Chapter 34
Hearing Day
Trent
Today is the day. We have our hearing today to find out if we get to keep Zoe. There shouldn't be a problem. Emerly has enough evidence against Adrienne, she will never get to Zoe again. Not with what we have. Between the testimony from Zoe and Adrienne's parents on her less than stellar parenting, to leaving Zoe alone at all hours, to neglect, not to mention the first paternity test being falsified and who knows what else she's done. I'm not worried that we won't get her.
Then why am I so nervous?
This is what we have been waiting for. For Maggie and I to become parents. For us to start a life together, to move forward from where we are together. Maggie is as much a part of this as I am but she seems so calm, so easy this morning. She was up and moving before I was, not that that was a surprise. Working late nights at the restaurant I tend to sleep in unless we have a staff meeting. But Maggie was way early today, pancakes and bacon, eggs and fresh orange juice were sitting on the table waiting for us by the time Zoe and I came in.
"This looks awesome, sweetheart. You didn't have to cook." I love it when she does. Maggie said she wasn't much of a cook, but that was a major understatement. The woman cooks, and extremely well. I could get used to her making breakfast every morning and dinner every night. I am getting used to it and I don't want that to change.
"I thought it was a big day that deserved a big breakfast. Zoe eat up now. We've got a big morning at the courthouse." Maggie poured syrup over Zoe's pancakes before she cut them into bite sized pieces for her. "Besides, it was better for me to do something and feel useful. I'm a little nervous about what might happen. Aren't you? You seem so calm."
Smiling, because it eased my mind that it wasn't just me feeling nervous. I took Maggie's hand and kissed it. "I'm very nervous, baby but the odds are in our favor. Plus Adrienne's parents and Jeremy are testifying on our behalf. We've got this."
Giving her hand a squeeze, I try to assure both of us that there's nothing to worry about. We have to get custody. Zoe needs us and I know Adrienne doesn't want her. She's just using her daughter as a meal ticket which only angers me. I won't let that show today though. Adrienne will get what's coming to her and we will get Zoe. I don't doubt that.
But those nerves are still on high alert
We ate and talked about the party later tonight that Harper is throwing for Zoe and Mitch. He's thinking positively about the outcome as is the rest of my staff. All of them have been so supportive, even Jeremy. I know he wants nothing to do with this but he's held up and toughened it out with me. A party is just what the doctor ordered to end this day.
A celebration to bring Zoe into our family and to welcome Mitch home from the hospital. I know the guy has been begging to get out of there for days. He's lucky his nurse is still talking to him. Although I think she's the reason Mitch has stuck it out this long. I think our pal has the hots for nurse Sage.
This time in the hospital has been hard on Mitch and Frankie's relationship. Frankie had to explain why she's moving into the beach house with Lily and Mitch has had to learn Harper has the hots for his sister. They need a break too. Harper and Frankie, it's complicated for them and Harper having lost his balls doesn't help.
Seems like a lot of complicated hots are going around.
We've closed the restaurant for the day and tonight because of the celebration. Between the hearing and helping with Mitch at the hospital, I think the whole staff has run themselves down. A couple days off won't hurt anyone, and it will give everyone a chance to recharge. So with this in mind, I send out a group text to all the staff letting them know the restaurant is closed for the weekend. I'm even going to go ahead and pay the salaries for those that were on schedule. A gift for all of us.
