and was shoved into the floor, creating a crater from the excessive gravity working against him. you looked up at your superior, who was glaring down at your attacker with disgust. his eyes met yours and you instantly looked away. you wanted to compliment him about how he seemed so ethereal under the cool moonlight, but you held back your tongue. "i can look after myself." you began making your way down the street

"i don't doubt that, but i'm going to walk you home." chuuya followed after you, walking beside you.

"why? i don't need to be chaperoned."

"you don't think we need to talk?"

"what's there to say? a rejection is a rejection."

"you don't want to know why?" you clenched your teeth, holding back another comment. you just wanted chuuya to leave you be but he was trying so hard to talk to you. "can you at least look at me?" his voice dropped into a soft mumble and you hesitantly met his gaze. you couldn't help but think how beautiful he looked under the city lights, how they danced off his ocean blue eyes, how they perfectly captured the high points of his face and gave him an otherworldly glow.

"i'm all ears."

you saw him shift as he thought about how he was going to word himself. "i'm your boss and i've thought about this a lot. as much as i would love to be with you, i can't."

"that makes almost zero sense."

"do you really think it's a good idea being in a relationship with someone who has authority over your professional life? it puts you at a disadvantage and it's a major power imbalance, you know. i can easily exploit that if i ever wanted to."

you furrowed your brows. "but you wont, though?"

"you don't know that."

"if i thought you were the type to do something like that, i would have never fallen in love with you."

chuuya buried his face in his palms. "why are you like this?"

"do you love me?" you asked, watching chuuya raise his head with a confused look.

"isn't it obvious? what, did you think id i over anyone over to my house or let them go through my personal belongings? are you dense?"

"am i dense? you're the one who needed conformation that a person who called you a masterpiece almost everyday was indeed in love with you, you muscle-head!" you nudged him in the side with mock anger.

"well it's not my fault you seem eccentric enough to just randomly compliment people, is it?"

both of you continued to chide each other until you reached your apartment. he turned to leave, only to stop. "were you serious when you said you don't think i'm the type of person to take advantage?" you nodded. "and if i did, would you point it out to me?" you nodded again. "right, okay." he turned around.

"if you leave right now, chuuya, i swear to god," you threatened in a half-joking manner. he looked down at you with a confused frown. "do you want to be with me?" he nodded. "then come in. we'll have some tea. you look tired after jumping to all those conclusions." chuuya rolled his eyes as he followed you into your home.
