Chapter 35

Coming home

Trent

Family matters.

Those words have never meant more to me than they do today. I'm lucky and I'm aware of just how lucky I am. I had parents who loved us beyond words, a brother who is a best friend and the heart of me. I have a group of friends that stepped up when I needed them and stood for me. My band of brothers who I couldn't get through life without. Now I have a woman I love unconditionally. I will do everything I can for Maggie just to keep her in my life, my arms and my bed. And I have a child, who reminded me what family is really about. Zoe is the glue for me.

I'm looking forward to this new chapter of my life. One I can see now because of the people who surround me, support me and love me. I didn't think I would have this opportunity a year ago. It's amazing how things have changed by chance of a relationship gone wrong and a meeting with a woman who changed my world. I'm going to do everything to make me a better man for them.

But first, I need to thank the man responsible for this chance, Jeremy.

He didn't wait around to hear the results from the judge. He gave up his rights as a father for me to have the family I longed for. No one has heard from him, no one has talked to him since he left the courthouse. I'm worried that was the last time we'll see him.

When we got out of the courtroom, Adrienne was still fuming about the outcome of the case. She actually thought she had a chance by making Maggie look bad. She didn't think that we were prepared for her bullshit. Emerly is smarter than Adrienne thought, she was ready for what happened.

I couldn't be prouder of Maggie. She held her own against that little prick of her ex but more her mother. I know just how hard it was for Maggie to stand her ground with her and not have another panic attack. She controlled it and won, even afterwards in the hall where her mother waited to attack Maggie again.

"You aren't capable of being an appropriate mother to that child. You aren't responsible enough! You'll only ruin the child! I'll make sure she knows exactly what you are." Her mother promised, grinding her teeth in a controlled rage as we passed.

"Shut the fuck up! Maggie is a great mom for Zoe. You know nothing about Maggie or who she is!" Harper hit back at the woman. He stood up for Maggie and let us pass without issue.

"I want what you owe me, Margaret! That money is mine. Mine! I won't allow you to blow my Elizabeth's gift she left. You stole that from me just like you took your sister from me! You have no idea what you're doing, you aren't responsible enough to handle it. You never did deserve the respect Elizabeth gave you." She called out as we ignored her and walked to the parking lot.

"She's not going to back off, Trent." Maggie softly said as I tightened my hold on her hand. "I know my mother. She'll keep after me until I break. She'll do everything she can to destroy me and hurt you."

"Let her try, sweetheart. She'll be in court again with our attorney for her efforts. She's not touching a dime of what's yours or mine." I assured her and opened the door for her to get into the car. "And she isn't coming near you or Zoe again."

Thinking about this, I want to talk to Mitch about changing my will. I need to make sure Maggie and Zoe will be taken care of should anything happen to me. The important things I haven't thought of or really arranged for. I need to do this now.

We left the courthouse and let Carol and Bill know to bring Zoe to the restaurant. Harper had everything arranged for a welcome home for Mitch and welcome to the family for Zoe. The staff was to decorate and get everything ready. We closed for the weekend to give everyone some much deserved time off. It's needed.
