After weeks of pondering how to break the news to Tom's brothers, you decide on going cliche or overly cheesy — and intentionally so. You'd already given Harrison a mug that reads "Only best friends get promoted to uncle" — a gift he'd nearly broken from his excitement. Tom had caught it before it hit the ground, placing in on the counter while Harrison hugged him tightly.
You'd given Sam an apron that also read "Nieces and nephews are spoiled in this kitchen." Harry's was the most special to date, though. You'd been planning asking him to photograph the two of you, and with the baby on the way, you'd thought it best if he found out from his home behind the viewfinder.
Though he nearly dropped the camera, he'd cheered you on, and even shed a few tears.
You'd made each of them promise — including Tom's parents — to keep the news from Paddy until you found out how to tell him. He'd just won his rugby game, and he was fresh out of the shower. You and Tom had arrived while he was washing up, and as he makes his way down the stairs, he notices you curled up into Tom's side — gift bag sitting beside you.
He sits in the armchair across from the couch, glancing curiously at his older brother and his wife.
"What's all this?"
"A gift for you," Tom smiles, picking up the bag before handing it off to Paddy. Pat notices his family has gathered around with cell phones, and at first he's questioning what's really going on.
"What... is this some present for today's game?" He's talking while sifting through the wrapping paper, reaching inside for the contents of the bag. "I told you guys it wasn't a big deal; it wasn't even the championships, just the f-"
He cuts his own self off, reading the letters of the sweatshirt before holding it up so he can see the entirety of it. He's breathing heavily, and Tom bites his lip in anticipation for his outburst, or at the very least his reaction.
Paddy finally lowers the sweatshirt enough for everyone to see his expression. He's practically crying, smiling so wide it might become permanent.
"I'm... you're... what?"
Tom lets out a breathy chuckle, swiping the edge of his eye for tears. "You're gonna be an uncle."
Pat turns to his fellow brothers, who are gathered in a group with his parents, recording with their phones. His mouth is still agape, the sweatshirt between his fingers, in his grasp. Harry is first to make eye contact with the red-head, and he sends him a smile and a nervous chuckle.
"You're gonna be an uncle."
Paddy weakly nods, and eventually Harry cheers, to which Pat replies with the same level of excitement. He's up and about, hugging everyone; you and Tom get the longest ones out of them all. You can see how much this matters to Tom, knowing his brothers are level with him despite them having a chaotic childhood together. Knowing that Paddy is committed to his life with you is enough to fuel him until his last day.
"And this," Paddy holds the sweatshirt up. "Is the cheesiest thing I've ever seen." You chuckle, Tom's hand rubbing softly on your lower back. "Good. That means you better wear it all the time, then, huh?"
The smile that emerges on your brother-in-law's face is enough confirmation for you, and you mirror it.
"I'm gonna be the best uncle here."
Tom smiles, and it's then that you notice he has more tears forming.
"Aw, Tommy." Your hands hold his cheeks while your thumbs swipe the salty drops away. He chuckles, pouting.
"I can't help it." He sniffles, and you coo at him. "'M just so happy."
