Anna only went back to the house twice since Amelia was confined to the hospital, since the procedures needed her to stay. She was getting better, at least, and that helped lessened their worries.
Angela, on the other hand, would often stay in the house and only visit every morning and night time to take care of their property. She would casually stroll the town and inquire for job vacancies. So far, there had been none in the Knockemstiff public library, the bakery, the mini-mart, even the diner where she think she could waitress. They were starting to run out of money and food. Angela knew that the bills were gonna come soon, and they'd have none to pay if she didn't get to find a job by the end of the month.
“Miss.”
“Sheriff.”
Angela nodded, smiling to Lee as he walked up to their front porch that morning. She was doing her usual watering of her plants, Anna already gone to the hospital after eating breakfast and taking a bath. She was to pack food for Amelia, and Angela planned to visit in the afternoon after having done all the chores.
“You alone? How have ya been?”
Lee still patrolled near the area, sometimes catching up on her when she's about to leave their house to go to the hospital and he'd give her a ride instead of their neighbor, the old lady Johnson. The woman was always kind to them, and Lee was grateful. But they never really got to talk much, so it was nice to see her still in the house and watering her plants.
“Yes, I am. Anna had just left to the hospital,” she took a sharp breath, “And I'm fine, to say the least.”
“I, uh...I came here because I've heard ya was goin' 'round town lookin' for a job...?”
Angela nodded. “That I was. You know...with Amelia in the hospital and the money being used for her surgery, I have to find a way...to buy food, pay the bills, and maintain the house. This is all we've got left from their father's will.”
Lee bobbed his head once and stared up to her, the words he memorized over the span of the previous days already awaiting at the tip of his tongue.
“You know, if you want,” he shrugged, putting his hands on each side of his hips. “you can work for me, I'm willing to help ya.”
Her eyes widened, gripping the hose tighter as she inched closer to Lee. “Work for you? At the station?”
“No,” he shook his head, a smile on his face. “I mean, for me...at my home, up in Brewer Heights. Since 'm always busy back at the station, I need someone to clean the house 'n maybe cook food by the time I'd be home after my shift,”
Lee waited and gauged her reaction, he saw her eyes brightened a bit more, so he continued with his proposition, “I'd give you an allowance, 'bout two-fifty dollars per month, 'n maybe if I got some left after puttin' food in my fridge, I can buy ya some groceries for yours, too.”
Angela blinked, for a lot of times, before her parted lips turmed to a slight pout. “That's...that's a lot...”
“I wanna help ya, Angela,” he breathed out. Though it was her who needed the job, it was Lee who felt desperate to have her in his house. “and ya need it most durin' these times. 'S all I can do for ya.”
