Chapter 29
The Reality of a Situation

Maggie

We woke Frankie when the doctor came out to talk to us. I hated to wake her up. She's been so stressed out but this is her brother. Mitch is in a bad place.  He took two shots, one to his shoulder and the other to his spleen. The doctor said he is in critical condition.

I've dealt with the news that a sibling is a very grave state. I've felt exactly what Frankie is feeling now. That sense of no control, being scared and told to be strong, not knowing what will happen or what I can do to fix it. Worse what will happen if it's the worst scenario. Out of this room full of men, I'm the most qualified person to help her through this.

"I'll keep you posted on his condition. The nurse will be out shortly to let you know when you see him." He left us standing there shocked that he didn't have better news.

Frankie was silent just staring at the doctor's retreating back. She isn't managing this well. I understood too well. The only blood to her is in critical condition. She feels lost and scared but she isn't alone and shouldn't feel that way. Putting my arm around her, I left Zoe in Trent's capable hands and took Frankie to the corner.

"He is going to pull through this. You won't lose him." Frankie looks at me like I've lost my mind. "Frankie it could have been much worse. He didn't say Mitch had cancer and was going to die. And a person can live a normal life without a spleen. We just need to give his body a chance to recover."

"How did you find out about her? Your sister had cancer, right?" She remembers then looks directly into my eyes.

Her pain, fear, so clear in those deep set eyes. Rubbing my hands up and down her arms not just to warm her but to help her know she isn't alone here. Feeling alone and in pain is the worst. I'm too familiar with that.

"I was at the hospital. She wasn't feeling well and passed out. They told us Beth knew long before we did. She didn't want to upset us or deal with.... the fallout from it, I guess. I don't blame her but I would have liked to know that our time together was so limited." It still hurts but not like it did. I'm not alone anymore, that has helped ease the pain of losing her.

Looking over at Trent, I see he's frowning, deep and heavy lines etch his forehead then I hear Harper laugh and look over. "Frankie are you teasing me, baby." My eyebrows raised as he puckers up like he's kissing someone. "Damn, I like this too."

Feeling a tug on my hand, I look down to see Zoe raising her hands to be picked up. Reaching down to lift her into my arms, I've barely got her up when I see Trent take two long strides across the room.

"HARPER!!!" Trent shouts causing both Frankie and I to jump. Harper jerks awake and disoriented, looks around the room at all of us trying to figure out where he is and what happened. "Come on hot lips, let's go for a walk!"

Harper locked his eyes on Frankie's face and froze. Her eyes went wide, almost panicked locking on him. Her body stiff and trembling like she's scared but it's not fear on her face, more like embarrassment. Her face is flushed with a deep red to her cheeks and her eyes gaze lowers from Harper's eyes down his chest and lower still. I follow her gaze and find my own eyes widen at the large bulge in Harper's pants.

"Harper! Now!" Trent takes hold of him by the scruff of his neck and drags his brother out of the room.

"I hope he takes care of that by hand before he comes back." Cole grumbles under his breath.

"Seriously?" Jeremy pushes his shoulder. "Ew and gross they're brothers! I think that's something that needs a softer touch." His eyes landing on Frankie. "Maybe you should go help the guy out instead."
