Phil POV
I hold the phone to my ear, waiting for Dan to pick up. When it goes to answer phone I sigh, he probably wasn't up yet. I wanted to apologise for my blubbering last night. Dan would've been tired and the last thing he would've wanted to do was talk to me. Still, it wasn't like him not to answer his phone.
I sigh and slide out of bed. We had to pack up all Mum's stuff today. She didn't have much left. Once me and my brother had both moved out she had a big clean out, then last week all the women in the family sorted out Dad's for us. Now all that was left was what Mum wanted to take to London, everything was going to a second hand store.
"Morning honey." Mum greets as I enter the kitchen, heading straight for the cupboards. Pouring cereal and milk into a bowl, I join her at the table.
"So what do you want me to do first? I ask I between bites.
"The kitchen please, I'll do my room which won't take long, then move onto the living room. Uncle Rick and Aunty Sarah will be over at ten to help with furniture, and Grandma will be over to help soon too." Mum explains. I nod, the kitchen wouldn't take too long.
"Oh and don't forget to but bubble wrap in the boxes with the crockery." Mum adds.
"Okay."Within twenty minutes I'm dressed and pack glasses carefully into a cardboard box. I text Dan quickly and leave my phone on the bench. Why did Mum have so many cups?
"Hello?" Grandma calls.
"Hey Grandma." I call back. A moment later she appears in the kitchen doorway.
"Hello Phillip." She smiles, giving me a hug. "Would you like a hand?"
"I'm fine, but you should ask Mum, she's in her bedroom." I hug her back, awkwardly wrapping my arms around her with a glass in each hand.
"Will do." Grandma moves to leave the room. "Where's Dan?"
"Oh he went home yesterday, there was stuff we needed to sort out." I finish filling the box with cups and seal it with packing tape.
"Oh, you boys, always so busy." Grandma tsks, leaving. I sigh and move on to the plates. Glancing at my phone I frown when I see Dan hasn't text back.
He's probably just having a sleep in, I tell myself, it's been a busy few weeks.By time lunch rolls around, I'm about ready to sleep for a million years. Mum, Grandma, Uncle Rick, Aunty Sarah and I sit around the table, eating the feast Aunty Sarah had brought with her. I text Dan under the table, he still hadn't replied.
I couldn't deny it, I was starting to worry slightly. No matter how bad he was with other people, he always replied to me, almost instantly. Suddenly no longer feeling hungry, I excuse myself and head outside to call Dan.
It rings and rings, but end the end it clicks over to answer phone.
"Hey Dan where are you? You haven't replied all day. Give me a call hey?" I leave a message and tuck my phone into my pocket. There was no way Dan was still in bed, maybe he was in the shower?I head back inside, rubbing my hands together. We had packed away everything like kitchen utensils, DVDs, CDs, blankets, and moved onto furniture. Mine and my brother's old rooms were empty, and me and Uncle Rick had been working on Mum's room. Uncle Rick was a truck driver, and had managed to snag a rig so we could move everything in one trip.
"You know I think we could hit the road tonight." Uncle Rick says as I make my way back into the kitchen. "We're nearly done."
"You mean we could go home today?" I ask excitedly from the doorway.
"Yeah, come one, we'll finish up your Mum's room now."
I grin, that would mean I could see Dan tonight!By three thirty we're ready to go. I give Aunty Sarah and Grandma one last hug, before hopping into the giant truck. I'm in the middle, between Mum and Uncle Rick. I hadn't said anything, but I was starting to feel anxious. Dan hadn't replied to anything. I had instagramed him, tweeted him, Tumblr, and he hadn't replied. I knew unless something had happened, Dan would've replied. The quicker we got home the better.
About half an hour into the trip, Mum dozed off to sleep. Uncle Rick tries to engage in conversation with me, but after ten minutes of one word answers, he gets the message I don't want to talk. I texted Dan over and over again, spamming him in hopes of a reply. Maybe he had lost his phone? Maybe he had gone to hang out with someone? Maybe it was flat? My heart was beating too fast in my chest, and my hands were sweating.
"You all right Phil?" Uncle Rick glances at me in concern.
"How far away are we from home?" I demand.
"Only about forty minutes, are you okay?"
"Something's wrong." I say. "I just need to get home."
Uncle Rick frowns slightly, but sighs and keeps driving.Three quarters of an hour later we're pulling up outside the apartment.
"Don't worry about Phil I've got it. You go see Dan." Uncle Rick ushers me out of the truck. I nod in thanks, quickly turning and running inside. I sprint up the stairs as fast as I can, ignoring my bodies protests at the sudden exercise.
"Come on." I growl as I finally make it to the top of the stairs. I grab at the door handle, fumbling to find my key. Sweat pour down my back and I struggle to breathe. Something was wrong. My hands shake as I try to fit the key in the lock, causing me to swear in frustration. Finally I manage to unlock the door, bursting in and running up the stairs.
"Dan!" I call anxiously. "Dan where are you?!"I tear the house checking each room. Dan wasn't home. I try to breathe, and tell myself he's gonna out. I go to the kitchen to grab a glass of water. As I walk past the fridge something catches my eye. I turn around slowly and grab the paper, instantly recognising Dan's handwriting.
My heart plummets as I read each word, and tears welling up in my eyes.
I was too late.
Dan was gone.
